10 March 2015

Tuesday Tidbits...
Welcome to another somewhat quasi-fair day here in the "Summit City".
(if you like the color gray)
Although I've heard there's some fog out there, I'm sure it's only in the outlying and rural parts of the area.
But I will confess that downtown at City Hall, they appear to operate in a FOG most of the time.
Our Hooiserland weather today will find us with mostly cloudy skies with temps reaching back into the FORTIES.
Might have a chance of light showers in the afternoon, too.
Looks to be we've chased winter away for about seven months.
So, got get yourself a nice hot cup of whatever you want to chase the morning chill away and we'll take a look at what else has been rattling around in my mind...and elsewhere.
*** First out of the starting gate is our "What the hell happens today, Bob? feature:
March 10 -
---Today is MIDDLE NAME PRIDE DAY...((ahem))
Uh oh...we're in deep doo-doo now.
Okay, then. What about those who have TWO middle names (I know many Catholics that have that)?
Do they take pride in BOTH?
Or the FIRST of the two?
Inquiring minds want to know.
---It's also the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AWESOMENESS.
And, as the saying goes: "Nobody's perfect, but everyone can be awesome"
Happy 75th Birthday, BTW.
Take time to notice YOUR own personal awesomeness...you might like it.
*** Next up, we bring you the infamous SHOTS FIRED (and armed robbery) calls in Fort Wayne that NO ONE takes notice of (except yours truly):

==========================================
Naturally, the MAJORITY of calls occur on the good old, ghetto-loving SOUTHEAST SIDE.
Sure makes me wonder why the FWPD isn't getting a handle on this? Any ideas, there, chief "Garry"???
(didn''t think so - you were too busy walking in the Selma commemoration here)
Moving on...
*** This goes to show that you can't seem to come home from CHURCH without some asshole pulling a potentially dangerous "prank".
Here's the WANE story link out of Greenwood, Indiana:
http://wane.com/2015/03/09/greenwood-family-returns-from-church-to-find-works-bomb/
Serious things that go "BOOM"!
A "works bomb" is what they're calling it.
We used to call them bottle bombs - homemade devices which are chemical in nature and can produce hydrochloric acid that can burn skin, eyes...you get the idea.
Easy enough to make with household products, but nasty to find on the lawn.
I found one on OUR lawn over ten years ago (the day after what we heard to be an explosion outside).
When I found the 2 liter bottle and some residue inside it, I put on some rubber gloves and bagged the device up.
I then asked if the FWPD would be interested in taking the remains to analyze...never got an answer back.
Guess such things aren't THAT important in Ft. Wayne as they are in Greenwood, hmm?
At least the Johnson County Sheriff thinks it's a big deal...good for him.
*** Next up, Parkview Hospital has been doing well of late and here's the proof:
http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20150310/NEWS/150309673/1012/LOCAL
This is a really good article (by Kevin Leininger) and has a video included.
I can speak from "experience" with my visits there, brief as they were.
A very well-orchestrated facility with marvelous staffing.
*** Next, I'm a little late to the party here (blame it on the daylight saving time crap), but this story about Curt Schilling (formerly of the Phillies and Red Sox) and his daughter and social media was too good to pass up.
Back in the day...great times in Philly.
Here's the link from Grantland.com:
http://grantland.com/the-triangle/oldish-dog-newest-tricks-lessons-from-curt-schillings-satisfying-internet-victory/
THIS is why I don't do all the social media garbage...
It's not that I can't see another viewpoint and hold honest debate on a given topic, or even take constructive criticism (however infrequent that occurs...lol), it's just I can't stand the idiots who mouth (read type) off JUST to demonstrate their lack of knowledge and utter stupidity with their rants over something they have no interest in, save for fostering their own unique brand of OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANCE DISORDER.
And I'm glad to see Schilling strike back at the morons out there in the manner he did.
Nice to see Curt still be able to pull a SHUTOUT from his glove.
*** Last back to the garage...I'm all for freedom of speech.
Our FIRST AMENDMENT tells us as much:
((Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.))
Kinda sums it all up, doesn't it?
And quite comprehensively to boot.
Personally, I think there is no reason to BAN words or yes, even speech.
"Mmmphhh"
Everyone has the right to their own opinion, and as we ALL know opinions are like assholes - everyone HAS one, right?
Thing is, and here's where it get's "tricky'"..it's not the WORDS doing the damage as much as the PEOPLE who express their thoughts, opinions, expressions, outrage, whatever.
(like blaming the gun for the murder of someone by another)
When people cannot practice a modicum of SELF-RESTRAINT, that is when we have trouble.
You don't HAVE to say everything that's on your mind all the time...to every soul on the planet...for no good reason.
But people DO...and with a much more cavalier attitude than has been expressed in the past.
Another thing that goes hand-in-glove with this is the MANNER the people express themselves, from a more clinical and educational standpoint.
Rarely do you have someone telling off another person (probably online) with the quality of speech that would make William F. Buckley envious.
It's all gutter-based vitriol, with as many monosyllabic references as possible.
So, in our "rush" to alleviate such social patterns, we start banning WORDS.
Seems a good way to proceed.
And yet, is it more about the CONTENT of a word than the CONTEXT of it that has become the bane of our speech these days?
How often do we hear people go off on some tangent, excoriating others when the CONTEXT of what was originally said gets tossed out with the baby and the bath water?
Yep, that's it.
Some people focus ONLY on the CONTENT, rather than the CONTEXT, or they bend the context to FIT the content.
MLK said that we should judge people on the CONTENT of their character...all well and good.
But when it comes to the WORDS that people speak, it gets complicated, because if we take JUST the content without knowing (or caring about) the context of what's being said, it becomes a real problem.
I used to remember Rush Limbaugh a long time ago saying "Words mean something", and I took that to heart.
The Bible speaks to that just as well in many instances.
And in today's world, we've got more words than ever, and yes, they DO mean something, but HOW they are (mis)interpreted by others is fast becoming the "go-to" medium for our social networking.
I say speak your mind when required, and choose your words well. Others will attempt to twist and turn what you might say against you and your beliefs, but hold fast to what you KNOW to be true...and right.
It's fine to attack the message (if you are knowledgeable about WHAT is being said), but leave attacking the messenger to the idiots who don't have an inkling as to what THEY are talking about. They will get theirs (eventually), for what foes around comes around.
Therein lies the lesson for today.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

09 March 2015

Monday Musings...
Welcome to the start of a much more "spring-like" week in the Midwest (and about damn time, too).
Nice to know we STILL have streets, sidewalks and lawns UNDER that melting snow, isn't it?
Our Hoosierland weather will find us with mostly sunny skies and temps back into the FORTIES...can we stand the strain?
Looks to be a rather nice week (until someone comes along and louses it all up).
Perhaps we have turned the corner on Old Man Winter...I kinda hope so, although with the advent of warmer weather, all the indigenous dregs of society come out in OUR part of town, and raise several types of havoc. Helluva trade-off, isn't it?
In any event, lets get our morning drink next to us as we set off and see what's going on elsewhere.
*** First off the turnip truck is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
March 9 -
---Today is (you are gonna LOVE this one)...PANIC DAY.
((///"push the button, Max"...))
ROFLMAO...like most other days aren't for some strange reason?
We get this a lot from those who visit us down here.
Well, if you HAVE to panic, I guess today is as good a day as any.
At least you'll have a reason to place the blame.
*** Next up, you never know when something GOES around, when exactly it will COME BACK around...well, I do now.
"Gag-a-Maggot" mobile
Take this late 70s era Olds Cutlass Supreme (please)...once a very NICE-looking automobile from a division of GM (when it meant something) now defunct, sad to say.
It has been turned into (what I like to call) a CLOWN CAR!!
I suppose this is going to take the place of the soon-to-be-gone ELEPHANTS at Ringling Brothers?
Can you imagine...AQUA and PURPLE...man, that color combo on a vehicle is enough to give you the running shits.
This car showed up at our newest "neighbors" rental crib...as they come and go so often over the years - blame the crap-for-brains LANDLORDS for much of the deterioration in our part of Fort Wayne (and thanks, Mr "mayor" for all YOUR involvement to aid in such things).
Now, this is the type of vehicle you DON'T forget...and curiously enough, I did not.
I knew I had seen this clown car in our area over the last couple years...
YEP...right again...back in 2012, it was thumping it's way into our hearts (and moving the pictures on our walls).
I new I had a photo of it...although it wasn't good quality (he was on the move).
I can't imagine having to drive that 'thing" around for almost THREE damn years...LOL.
(must be making up for lack of other male attributes)
There is a sticker on the rear window to show "whose fault" it was for this monstrosity - FRESH UP CUSTOMS out on W. Jefferson Blvd.
(look them up and see how weird they can make nice cars)
Now, we've got it back in my ghettohood...
WTG, Fort Wayne.
*** And since we're on the subject of dumbasses, there was loud music playing Saturday night...ALL DAMN NIGHT, in fact.
I need a few of THESE.
I awoke around 0500 hrs (adjusted DST) and still heard it, so I called into FWPD dispatch to lodge a complaint.
I mean, I did fall asleep with the TV and radio on...as well as the furnace and fridge going on and off, so it was noticeable "music"
Well, after going through the menu and waiting for 30 seconds, "Amanda" in dispatch needs to know WHERE it's coming from (I'm inside MY house...can't give you an address, toots). I told her "the block north of ours...dunno which house" (had a feeling it was the one right across the street). I said "have the officer swing through, windows down...he or she will hear it, trust me".
I also mentioned to her that "I figured since it was morning now, we'd either have a cessation OF the music...OR (and I was going out on a limb here) a POLICE PATROL roll through and stop the music...guess we had NEITHER."
NOT that safe, and HARDLY secure
That elicited a few moments of SILENCE on the other end, like she had to contemplate my (TRUTHFUL) statement.
She said they'd send someone by, and it wasn't TEN minutes later, the music stopped, but I fear not because an officer rolled up.
The police NEVER get here for a *44* call (loud music, party or fireworks) in THAT short a span of time (usually 30+ minutes), but if the officer came through and DID shut these asswipes the hell up...kudos, if not, then better luck NEXT time.
Cripes, and it's not EVEN that warm out yet...makes me want to hate summer anew.
*** Now, speaking of the FWPD, I composed an email about those idiots down the street that CHRONICALLY BLOCK THE SIDEWALK when they park in this one driveway (which can hold FIVE cars if someone would pull the f$ck UP to the damn garage).
One of dozens of photos
I know...Eric (who I mentioned last week - lost his wife) was the neighbor who used to LIVE there, and I know more about that property than the damn landlord or ANYONE who might live there. I helped them clean the place out when Eric and Dinah moved..
The name of the "capo" for PARKING CONTROL is one COLIN KEENEY, so, since I didn't have his EXACT email address, I think I've "cobbled" one together based on OTHER department heads and email addresses...like joe(dot)blow(at)cityoffortwayne(dot)org.
I figure it's worth a shot. What the hell, right?
I sent along pictures that go back TWO years of these morons doing this all the time.
Well, after a brief nap with the cat, I get up and see a FWPD cruiser parked on the street.
I didn't hear gunshots, and saw no officer, so maybe, just MAY-BE he's there checking out the parking gig?
Well, he left without doing anything about it...well done, city of Fort Wayne (again).
Less than TWO houses from a parking violation...and did NOTHING.
Or, perhaps the cruiser was just "cooping" (usually take TWO cars to do that), I can't say, but IF an officer is OBSERVANT...AND knows the basic LAWS and ORDINANCES of the city (they do have to study, you know), then he/she COULD take the initiative and either warn or cite the person responsible for forcing people to walk in the street...just a  thought (and a damn good one, too).
*** Next up, we can't let this one get away...no sir.
We have another shooting on the city's SE side
(where else?)
This took place on Friday around  2245 hrs in the 1900 block of Hobson Rd.
Even if I don't know all THIS city too well, I DO know it just HAS to be the Baldwin Creek Apts.
I say this because I really DOUBT if it was the SENIOR facility across the street ("...gramps gotta gun!").
Plus, Baldwin Creek has been in the news before, and NOT for being one of the top ten complexes in the city (unless you mean FOR CRIME)...lol.
Here's the story link, which includes as little information as possible, which is becoming the damn norm around here.
http://www.21alive.com/news/local/Latest-Shooting-Leaves-One-Seriously-Injured-295443511.html
If the city, or the Public Safety Director, or even the FWPD Chief thinks that not providing information that should be available to the media (which could help police solve the damn crime) will make us think that CRIME IS GOING DOWN...well, that's pissing in the wind, people.
Many citizens CAN (and will) help.
The ONLY way you can get the community involved with AIDING the police is to TELL THEM SHIT...like whatever YOU know should be made available to ALL media sources...that is IF you REALLY want our help, and aren't just blowing smoke out your butt.
*** Last back to the ghetto...I miss the days when I had this rapport with our former quadrant captain, Nancy (Becker) Chamberlin...
She was a good person AND a good cop...and I felt like we were making some headway in this area.
Whenever I had a problem, I could send along an email with some pictures, and the matter would get resolved.
She also put me in touch with other city departments, like Solid Waste and Neighborhood Code Enforcement, and they have been most helpful over the years. But try and find email addresses for ANYONE on the city's website these days...damn near impossible.
And, with ALL this social-media "tech", you'd think an email address would be a mainstay.
At least City Council has addresses for THEIR members, and I might consider contacting those I THINK could help (and that does not include Glynn Hines our own district councilhack). I'd contact the AT-LARGE members first.
Hell, I'd call animal control before I called Hines...he's an empty suit.
Like I say though...living down here is not for the timid...or the weak...or the outnumbered.
You get damn tired of everyone else's life INFLICTING ITSELF upon your OWN...
(without your permission, I might add)
And we've been privy to that for over a DECADE...with no sign of let up. Just keeps getting a little worse.
You do what's right...fight the good fight, and try to keep to yourself as best as possible.
You don't get to "know your neighbors", because they probably have rap sheets longer than your grocery list.
You try to effect some sort of change for the better by taking on those who live for chaos.
Thing is, finding an ally is a difficult proposition. Going it alone is a task and a half.
Still, you soldier on.
Guess I take after Captain America in one regard...
Words to live by, that's for sure.
I"m sorry, but we have rules and laws for a reason, and it's not to see how many some folks can break...or ignore.
And these rules and laws HAVE to apply to EVERYONE... EQUALLY,  or (like I always say) they're not worth the time, paper or ink it takes to write them in the first damn place.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

06 March 2015

Friday Follies...
We made it to another weekend, and a rather important one, "time-wise".
And next week, we're supposed to reach into the FIFTIES (and not for oldies)...it's a for-real WARM UP.
(thought that would never get here)
Today's Hoosierland weather starts off with MINUS temps, but will eventually climb into the mid-twenties, with a slight breeze.
That should keep wind chills around for a while.
It looks to be a nice sunrise coming our way, too.
A rather good end to an extremely bland week (unless you're on the committee investigating Hillary Clinton for using NON-government email accounts while Secretary-of-State...but that's a whole other animal).
Go and get yourselves a nice hot cup of Friday fortitude and together we'll see what has been going on elsewhere...
*** First off the iceberg is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
March 6 -
---Today is DENTISTS DAY...(ow!)
You DON'T wanna hear "Drill, baby, drill" HERE!
Well, with all those other sweet treat days past, you just KNEW this was coming, right?
---It's also NATIONAL FROZEN FOOD DAY...
LMAO - Picked a good day for that, hmm?
Damn near everything's frozen today.
---And, it's EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY.
To me, that should be EVERY damn day, and I know I'm not along thinking THAT.
A story farther down speaks to this somewhat.
---It's also NATIONAL SALESPERSON DAY.
Such an "honor"
I celebrate this by telling them to go bother someone else, because I KNOW what I'm looking for, but if I need assistance, I'll find THEM.
That always seems to work out.
*** We can't forget the weekend, either, so here we go...
March 7 -
---Saturday is NATIONAL CROWN ROAST OF PORK DAY.
Now that sets the mouth to watering, doesn't it?
Oh, yeah...pass me some taters.
March 8 -
Sunday is BE NASTY DAY...
It's GOD'S day...how can I be nasty on a Sunday?
That's supposed to be a day of REST (even from nastiness)
Still...(neighbors of mine beware...Bwaahahahaha)
---It's also INTERNATIONAL (WORKING) WOMEN'S DAY
On a Sunday?
Shouldn't they have the day OFF???
There you go...all the fun you can manage...
*** Next up, the FWPD arrests six on meth lab charges.
Welcome to Poplar St. Pass the donuts.
Here's the story link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/local/police-fire/3-arrested-at-meth-lab
I suppose to some people POISON looks better if cooked in a Mountain Dew bottle.
Yep, there's drain cleaner in that mess
Nice to see SOMEONE getting busted...
Lord knows I'm not seeing ANYONE cited down here.
*** Delta flight almost winds up in the water.
Here's the link:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/us/Jet-skids-off-runway--all-aboard-safe-5386932
What? No Shuttle Bus?
Talk about a tense moment...trying to land at NYC's LaGuardia Airport nearly had everyone on board this flight taking an impromptu  "polar bear plunge" into Jamaica Bay.
Thankfully, the airliner managed to stop within FEET of the water.
Only several minor injuries to passengers was reported.
*** And speaking of landing airplanes, actor Harrison Ford was injured (yesterday) when his vintage Ryan PT-22 trainer made an emergency landing in a Venice golf course near the Santa Monica Airport, where he had just taken off from.
Here's the story link:
http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2015/03/05/harrison-ford-reportedly-injured-in-calif-plane-crash/
Just like The Last Crusade...without "Dad".
The plane developed engine trouble, and Ford managed to turn the plane around and try to make the airport.
Have to hand it to "Indiana Jones"...any landing you survive is a good one in my book.
In case you were wondering, Ford is an accomplished pilot and is qualified and licensed to fly numerous types of aircraft.
*** Next, a bit closer to home...still having troubles with FWCS buses and kids and funds and sidewalks. Here's the story link:
http://wane.com/2015/03/05/fwcs-parent-concerned-about-two-mile-walk/
Now, I have to wonder...I thought that these soon to be implemented NO TRANSPORTATION ZONES were to be WITHIN ONE MILE of the schools...and not TWO miles.
All cleared off, and NOBODY uses it.
And I have to wonder WHY large portions of the SE side STILL have no sidewalks for the kids to walk along?
Plus, even WHEN there are sidewalks, the kids PREFER to walk down the MIDDLE of the damn streets anyway...
Who EXACTLY is supposed to ENFORCE that to protect the children, hmm?
Or, do we add THIS to the LONG list of OTHER unenforceable laws and ordinances this city has forgotten about?
Personally, I think the NTZs are a good idea, because streets like the ones near us NEVER were designed for school buses...or two-way traffic, for that matter.
That's why they're called residential, and are some of the OLDER areas of the city...when everyone WALKED to school, and people had (if they were lucky or wealthy) ONE car per household.
Pretty tight fit if you ask me...
Another thing...when it SNOWS (and we know all about that, right?) WHO is going to enforce the ordinance that states the sidewalks are to be CLEARED by 9 AM (too late for school in the morning, unless there's a delay)?
I have YET to see NCE lift a finger to write a ticket for ANYONE not clearing their walkways, and much of the NTZs will include residents AND businesses. The story makes the point of kids having to trudge through ankle-deep snow (knowing what the hell BOOTS are would be a help).
This is the kind of thing that comes across as being only HALF-thought through.
Might even have to add some CROSSING GUARDS at a few busier intersections...or a cop with a way to control the traffic signals.
That would make sense, so you can figure this might not be the way it will pan out.
*** Next up, someone is disturbing the "good old boy network": at City Hall...can't have THAT, can we? Here's the story link:
http://wane.com/2015/03/05/parks-employees-say-new-policies-are-unfair/
A new set of policies that some employees claim are unfair  set the ears to burning, and the questions to asking.
Wherefore art thou?
These policy changes appear to inflict more harm than good to people who actually LIKE their job and want to remain at them.
Well, that's not a good way to keep morale up, is it ...(*cough*...Rusty York, former FWPD chief).
Seems to be an issue with certain departments downtown, and perhaps now, we're seeing the forest for the trees when it comes to "how things work"...or how the "king" wants them to work.
I've had my share of upper management "run-ins", and I spoke my mind when there was something amiss.
Nothing wrong with being called on the carpet, as long as the "brass or suits" are willing to LISTEN, and not just "hear" what you have to say, and will work with you to resolve honest issues.
In this case, management seems more intent on finding out things related to the exposure of information, rather than the content OF that information.
That's not a good sign for the "rank and file".
Be fun to see how this is solved, and who is elected as the "scapegoat", because you know every situation like this creates one.
*** Last back to the barn...yes, there are a lot of people out there that take their job seriously, are damn good at it, and see it wrong to change things that don't NEED changing.
I know...I'm one of them, as was my father and his father before him
Maybe it's genetics...or a sense of professional morality..call it what you will.
When someone takes a chance of YOU, it's YOUR job to be the best person they hired...prove to them that "they" made the right choice.
Because, as I always am saying here,  life is about making such choices, isn't it?
The problem arises when those higher up "the food chain" decide on something mainly designed to feather THEIR cap...make THEM look good, sometimes, at the company's expense.
It's all about these micro-power-trips by such people.
All the employees want to do is a good job, garner decent wages as a result, and produce a quality product or service.
Hardly seems like a monumental task, does it?
Well, there are those that LOVE to change things...mostly for the SAKE of change, with no regard for the long-term effect on the business, productivity, efficiency, or even...the way a city operates.
It's all about MONEY (in their pocket, not yours), and POWER, and being "better than the other guy".
Bend over - here it comes again.
While it's desired to be the BEST nation on the planet and we have PROVED that), we're not happy to settle for being the BEST 2nd place city or business..gotta play "keep up with the Joneses"...nah, we'll blow the wad to be #1, and the problem with that is that all the OTHERS are shooting for the EXACT same thing. Everyone at the top eventually succumbs to the next guy.
Yes, in smaller situations, it's very  lonely "at the top", and sooner or later, those that want it and get it...find that much out.
*** Don't forget to set your clocks and watches AHEAD ONE HOUR (0200 hrs Sunday morning) as we go back into the DARKNESS until the fall.
Sorry...you LOSE an hour of sleep.
Not my fault...OR my choice.
Have yourselves a good weekend.
Be well, make a difference to someone today, and as always...
Stay SAFE out there, America.
