Friday Follies...
Finally, we made it to the end of another week. Must be all this cold weather that makes the week seem to drag on forever.
But that's going to change for a few days.
The Hoosierland weather today will find us with a high of around FORTY DEGREES.
Now THAT will cause some melting...at long last.
(and be sure to bring out the "boomcar boyz")
So, let's top off that warm morning cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa, and see what's been going on.
*** First out of the icicle factory today is this story that follows on the heels of the part of my post yesterday that referred to communication...and how we're losing to ability to do so effectively.
Here's the story link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140307/LOCAL/303079969
And an article by Kevin Leininger of the News-Sentinel:
http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140307/NEWS/140309753/1012/LOCAL
Be better if PRISONERS were doing this.
Okay, so here we have some City Council members who have "volunteered" to attempt to fix the problem with people (and some businesses) that have not cleared the snow from their sidewalks.
Now, at THIS point in time, it pretty much is a case of trying to fix the gate after the horses have all gotten away, but that's what we come to expect from downtown these days.
Get off the damn phone and get your asses on the sidewalks
The 5 members debated the issue yesterday regarding the city snow removal ordinance that has NEVER BEEN ENFORCED in the FORTY YEARS it's been on the books. Well, it MUST have been out there (originally) for a good REASON, don'cha think?
Just frigging RETIRE already!
Council president (and FWPD captain) Marty Bender is open to suggestions on HOW to address this.
They agreed there's not much they CAN do to clear the streets (how about clearing off the sidewalks on the BRIDGES in the city that YOU people own and maintain?), but there is something that can be done better when it comes to sidewalks of residences and businesses...they just figure out what the HELL that is, can they? They don't want to levy FINES (that is part of the ordinance, so we're seem to be looking at a REFUSAL to ENFORCE a law...
((...ahem...))
Well now, this sure wouldn't be the FIRST time that's happened.
We can always cite the NOISE ordinance, the LITTERING ordinance, the JAYWALKING ordinance among a few, but you get my drift.
And while the FWPD will tell you they DO cite a couple HUNDRED of drivers for loud car stereos, they never mention the THOUSANDS that roll by OUR "Fortress" yearly, and how they NEVER get caught.
Welcome to City Hall!
There is certainly a duplicity at work at City Hall, and I'm getting damn tired of hearing the same old from everyone there.
My Father once said (when I was growing up) that "Can't means won't", and he was right most all the time.
I would defer to HIS wisdom in this matter. City Hall WON'T enforce the snow removal ordinance.
Bender goes on to say they haven't the manpower OR the money...well, that's certainly a load of bullsh*t and we ALL know that.
The manpower you DO have, and the money...well, if you all weren't busy blowing the wad DOWNTOWN for nonsense sh*t, you'd have a lot MORE of that money to work with, but you council people can't seem to see beyond your OWN backyards (in those nice neighborhoods), can you?
Bender also say they haven't the TIME to enforce the law...((...yawn...)).
Well, you WOULD if you knew how to PRIORITIZE things better, but I suppose that the safety of citizens and schoolkids doesn't amount to that much in YOUR opinion, whatever you might choose to tell us to the contrary.
Funny, the city DOES enforce the WEED ordinance, but high weeds doesn't place ANYONE in harm's way along our roads and streets, does it?
(again, common sense and logic wins out)
"Smiling" Tom Smith adds they don't want a "snow police"...well, you already have the SEATBELT police, and the WEED police.
And not ONE WORD from our "director of public SAFETY", Mr Russell York...thought this might come under HIS jurisdiction?
(what the hell ARE they paying him for again? I keep forgetting.)
You want people like HER to have to walk in the street?
This crapfest will get tabled until next winter, with little if any real concern...because the weather will be getting warmer soon enough...and these idiots won't have to hear from the taxpaying masses for about 8 months.
Helluva way to handle things, people, especially when FINING people will work, as well and emptying the JAIL and putting the orange jump suit brigade to some honest work clearing sidewalks...oh, that's just a thought on a lot of peoples' parts.
Feel free to LISTEN to us and act accordingly, and that doesn't mean practicing your IGNORANCE.
Moving on...
*** What was stolen was found...and finally returned.
A Thompson sub-machine gun that was "borrowed" from the Auburn, Indiana PD back in 1933 by the notorious John Dillinger was finally found it way back to the department.
Here's the story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140307/LOCAL/303079976
The value of the weapon is believed to be between $50K and $1MIL...
Currently, it does not fire, but could be restored easy enough.
The weapon wound up in Tucson, AZ where the Dillinger gang was on the run from police.
While members of his gang were taken into custody, Dillinger escaped...but the Thompson remained behind.
In 1966, the Tucson police presented the weapon to J. Edgar Hoover, head of the F.B.I., who displayed the weapon at their headquarters.
It remained there until 2010 when the purchase number from Auburn matched the number of the weapon held by the F.B.I., and after fours year (of paperwork), the weapon was brought back to it's "home".
*** Next up, Allen County prosecutors finally FORMALLY charged two thugs with threats to a witness set to testify against a third thug (see my post from this past Wednesday (5 March 2014) for the back story.
Suffice it to say that these two perps are STILL at-large.
*** The city (Ft. Wayne) plans to use $20 MIL to fix the roads and streets...
Here's the story link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140307/LOCAL/303079965
I found issues with loading the map at the WANE site to see WHERE these repairs would take place.
King Henry says "This will make us the envy of other cities".
REALLY?
Is that the best you can do...play "keeping up with the Joneses"?
Screw what other cities think...THEY don't live here, do they?
Why not concern yourself with the safety of the CITIZENS HERE, and maintain your infrastructure in the manner the taxpaying public expects from their money?
*** Lastly today, again, we see the value of PROPER communication, as in telling people the truth, however painful it might be, rather than dress a bunch of lies up to pose AS the truth.
In Steuben County, they have their OWN communication issues, with their dispatch and new radios that don;t work all that well.
I'd wager the FWPD may have similar issues, but since we're now "in the dark", we can't hear about things like computers that won't work, or  air-card problems, or Spillman issues...we're supposed to think all is well here.
A quote from the movie Cool Hand Luke.
Communication is the most important thing next to breathing and eating in life.
It's how we get THROUGH life, in fact.
And the better you can communicate, the better you can be understood.
President Reagan was an excellent communicator...Obama...just a schoolyard bully in comparison.
MLK was a great communicator...Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson...just two hacks fleecing their own pockets on the backs of others.
Hell, Hitler was even a good communicator...he managed to BS an entire NATION to follow him...into DEFEAT, I might add.
Charisma has something to do with that, unfortunately.
We go for the "nice" person...the "cool" guy or gal, and follow those who tell us exactly what we WANT to hear (which is often far from the truth).
Communication is both easy and difficult, to say the least.
And all of us need to remember that, and hold onto the way such things can be used, rather than misused.
We all be as eloquent as Dr. King, or as forceful as Patton, or even as noteworthy as Franklin...but we can always TRY.
And that's the best first step any of us can take.
DO have yourselves a good weekend.
Be well, make a difference to someone today, and as always...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

((Also - don't forget to set your clocks AHEAD one hour  - by 0200 hrs Sunday morning))

06 March 2014

When All Else Fails...
I know the title is a bit ambiguous, but I swear I'm not becoming a politician...lol.
We'll be discussing that shortly, but first, let's look at the Hoosierland weather.
It's going to be more seasonal, and that manes a high around 32 degrees...!
(a cause for celebration?)
Got some morning clouds giving way to sunshine later on and a mild breeze that's adding to that wind-chill factor.
So maybe we won't have to have THAT hot of a morning beverage (warm is still good) as we take a look into what's been happening.
*** And as usual, we have the answer to yesterday's WHO SAID THAT? quote:
"Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence."
This was spoken by the Father of our nation, George Washington, and here is his WIKI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington
Now, I won't go into any specifics...you read the WIKI and find out how incredible a man he was.
Suffice it to say that from humble beginnings, and through adversity in his personal and military life, he rose to such prominence that he was elected to the newly created office of PRESIDENT of the newly created United States of America (all 13 of them).
I found his story to be one that speaks to all of us.
Moving on...
*** It looks like the SATs are going through some "changes".
Here's the story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140306/NEWS05/303069984
One might call such changes "sweeping"...I call them what they are...PATHETIC.
Essays will become optional.
There will NO penalties for WRONG answers.
Students will have the option of taking the tests on computers.
Okay...now THIS is a "WTF?" moment.
Isn't it BAD enough we're graduating students from colleges that know a sh*tload LESS than I do at MY age with only 1 year of business college?
Nah, let's make it EASIER to get them INTO these institutions, so the leftist professors can mold their minds further and fill them with educational pablum.
We'll wind up with a greater number of graduates who will have lost the ability to be as good as those who graduated several generations before them.
Everyone's a winner, right?
Give them a diploma for just SHOWING THE F$CK UP...why don'cha?
(that'll cut out the "middleman")
Now, I never took the SAT, as I was of the generation that still WANTED to enter "the workplace", and over the years, I think I did okay.
Granted, you rarely make AS MUCH as those with the sheepskin, but them's the breaks.
And, since we've transitioned over from a MANUFACTURING society to an INFORMATION-GATHERING one, many of my era have come to know what being SCREWED is all about.
In a time when we NEED to be at the top of the educational game, WHY in God's name would you attempt to "dumb down" the SAT?
Are we following the primary education example that has been in place for decades?
It would seem so.
They say they're changing the SAT because of the ACT test, which has been more CURRICULUM-based.
Vocabulary words are being changed to "fit the workplace environment", so I guess words like TARDY, LATE,. ABSENT, LAZY, DO-NOTHING will be featured?
Instead of testing a wide range on math concepts, the new SAT will focus on areas like ALGEBRA, which they say is most needed for college and life afterward...
Yeah, there's not a damn day goes by where I DON'T use that "algebra" I had taken (even in high school)...
ROFLMAO!
Cripes, if anything, I use more GEOMETRY than anything else, along with BASIC math.
(something our city's budgetary departments might want to look into)
I think it's a bad idea, and will only serve to place our country farther behind those who have already surpassed us in secondary education.
*** Next up,  when did the simplest of jobs become SO damn difficult?
I'm talking about delivering a f$cking NEWSPAPER.
Yo, DIPSHIT - use the damn SIDEWALK
Now, all of you KNOW I clear off OUR sidewalks and steps, and with regularity whenever we get hit with snowfall, but for SOME strange reason, the newspaper carrier thinks it's MUCH BETTER to use the side of our lawn (and hill) to TRUDGE through the snow to toss the paper at our step.
Personally, I hate cold, wet feet in the early morning hours, but THIS person must love it.
I have called the paper repeatedly over this, and for a brief time, it stops.
Then the short-term memory of this person turns off and they go RIGHT back to doing what they were told NOT to do.
The way people act today is utterly ridiculous.
They do the opposite of what is correct, and I remember a time when if you told someone ONCE...that was sufficient.
The ONLY footprints leading up our steps today belonged to a feline, so unless our carrier is a stray CAT (which I sincerely doubt), the HUMAN is using the side of our property.
Sure LOOKS like CAT paw prints!
Damn shame I can't use the BARBED WIRE I have, as THAT would send a definitive message to use the STEPS - NCE would call me on that one from some local who'd dime on me because we care about  our property (which is NOT communal, I might add).
Makes you wonder what these people are thinking, if they do that at all.
*** And while we're on a roll with the ranting today, WANE has a related story.
Here's the link (with video)
http://wane.com/news/local/city-council-to-discuss-snowy-sidewalks/
Yes, friends, City Council is getting an earful when it comes to sidewalks NOT being cleared of snow.
(naturally, that does NOT apply to our "Fortress")
Even during the worst of the snow, OUR  sidewalk's CLEAR.
And, like I stated here numerous times, there IS a city ORDINANCE stating that sidewalks are to be CLEARED by 0900 hrs.
Councilman Geoff Paddock doesn't quite "get it", though.
He thinks there should be some "leeway" as to how the FINE for not clearing the sidewalks go.
Really, Geoff?
People in MY part of town couldn't give a flying f$ck to clearing their sidewalks off, and NO ONE cites them for not doing it...EVER.
And people are NEVER cited for walking down the damn middle of the street any OTHER time of year when the sidewalks are CLEAR and totally usable.
Get OUT of the damn street, you DUMBASSES!
This guy is SO out-of-touch with what is REALLY going on...perhaps if we wanted to put some HIGH SPEED RAIL  down our frigging streets he'd be interested?
There is a public meeting today at 0900 hrs downtown.
Paddock wants to work on solutions rather than fines...tell 'ya what, Geoff...FINES ARE THE SOLUTION...period.
With HIGH-SPEED RAIL...sidewalks would be cleared of snow.
When you start hitting people where it HURTS, namely in the Hip-National-Bank...THEN they're gonna wise the hell up, but NOT before.
And if you're referring to those too old or infirm to shovel their sidewalks, there are people who either charge or do that for free, so there's NO reason why it's not being done. Hell, I can count the number of people I saw going door-to-door to shovel a sidewalk on ONE STINKING FINGER...!!!
That was all through this winter.
Either people DO give a rip and shovel, or (as is the overwhelming case) they DON'T...it's THAT simple, Mr Simpleton.
*** Last back to the barn  is the fact that people today don't know HOW to communicate, and even if they do, it's rarely in the best way possible.
Have a beef with someone? Shoot 'em.
Someone doesn't follow a city ordinance? Ignore 'em.
Maybe, if people would get their collective heads out of their asses for a change, and put down the f$cking social media bulls*t for a few minutes, they MIGHT figure out HOW to communicate again.
Then again, it all begins at school...and at home.
Kids are not being brought up in the ways to communicate both correctly and effectively.
And unfortunately, that spills over into adulthood...so we wind up with a generation (or more) of people who are unable and unwilling to talk things our, reason things out, and decide for themselves the best way to act, rather than the worst way.
You say what you mean and mean what you say...yes is yes, and no is no.
What type of society will we wind up with when people cannot communicate in the manner that they should?
We're already seeing the effects, and unless and until we change that way of thinking and acting, it will only get worse.
And the earlier we can start to effect such change, the easier it will become to interact as we were created to do so.
Therein lies the lesson for today.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

05 March 2014

Humpday Happenings...
Welcome to the middle of the week, and the beginning of Lent for all the fine Catholics out there.
It's "Ash Humpday"!
For ME, I usually give up LENT for Lent...makes things a LOT less complicated..
But then again, I'm METHODIST...lol.
Our Hooiserland weather today will be pretty close to a carbon copy (anyone still remember those?) of yesterday, with the addition of some light snow this morning (little to no accumulation). A high around 25 might be reached, so once again, little if any melting of what's on the ground.
With that being said, I'm gonna join you in topping off my nicely hot morning beverage while I stare into the abyss that's masquerading as our minuscule part of the universe.
*** First out of the barn today is our WHO SAID THAT? quote:
"Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence."
So, WHO said that? You might find the answer interesting, and that answer will be found at the top of tomorrow's post (unless you cheat...lol)
Moving on...
*** Seems the 122nd ANG will be getting some old aircraft to replace the older A-10s they currently fly.
Here's the story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140305/LOCAL/303059981
Yes, the venerable F-16 Fighting Falcon will be making it's return to the skies over Fort Wayne between the next 3-5 years, as per budgetary decisions made by people (in D.C.) who can't tell the difference between a mission-specific aircraft and an all-purpose fighter.
Many are saying the 122nd is getting "new" aircraft, and that's blatantly FALSE.
Dig these back out, people.
The F-16 has been around since 1978, which hardly makes it new in the proper context.
Keeping the ANG base as a "fighter" wing (and that includes ground-support aircraft) is a good step to be in line to receive the F-35 JSF when it becomes available. But let's not forget that active air national guard units rarely receive "front-line" aircraft out of the box.
If you saw the WANE news last evening, Mark Mellinger showed a timeline that described the planes the 122nd has flown since it's creation, starting with the P-51 Mustangs back in 1946..
F-84 Thunderstreak - circa 1958
They got the F-80 Shooting Star jet AFTER the Korean conflict ended, and then got the F-84 Thunderstreak (also after Korea).
The F-100 Super Sabre was the first aircraft they received that could go supersonic, and that was during the Vietnam war (1971)
F-4 Phantom - mid 1970s
The F-4 Phantom came later after Vietnam, and continued until 1991 when the F-16s came along.
They stayed at the 122nd until 2010 when the base transitioned over to the A-10.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II - aka the Warthog
And now, we are once again going to be the recipients of 18 F-16s, as the A-10 is "retired" (USAF speak for "until we need them again")
Better than nothing,right?
*** We can't let the day pass without highlighting a few of the local lowlifes passing through our judicial system, can we?
Well, here we go, boys and girls...
-- The first story has to do with more of the foursome that were robbing apartments around town last year (and were finally caught).
Here's the link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140305/LOCAL03/303059982
So, the score is TWO got hefty sentences, and two got probationary sentences...purely for fairness-sake, mind you. Can't toss ALL these black perps in the slammer, that would be "racist", right?
Still, two of them off our streets is better than NONE.
Michael Jefferson will be a guest of the prison system for the next 54 years, but given time served, appeals out the ass and good behavior (because they're ALL good boys), he might see less than HALF of that.
Not bad for a 22-year old that doesn't possess the sense he was born with, is it?
And this dumbass tried to say he had "multiple personalities" and tried to take back his guilty plea.
Well, if he DID have multiple personalities, they were ALL stupid...and no "do-overs". Naturally, the defendant's brother had to add some "drama" to the proceeding and he was removed from the courtroom.
Ditto for the baby-mama that brought them into the world, with the judge ordering the bailiffs to escort her OUTSIDE to the street.
Makes you wish we had CAMERAS in the damn courtrooms...doesn't it.
Talk about a situation comedy (of errors)
-- The second story involves a case of try and try again...until you get caught (again).
Here's the link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140305/LOCAL03/303059979
This punk-ass thug,  Brandon Carter has tried to off the same person THREE times (once from a call made from INSIDE jail).
You can review my archive post from 21 August 2013 for some backstory.
Must think he's some kind of bad-ass gangster or something.
And this piece of crap is only 24 years old.
The intended "target". one Jaquan Wade was even shot at as late as this past Monday, around 1600 hrs in the 2100 block of Fox Ave.
According to police reports, another black male, Marcus Timmons (a co-defendant to Carter who is OUT ON BOND...and apparently had access to a firearm) shot at the house three times with a weapon that looked like an H&K MP-5, called a "deuce-deuce" (probably a .22 caliber look-alike).
I would say the FWPD is looking for Timmons to revoke that bond, and arrest his sorry ass..
Wade is supposed to testify AGAINST Carter this week, and it is suggested that Timmons was attempting to scare Wade into not going forward with the testimony.
Judge Fran Gull approved a request by prosecutors to revoke Carter's bail based on his "continued instability and disdain for the court's authority".
And Carter now feels betrayed by his attorney...(oh, boo-frigging-hoo...f$cking pansy-ass baby).
Prosecutors say that a plea agreement by Carter is not likely to happen now (about damn time).
THIS is the kind of human refuse that walks the streets of this city...don'cha all feel a lot SAFER?
I'd say that ridding ourselves of ALL of this kind of walking garbage would do this city a world of good.
***  Next up,  City Council does the budgetary "two-step" with FWFD funding.
(or we don't know where the money went)
Here's the story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140305/LOCAL/303059947
Either this city has SO much money, it's can't keep track of it ALL...OR, it's another case of rampant incompetency in the ability to make a proper yearly budget without "miscalculating" an astounding $800,000 shortfall.
I tend to lean towards the LATTER on this.
And robbing Peter to pay Paul isn't going to solve the error. I know...I took accounting in business college, and got a 3.8 in the class.
Someone screwed up here...or something is wrong with the way accounting is done (by Democrats).
Again, I lean towards the latter.
*** Lastly today, in a changing world, many would think that our problems ALSO change.
I don't think that tracks all that true.
While specific aspects of our lives become adaptive on our part, most all problems are the same ones we've dealt with (as a species) for ages.
Whether it's power..or money...or crime...whatever, the issues are much the same, and whatever solutions we choose to apply to resolve them are ALSO the same...we just have to realize them, that's all.
But, when our attention becomes diverted from dealing with problems, both big or small, priorities tend to get shuffled about, and that can often lead to problems not even getting addressed in a timely manner.
What is needed in times like this is the ability to FOCUS...most always on the immediate, because that's what needs our attention the most.
And we have to motivate ourselves to focus, lest we become complacent and permit others to do such things for us...or as I prefer to say...TO us.
Take some time today to regain your focus, and remain vigilant to whatever problems come your way.
Therein lies the lesson for today.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

04 March 2014

Tuesday Tidbits...
And it's not just ANY Tuesday - it's "FAT" Tuesday, or Mardi Gras Day.
Funny, I didn't know they had an official "day" for Mardi Gras...usually goes on for a week or more.
Here in the Hoosierland, we're still in the grips of winter and all the COLD that comes with it.
We're in single digits now, but we'll be warming (?) up to a high of around 23 degrees, and I'm fairly sure that compared to the cold of outer space, that IS relatively warm.
Got some sun today along with some clouds and no breeze to speak of, so fill up that hot morning beverage and let's get this show on the road.
*** First off of the icepack today is one of "those" stories that tells you much about human nature.
And here's the story link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140304/LOCAL07/303049937/1043/LOCAL07
Whu? De sign say "fine for pissing"
Finally, someone got caught (and rather well) for pissing in public.
Seen THAT happen in our part of the ghettohood too often.
But THIS case netted some contraband.
Jamarcus D. Wilson, 29, was busted Sunday on charges of felony possession of marijuana and misdemeanor resisting and public intox.
(What? Nothing about the public piss?)
It started with TRAA medics spotting men and women in an SUV limo (someone got some bucks) relieving themselves in the Speedway parking lot located at Getz Rd. and W. Jefferson Blvd.
When police rolled up, Wilson was outside the limo and tried to run.
An officer caught him, but Wilson struggled, so the officer gave Wilson a forearm to the shoulder and an open hand to the head, subduing him, according to police reports.
Wilson told the officer "You don't know who you're messing with. You've done it now".
(now to me, THAT sounds like a threat)
Wilson had previously been CONVICTED of dealing cocaine back in 2006.
(and he's back on the streets WHY exactly?)

Well, there 'ya go...ANOTHER example of a good boy - never harm anyone, the life of the party...(bullshit!)
Guess the system will be turning his ass BACK out soon enough...AGAIN.
*** And while we're on the subject...
http://www.indianasnewscenter.com/news/local/No-Jail-Time-For-Man-Who-Admitted-To-Receiving-Stolen-Property-248249711.html
Yeah, he a good boy.
This story is about on of those FOUR men who were robbing apartments Remember Davonte Hamlet a co-conspirator?
He was "featured" in my posts from 23 January 2013 and 12 February 2013
And you can check my archive post from 21 February 2013 for Tiron Beard)
Now THIS dumbass was originally sentenced to THREE years IN PRISON, but for some reason (he must be another "good boy") those years were dismissed in lieu of three years probation.
And we all know how often such felons break probation, right?
It's our (in)justice system at work with YOUR dollars.
Feeling safer NOW?
*** Guns on school grounds...and it may become closer to reality than you think.
Here's the story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20140304/LOCAL06/303049977
I mentioned this state senate bill last week, and now, it inches closer to becoming law, although some people find it disturbing (until something goes sideways at a school, and they WISH they had a gun to handle an active shooter).
Maybe not so much longer
What's the old saying?
"Better to have it and not need it, than NEED it and not HAVE it".
Yeah, that's the one.
The guns would only be allowed (under lock and key) in vehicles in parking lots and not permitted INTO the buildings, and this is contingent upon having a valid CCP (wonder HOW many juniors or seniors have THOSE?).
Makes you wonder whatever happened to the days when shooting teams had rifles at schools?
*** Last back to the freezer today...you have to question most every damn thing these days...and WHY is that?
(see, even I'm doing it...lol)
Well, I see this as the best way WE, the people, can not only become better informed (always a good thing), but also hold accountable those we trust in whatever power we have allowed them to have.
When I went to school, we had teachers who drilled into us the need to be "curious" vis-a-vis ask questions.
Our parents told us likewise...we went to them if we had any questions about anything from what they did when they were our age (then) to the "birds and bees"...and more.
Nowadays, we should be questioning everything, because we've been lied to so often and for so long, that we NEED the truth.
And sometimes, asking questions might not get us an answer, but rather MORE questions.
THAT alone should tell you that you're on the right track.
Those that seek to divert our attention from whatever truth we are seeking need to be called out for their subterfuge.
Our vigilance is required to not be satisfied with whatever the flim-flamers are tossing our way.
Truth is often called unchanging law, and it is also liberating.
And the last time I checked, THIS nation was still a free one. I for one would like to see that continue.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

03 March 2014

Monday Musings...
Welcome to the month of March, and all the "madness" that comes along with it.
Now, I KNOW I changed the calendars around the house, but for some strange reason, it STILL feels like February...or January.
Must have been the additional 4 inches of snow we received over the weekend.
That'll do it every time.
The Hoosierland weather today is pretty much like a lot of Mondays we've seen this year - COLD...(damn cold).
Today's high will wind up in the mid-teen range, so don't expect anything to melt (except our optimism that this would all end soon - that Groundhog called this one right about a month ago).
So, I trust you have your morning cup of something HOT...you're going to need some fortification to stave off the chill.
Now, let's see what's been going on and what might possibly be on my mind...
*** First out of the laundry chute today is the fact that we DID get snowplows down our streets yesterday - same day service - that seems to be a first (for a change).
Now THAT's a lot better.
Must have been those that bitched about the lousy service we got on the LAST go-round of snow in our area.
And I have to add that the plows did seem to do a better job than that last time.
What a DUMBASS...!
There was only ONE car parked along the street in our block when the plow came through (dumbass) and the plow went around his car, which is always parked 50 feet from the house he cribs at...suspicious as all hell, if you ask me.
Still, we got plowed BOTH N/S and E/W...and to me, that's a bit on the remarkable side
Makes getting to a MAIN street a bit easier, considering that none of the schools had delays this morning.
And, if you were wondering if this latest bout of snow made an impression on those who have NOT (to date) shoveled off their walks...it didn't.
They're STILL so damn lazy they stink.
(and will never get called on it either)
*** Next up, with all this extreme winter weather, one would have to conclude that CRIME has been going DOWN.
As long as it keeps snowing...it IS.
Well, the homicide rate has dropped off, because even THESE morons don't like shooting one another when it's this cold or snowy outside.
Expect that to change with the weather, for it's one of the best ways to measure criminal activity.
Now, with THAT said, it doesn't take a rocket scientist (or criminal justice major) to figure out that crime has NOT dropped that much across the board.
Homicides alone do not a crime report make.
We STILL have all those OTHER crimes that are happening every single day...it's just that none of THOSE are as "sensational" or news-worthy as the media sources would prefer.
You still have shots being fired most every day (and within 3 miles of our "Fortress"., and all the assorted vandalism, "disturbances", assaults, robberies and burglaries. And naturally, when some idiots get cabin-fever due to the weather, they choose to beat on one another for the hell of it.
Those are called DOMESTICS, and we have those every day.
You watch, when this weather DOES break, the more attention-getting crimes WILL return.
When perps know that they can't be tracked from a crime scene (thanks to footprints in the snow) they'll return.
When roads are cleared off enough to make driving a lot easier, the convenient store and drugstore robbers will return.
And when having a rolling shootout can be made without spinning one's tires on a patch of ice, the gangstas will return...it's only a matter of time.
If it snows ALL year, I'll look REAL good!
So, I don't want to hear a SINGLE solitary word about how this new FWPD chief or this "new" Director of Public Safety have made SUCH a difference in crime.
If anything, we can thank God...or Mother Nature...or even Old Man Winter for this brief respite in the more notorious crimes in our city.
*** Today is the first day of the extended school days for the FWCS...
And we LOVE jerking our knees, too!
There are much better solutions than sticking on an extra HOUR each day until the 12 days were made up...
A letter to the editor (in the J-G) today suggested a FIFTEEN MINUTE EXTENSION to the school day - a lot less noticeable for the kids and educators, and doesn't conflict with any extra-curricular activities or jobs held by students. Any impact on those would be minimal.
Again, practical solutions instead of knee-jerking...that's what we NEED, but never what we get.
*** If you've been hiding in a cave watching the shadows on the back wall, then you haven't been watching the FX channel, because they've been having a superhero-fest this weekend...and I never mind that at all. Sure beats the snot out of watching "bassabawl" any day.
Thing is, FX isn't doing it "right", and here's why...
The movies such as Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Hulk, Captain America and Thor were made in a particular order and have clues in each movie to allege to a greater "purpose" - that being the creation of the team called the Avengers.
-- In Iron Man, we first meet Nick Fury, director of SHIELD (the "tease" at the end of the movie).
-- In The Incredible Hulk, we see Tony Stark going into a bar and chatting up General Ross about "putting a team together"..
-- In Iron Man 2, Fury speaks about "the situation in the SW region", and the tease, which is never shown, is a crater in the southwest that shows a certain "hammer" at the center of it.
-- In Thor (2011) at the end (which they DO show) we see a "relic" (blue cube aka tesseract) that Fury shows to Dr. Selvig (and we also see Thor's brother Loki, believed dead, but figures into the Avengers movie).
-- In Captain America, the First Avenger (later in 2011) we know where that blue cube originally came from and get a teaser for the Avengers movie.
The gang's all here.
Plus in Thor, we get to see "Hawkeye" for the first time (working for SHIELD), and we know that Agent Romanov (Black Widow) is in Iron Man 2.
The continuity in these movies is very well presented. I just wish FX would include ALL the teasers.
Hell, Green Lantern even has one (Sinestro takes the yellow ring, puts it on, and all comic fan geeks know where that one's going).
It makes watching these movies that much more interesting.
*** Lastly today, the realization of comic heroes is often a mirror to ourselves, and if one were to draw on classic mythology, the same holds true THERE, as well.
Only the names have been changed "to protect the innocent", as it were.
Even movie heroes, such as found in Star Wars bear that out.
I considered my Father a hero, although his "super" power was his ability to put food on the table every day. And Mom's power was to make the house function, and to maintain a family.
While we wonder in awe at the ability of a person to fly without a plane, or have strength beyond the mortal realm, it's all the "little" powers that have a lasting effect, such as one's ability to want to do right or to see a problem through to it's end with a good solution.
In that, I believe we are ALL endowed with powers we often leave untapped, or underutilized.
Making just one good decision each day has powers far reaching into one's future...
We just don't stop to realize it.
But perhaps, while taking in these movies or comics, we see a part of ourselves, and wanting to emulate what these fictional people can accomplish often leads us to keep on trying, rather than giving up.
I know my parents were never ones to give up, and they must have done their job well enough, for I feel the same way.
Let that knowledge be our guide for the day.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.
