Friday Follies - CHRISTMAS Edition...
Or Christmas for that matter...
Welcome to the last Friday of this year, and more importantly, it's CHRISTMAS DAY.
Not that often this occurs, is it?
What say we get that morning cup of comfort and set about this wondrous time of year.
Our Hoosierland weather will find us with some morning clouds and then mostly sunny with a predicted high of around 50 degrees. So, it's not a WHITE Christmas.
We made it through similar years, hmm?
*** Now, let's see what awaits us over the next 72 hours:
December 25 -
---Today is CHRISTMAS
(personal thought farther down)
---It's also NATIONAL PUMPKIN PIE DAY
(Any day works for me on this one)
---And, it's A'PHABET DAY, also known as NO "L" DAY
(oh, I get it...cute)
December 26 -
---Saturday is NATIONAL CANDY CANE DAY
(should be half-priced, too)
---It's also NATIONAL THANK-YOU NOTE DAY
(quite apropos)
---It's NATIONAL WHINER'S DAY
(Well, Obummer is in Hawaii - shouldn't hear him THAT far away)
---And, it's BOXING DAY
(It's a UK thing - look it up.)
December 27 -
---Sunday is NATIONAL FRUITCAKE DAY
(guess that SAME one is being passed around?)
And there you have it...everything you need to know to enjoy the festivities.
*** Now, it's time for the GOOD stuff...
I want to thank every one of you who takes the time to drop by and read this humble blog.
And I think that we ALL come away from the words typed here with a better understanding of what goes on around us, as well as who we are and how we fit into this huge mosaic called life.
At THIS particular time of year, we can glean the knowledge that we are all part of a much better and well-designed plan by our Creator, and be happy as well as content in knowing that.
We can celebrate the birth of OUR SAVIOR in the manner that brings glory to HIM, and we can do it unafraid of the powers that be.
We can put aside the daily rote, and rest easy knowing that something more eternal awaits us all, for believing in Him and taking comfort in the joy that is TRULY God-given.
So...from our house to yours...may you ALL have the most blessed of Christmases, and that the greatest gift you can get is not found under any tree.
It was given to us MANY many years ago.
May you all enjoy the day and always be mindful of the true reason for this season.
God Bless you all.
And if it's determined that we never meet again, we'll meet together on the OTHER side.
A very MERRY CHRISTMAS to you.
Have a fantastic weekend, be well, make a difference to someone today, and as always...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

Thoughts On Thursday - Christmas Eve Edition...
Almost CHRISTMAS, too!
Here we are at long last.
Hopefully, all that was needed to be done HAS been done.
Wonderful weather we're having as well.
I will say it beats having to shovel a foot of snow. I can wait until next year for that.
It would have been nice to have a white Christmas, however.
Our Hoosierland weather for today sees us with moderate temps reaching into the upper 40s.
Expect breezy conditions and the possibility of a rain shower. Although, looking at the sky this morning, we might get a sunrise (or something pretty close to it).
Now, with that over with, let's get that soothing morning beverage nearby us as we see what has been going on elsewhere...
*** First out of the cereal box is the answer to yesterday's WHO SAID THAT? quote:
"Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it's Christmas."
If you're from MY era, you'll know the name.
This was spoken by The Queen of the Cowgirls, DALE EVANS (October 31 1912 - Feb 7 2001) and here is her WIKI:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Evans
It's really worth a read, because I learned things about her I never knew, and I grew up watching here (and her FOURTH husband, Roy Rogers) on television.
She did have what is said to be a tumultuous early life.
But could she sing.
She lobbied for prayer in schools (struck down by the Supreme Court who used the "establishment clause" of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution.
She was also an author and was very outspoken about her Christianity, attending many Billy Graham crusades with Roy, singing spirituals and giving their testimony.
Like I said, it's a good read.
Happy Trails, to her and Roy for instilling good values in those who watched them.
*** Next up, is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
December 24 -
--- Today is CHRISTMAS EVE
(get those stockings hung...WITH CARE!
---It's also NATIONAL EGGNOG DAY
(I prefer mine a bit more on the "high-octane" side, if you know what I mean)
*** Next up, Wifey came home yesterday, JUST beating the storms we had (thank God), and it's comforting to have her back safe under this roof again.
And, as could be expected, I had to perform some electrical "contracting" around the "Fortress".
Seems we have a problem with that garage security floodlights. One side loves to blow one of the two bulbs out (sadly, they're not a dime a dozen), and I have no guess as to WHY.
It doesn't appear shorted out. Might have to get a new fixture after the holidays (oh, joy).
For the interim, I'm using the BLUE floodlight bulbs we had from years past.
And the family room swag light pull-chain decided to jam (when the lights were OFF).
Had to take THAT apart, use some WD-40 and fix that bugger. The chain works fine now.
The "fun" never seems to end, does it?
---Today, we kinda HAVE to go out, much as I disdain doing that, because Wifey left her wall-plug phone charger in Vincennes (she does her car charger).
Now, both our phones are made by L-G, but she's got the SMART phone, and I have a flip phone (a DUMB one). So, I tried MY charger on HER phone...
It WORKED perfectly.
Chalk one up for common sense applications, right?
Still, that means a trip to the Verizon store (Waynedale) to get HER another wall charger.
I told her it ALWAYS make sense to have a SPARE (or two)...just in case. We lucked out on that one.
While we're over there, I'm gonna stop by Do-It-Best and look for a couple more floodlight bulbs, again...JUST IN CASE.
And then a bit later, we stop by the Allen County SPCA to drop oiff the dog and cat food we donate every year.
(plus, I get to see the "kids" frolicking about...always makes me smile.)
((Okay - update time: Wifey FOUND her charger, tangled about her hair dryer cord. one less thing to do today...a Christmas "miracle"? We'll take whatever we can get...lol))
*** Next, because today is trash and recycle day, we get to NOT have to wait an additional day for the pickup.
Dumbassery-at-work.
Talk about lucking out, hmm?
Just hope the damn wind doesn't play havoc with the bins out around the area. People LOVE to overfill them, which causes blowing trash along our streets and then the crows come by noisy as anything.
One thing that always seems to be in short supply on THIS side of town is some COMMON SENSE.
Now THAT would be a great Christmas gift for a LOT of people down here, that's for sure.
(wonder how you get that wrapped?)
---And the Doctor Who Takeover continues...another full day of episodes to watch while you're wrapping those gifts.
I really like the fact that THIS show does an annual CHRISTMAS-themed show.
Tomorrow night at 9 PM is THIS year's broadcast.
Tonight we've the 1951 Christmas Carol (Alistair Sim) on FXM, Prep and Landing on ABC (both half-hour shows back-to-back) and Wifey and I will watch (on DVD) Garfield's Christmas.
Tomorrow is the movie White Christmas.
Gonna be fun squeezing all that in AND making dinner tomorrow.
*** Last back to the (non-functioning) fireplace...we're standing on the doorstep of CHRISTMAS, an we should always be mindful of what the meaning truly is.
Sure, it's great to hit stores the day AFTER for sale items, (and to me, that beats shopping FOR Christmas gifts...lol), but this holiday is so much more than mere trinkets.
So when we gather around our respective tables tomorrow for dinner, we should take a moment to be a bit reflective along those lines.
We may have more EMPTY chairs than filled ones, but it's not a time to dwell on that. Better to think upon the times when ALL the chairs well filled...the laughter, the love, and the charity we showed to one another.
And then, those chairs won't seem as empty, will they?
Because if you listen closely, and think really hard, you can almost see the way it was.
It's to such things that we need to take comfort in...the familiar, and yes, even the routine.
We called such things TRADITION, and that is something to hold onto all the days of our lives.
And the best tradition is knowing that our Savior as born to come into the world and rid mankind of it's sins.
Never think of that as "a away out", bur instead...believe it to be A WAY UP.
Tomorrow, a brief post with a weekend roundup, and some Christmas cheer and wishes.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

23 December 2015

Humpday Happenings...
Twas the day BEFORE the day before Christmas, and the shopping is brisk.
Welcome to the middle of this holiday week, which feels a lot like a SPRING day, rather than a WINTER one.
(complete with some London fog outside)
Our Hoosierland weather finds us enjoying (?) a nicely MILD day which might see us breaking the former record high temperature for the day.
That was back in 1933, when we had ALL that "global-warming".
(Oh wait, we DIDN'T have any of that crap back then, did we?)
We're expecting temps to reach the mid-SIXTIES, and that beats the old record by several degrees.
We have some strong rain showers moving in later this afternoon, and mind that early fog when venturing outside this A.M.
Now, with that dispensed with, let's get our morning beverage close-at-hand as we see what else in going on today.
*** First out of the fog bank is our WHO SAID THAT? quote of the week:
"Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it's Christmas."
Now THAT is something we can carry with us ALL year long...and doesn't weigh us down during our journey.
So, WHO said that, hmm?
(it just might surprise you)
The answer at the top of tomorrow's post.
Meanwhile, back at the Flying L Ranch...
*** Next up, is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
December 23 -
---Today is NATIONAL PFEFFERNUSSE DAY
(not to fret - it's just a type of cookie, folks)
---It's also NATIONAL ROOTS DAY
(and that doesn't mean to check the color OF those "roots"...or maybe you SHOULD...lol)
---And, it's "Festivus", a made-up holiday "parody" from Seinfeld that has gotten notoriety from those NOT of a religious nature.
Yep, looks about right for the nihilists.
Here's the WIKI:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festivus
So, the atheists have a holiday AFTER all, hmm? Good. Maybe they can leave OUR CHRISTMAS ALONE? (hey, we can hope. It IS Christmas, after all)
*** Next, and while we're closing in on Christmas and what it REALLY means, here is a wonderful story of two sisters that caught my attention on last evening's local news...kinda puts a lump in one's throat.
http://wane.com/2015/12/22/sisters-bring-christmas-spirit-to-lutheran-childrens-hospital/
Two of Santa's helpers got an early start to Christmas cheer at Lutheran Hospital.
Samantha and Josalyn Kolberg were busy giving out toys to children not able to be home for the holiday.
They got the money to purchase all the toys through donations and selling homemade crafts.
This is the third year they've done this, but a first for Lutheran.
The maturity of these young ladies surpasses that of many adults several times their age.
And the unselfish manner in which they give is something we can ALL take a few notes on.
I've been at hospitals as a patient as a child, and it was VERY lonely around Christmas.
I've also been to a hospital to do some art work for a children's ward (school project with others), and I can tell you that ANYTHING you do for these kids that let's them know they're not alone (hospitals seem scary when you're young), and that someone is there to talk to means SO much.
I still get misty-eyed when I think of those times.
These two girls are to be commended for their charity, and their parents are to be applauded for the manner in which they brought Samantha and Josalyn up...with a sense of ethics, morality, and a giving heart.
THAT is what much of Christmas is all about.
Moving on...
*** Next, The Lovely Mrs. Bobby G. returns today from her visit to Vincennes, and it will be good to have the house a bit more on the "crowded" side...lol.
I mean, you can only talk to the cat SO much before he walks off and falls asleep (again).
Plus, the variety of TOPICS you can discuss with a family pet tends to be a tad on the LIMITED side (except when it's time for them to eat...then, they won't shut up...HA!)
---In the meanwhile, I AM enjoying the Doctor Who marathon-takeover on the BBC America channel (thank God for small favors).
FIVE FULL DAYS - GERONIMO!
Actually, I put it on BOTH TVs downstairs, so no matter WHERE I roam in the house, I'm never that far away where I miss much. I know that's not Wifey's cup of tea, but the cat and I are still in "bachelor-mode" until she arrives back home to the "Fortress" safe and sound, so why not "indulge", hmm?
*** Next, I want to say a prayer for Pat Miller (WOWO) during his knee-replacement surgery, and that he has a speedy recovery and returns to the airwaves in good dispatch soon.
Not fun to be "laid up" during the holidays, but since I've always looked at Christmas as a time of renewal, it's only right to offer those up who are in need of prayers.
---Also, Kevin Leininger (News-Sentinel) will be retiring early next year after 37 years of journalism.
I'm going to miss his columns, as he was one of a (very) few people in this city who spoke the truth, didn't mince words, and was not a follower of the PC-BS brigade.
Not bad at all for a Lutheran...lol. He's good people.
I hear he is going to Concordia, (not sure if it's the high school or seminary) so he's not leaving us entirely, thank God for that.
He had his detractors, but you have to realize that WHENEVER someone has the courage to speak the truth, there will ALWAYS be those opposing it (we call them LIBTARDS).
I wish Kevin continued success in whatever endeavor awaits him (and his family)
Thanks for the opportunity to meet you (several times) and to call you a friend.
*** Last back to the rain barrel...like I said earlier this week, Christmas is a time that brings out the BEST in people.
...And kittens, too.
Unfortunately, it will also bring out the worst in people, or is it that we tend to NOTICE the bad more easily during a time which is filled with all that "good will"?
I believe that any person of a good and sincere heart sees the problems of the world much easier, and can also know the hearts of many people they encounter with the same ease.
First impressions are usually the ones we recall with clarity, and my Dad always chided me to make the best first impression I could, because it not only reflected upon ME, but my FAMILY as well.
Many people today can't seem to get a handle on that one.
They act out and take no never-mind as to how others will view them, and what ramifications follow along for the ride.
The old saying "What you see is what you get" never has had as much importance as it does today, because so many are lost in their own devices, passions, nonsense...call it what you will.
None of us are anywhere close to approaching perfection (that's reserved for the Almighty), but we can sure as anything TRY...no harm in wanting to attempt to be BETTER, is there?
But, for some, the EFFORT needed to follow such guidelines is too difficult...better to take the easy way through life. That's not the best way, and has it's own problems connected with it.
At THIS time of year, let's be a lot more REAL in the way we deal one with another.
None of this PC-BS stuff.
Let's allow our yays to be yay and our nays to be nay...at least THAT part is easy enough.
And, let's be unafraid to speak the truth, live the truth, and spread the truth.
I think that is a great way to proceed into the Christmas time of year...and beyond.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

22 December 2015

Tuesday Tidbits...
How about that...still damp outside, and mild...feels just like a couple holiday seasons when I was a child.
MY concern back then was thinking how Santa would manage that sleigh of his WITHOUT snow. No wheels, you see.
Somehow, he did all right...long before the PC-global-warming nitwits surfaced from under whatever rock they were trying to crawl from.
Welcome to the winter solstice of 2015 - shortest day of the year, which means it's also the LONGEST NIGHT of the year. (yeah, this day changes from year to year)
Our Hoosierland weather will see us with temps climbing near to the 50-degree mark, mostly cloudy skies, light breezes, and plenty of last-minute shoppers out there, so be warned.
And, since I already have a nice big cup of coffee (laced with hazelnut creamer, Hershey's syrup and some Canadian mist - it IS good, trust me) parked alongside, it's only fair that you get your morning drink as well so we can all see what's been going on elsewhere...
*** First out of the fridge is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
December 22 -
---Today is indeed the WINTER SOLSTICE
(otherwise known as the FIRST DAY OF WINTER, so say "hi" to a wiccan, or a druid)
---It's also NATIONAL FLASHLIGHT DAY
(you can never have enough...or batteries, right?)
---And, it's NATIONAL HOMELESS PERSONS' REMEMBRANCE DAY
(too many reasons why people become homeless, many through no fault of their own)
---It's NATIONAL DATE NUT BREAD DAY
(I prefer this to a fruitcake for the holidays)
---And, it's also the day known as YULE.
(Not to be confused with "YOU'LL" be spending some serious money for Christmas...got it?)
---It's FOREFATHERS DAY
(a day to remember the pilgrim landing. Christians escaping persecution)
And, it's ANNE AND SAMANTHA DAY
In case you're wondering, here's the WIKI:
http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/ann-samantha-day-december-22/
And there you go...all you need to know today.
*** Next up is our weekly salute to this city's "Hall of Shame" when it comes to the irresponsible use of firearms in Fort Wayne.
Time for all the police radio calls the media never lets YOU know about:

FIREWORKS CALLS - 12/14 -12/20
((none)) for a change. Merry-effin Christmas.
============================
Looks like all the idiots are warming up for New Year's Eve...when much of the south side of Fort Wayne sounds like the south side of Chicago...or Fallujah...or a Civil War re-enactment. You get the idea.
*** Next up, another day of Bachelor-living...and I didn't go postal on the neighbors.
(to quote Han Solo: "Sometimes, I amaze even myself.")
Hey, it's a gift
That's not to say I didn't have a reason.
See, some moron up north decided to marry his vehicle to some utility poles, and that damaged a transformer (no, it wasn't Optimus Prime or Bumblebee).
That domino effect managed to take several radio stations OFF THE AIR for an hour or so.
Weird thing about it - the ONLY TWO stations I listen to and have on in the house were WOWO (talk radio) and WBNI (classical).
I tried to find a rock station, but "The Bear" was also off the air, as was K-105 and WMEE.
Luckily, I went to the WOWO site and got a live feed of what was on, but the rest of the house (and not those hills) "...was alive...with the sound of STATIC....!"
"KHAAAAAAAANNN!!!!"
Wonder who plans this kinda crap?
You know, when the Lovely Mrs. Bobby G. is not here, this house seems a bit larger.
((BTW, the Doctor Who "takeover" starts TODAY rather than tomorrow on BBC Amerca. Time does get complicated, eh?))
*** Next up, our Blamer-in-Chief is still at it...the latest "claim" is that Donald Trump and the MEDIA are responsible for the ISIS/ISIL bullshit going on...
We caught you...as usual.
Here's the story link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/us/Obama--Trump-playing-on-fears-10580829
If Trump is playing on the fears of Americans, he is not incorrect there.
After all, it was our "fundamentally-transforming America" president that has CAUSED the fears in the first place. Something ELSE he won't take the blame for. Push it onto anyone else...that's the ticket.
Here's the story of the media being blamed:
http://www.wnd.com/2015/12/obama-blames-media-for-americas-isis-fears/
I love people that bullshit us all, lie to our faces, and never EVER take responsibility for the fallout or their own shortcomings...surely the sign of a real loser in life.
I thought the media (for the most part) was in Obummer's hip pocket?
Guess not.
*** Next up, Frank Gray takes a look at intersections in Fort Wayne that prove hard to navigate (when people are under some influence. Here's the story link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/local/frank-gray/Crash-shows-guardrail-no-help-at-tricky-intersection-10580043
Excessive speed? Welcome to "DUH"!
This is the house I mentioned yesterday, and how a man is made a tad more homeless than he thought he'd be for the Christmas season.
Helluva draft he's got there.
Not exactly habitable for a house that's been in the family since the 70s. As someone who also lives at a corner, I worry about the same thing - excessive SPEED and drivers either drunk as hell or stoned off their asses.
Hell, we also have a utility pole at the corner and THAT could come crashing down on the "Fortress" if hit the right way.
The only "saving grace" is that our house is on a slight hill, so a vehicle would have to climb the hill to get to the structure, but I would not put that past SOME of these idiots that the FWPD can never seem to catch (oh, wait, you have to be PATROLLING the area to catch them...right. Forgot about that).
*** Next up, and speaking of the "homeless" AND some BAD driving, a black woman purposely drove onto a sidewalk along the Vegas strip, and ran over a lot of people, killing one, and putting over 30 more in hospital, some of whom are still in critical condition.
Here's the story link:
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/12/21/at-least-11-hurt-after-car-plows-into-crowd-on-las-vegas-strip.html
 ON PURPOSE?
Lakeisha N. Holloway, 24, who was said to be from OREGON is the driver of the old 90s Oldsmobile who didn't even seem distressed for what she had done, according to police who arrested her
(nice job, LEOs).
It was said that she might have been trying to get to her "boyfriend" (who is the father of a 3 year old she had in her car) living in Dallas.
Got news for this loser, you DON'T get to Dallas from Oregon by running into a crowd of people in Vegas.
The no-nonsense attorney in Las Vegas said that seeking the death penalty is "a consideration", as charges of murder and attempted murder are staring this woman in the face.
Way to screw the holidays for so many, shit-for-brains.
Tis the season.,..to be stoopid, hmm?
*** Last back to the kitchen sink...Christmas SHOULD be a time of cheer, and of good will toward our fellow man, right?
But, sometimes, people get "distracted", and lose their way on that trek.
That's when we see that this time of year displays BOTH sids of mankind and the society we have allowed to be created.
We see the BEST of humanity through charitable and unselfish giving, and we also see the WORST side of humanity; the predators who only TAKE from others by any means, or choose to ignore the laws we have created JUST for them in the first place.
You know, it's MUCH easier to be a good person, especially during the Christmas season, and there is simply NO excuse (or reason) to NOT be that way, unless you feel you're entitled to think yourself above any and all laws.
And, it's these few morons that will attempt to ruin the season for many.
Curiously enough, a time of year when we SHOULD all be focused on WHY we celebrate what we do, we find instead, a study of contrasts within our society, and this is without the external influences we have to endure.
It would benefit us ALL greatly, if we made just a few better choices in life.
And, more importantly, it would allow us to fully understand the ethical and moral implications of the season.
To not take such things to heart does more harm than we can imagine.
After all, isn't THIS time of year one in which any form of harm SHOULD be put aside?
Just something to think about...
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.
