Thoughts For Thursday...

The mild weather continues in the Heartland of America, and it sure beats the hell out of what's going on in the Pacific Northwest (where they get rain about 300 days a year).
They're dealing with floods out there now...not a pretty sight.
Not even sure if WE will have a white Christmas yet, but we are hopeful.
It's not like we haven't lacked one BEFORE, right?
Our Hoosierland weather for today will see us with more of the same as far as the temps go. Highs will be into the upper 50s, and partly to mostly cloudy skies and breezy conditions follow us around today.

He was married for 69 years to Dolores Hope (nee DeFina) and died at the age of 100 at his home in Toluca Lake, California.

During his life, Hope was presented with over TWO-THOUSAND HONORS and AWARDS including FIFTY-FOUR honorary doctorates.
And although he was never nominated for a competitive Oscar, he DID receive FIVE honorary ones.
Not a bad run, if you ask me. And his comedy style is still funny.

The good news is that Indiana has a reduced rate of diabetes, we drink less (tell the DUI checkpoints and LEOS that find too many impeded by alcohol while driving that one), and we're more physically active than in years past.

I have not touched a copy of TIME magazine for more years than I can remember, and I can remember when it was a GOOD magazine (that was a few decades ago).
Since then, it's not even worthy to use as lining for a bird cage or the cat's litter pan.
Consider the cover of the "Person of the Year".

WHY?
Well, she WAS better than the "runner-up" -  Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS.
Caitlyn Jenner was also a runner-up. as was the "Black Lives Matter" movement.

Granted that in the past, TIME featured Hitler (1938) and Josef Stalin (1939 and 1942), and Khrushchev (1957), and Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini (1979), and Barack Obama (2008 and 2012), so you can clearly see that some years the standard of journalism DID slip a lot.
Goes to show that the LEFTARDS are running a majority of our media.
*** Next up, and changing gears here let's talk (quality) television...for me, anyway.
There are few shows that I really enjoy on cable these days.

I love DOCTOR WHO  (on BBC America), but you already could figure that one out), as well as THE FLASH and ARROW (both on the CW channel).

I also enjoy SUPERGIRL on CBS, and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Agent Carter.

So, it's not a surprise that I would find a new show set to debut early next yea,r which is a spin-off from THE FLASH entitled LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.

This is from the DC universe, and already looks to be well done.
The Flash has already introduced Hawkman and Hawkgirl.
But the really cool thing about most of these shows - many appearances for these shows offer those actors from Doctor Who. The crossovers are kinda neat to see. Completely different characters, but the same actors/actresses. I like that.
Now, much of this won\t matter at all to most of you, but here goes anyway...

Colin Salmon - also in 3 Bond movies

On Arrow, the stepfather (Walter Steele) of Oliver Queen was played by the same actor who was "doctor Moon" in Doctor Who (Silence in the Library - Forest of the Dead).

As Dinah Drake-Lance.

River Song (Alex Kingston), the daughter of Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) from many of the Doctor Who episodes also played Laurel Lance's mother in Arrow.

Can't get away from traveling in time.

And speaking of Arthur Darvill, he's set to play the main character (Rip Hunter - Time Traveler) in the new CW series LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.
The DC universe is being well-represented on the small screen.

John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who and Torchwood series) is Malcolm Merlyn aka the newest incarnation of League of Assassins's R'az Al-Gul.
Also (not Doctor Who related), Brandon Routh, who played Superman on the big screen, became Ray Palmer (The Atom) on the Arrow series and will join the cast of LEGENDS next year.
And, on this week's Supergirl episode, we were introduced to  J'onn J'onzz "The Martian Manhunter"

*** Last back to the countertop...There is nothing wrong with putting a little FANTASY into your life. As children, we played "pretend" with anything and everything.

But, as we grow up, we tend to pit away such things because we have to deal with LIFE-101.
That's not to day we can't indulge that "inner child" once in a while through hobbies and such.

In fact, to NOT have some form of fantasy in one's life tends to stifle creativity and impedes our ability to IMAGINE.
As with most anything in life, we should never forget Ben Franklin's "Everything in MODERATION" gig.
Seems he was onto something there.
I like to believe that the more BALANCED a life is, the BETTER it is, and the better YOU BECOME.
Conversely, the more IMBALANCED a life becomes, the worse it is, as evidenced by so many of the mental health issues that befall our nation. It's those people who have this problem with the separation of fact from fantasy.
And they often act upon those wrong impulses to their eventual and logical conclusions.
The Bible has told us that "there is a time (season) for everything", and there's no delineation between good or bad here.

That is something left up to US.
WE determine what is good OR bad, and with the proper upbringing and adherence to many basic themes that guide human behavior, we tend not to stray that far from the "straight and narrow", right?
It is ALWAYS about choices, isn't it? That's why it's important to choose wisely, hmm?

It's really a re-branding of the old term "urban renewal". Sounds fancy, yes?
Much of this is based on THEORY, and that means a lot of people downtown cross their fingers.
I tend to shy away from this because it seems like city leaders just toss a coat of paint on   building with all those broken windows...WITHOUT fixing ANY of those windows in the HOPE that someone else comes along later, buys that building and has money to fix the windows themselves.
Cities LOVE to revamp an area without regard to the ROOT cause of the problems that brought down that part of a city in the first place...or the sheer ignorance they display as they tout THEIR "solution" when they never even get close to addressing the real problem.
Sometimes, in order to change the blighted parts of a city, you HAVE to change the faces (and the hearts) of those inhabiting it.

Hope we don't hear a FLUSH.

I would prefer gentrification over this TIF stuff, but then again, I SEE what the problems are, and certainly don't live in some ivory tower with a nice set of blinders on.
Cripes, at this rate, the ENTIRE south side will be a bloody TIF district...!

*** I was thinking that with ALL the Christmas movies on ALL those channels, this must really be pissing off the heathen among us...GOOD, they deserve it.
I mean, you can practically go non-stop and surf from movie to movie for the month leading up to Christmas.
Now, I'm only interested in a few movies (and shows)...and I like it that way.

I got my SCROOGE movie (1951) from the UK, WHITE CHRISTMAS (of course), IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (already had it on once so far), and probably one of the most forgotten movies that takes place over a Christmas holiday - DIE HARD!

You tell 'em. 

I mean what IS Christmas without officer John McClain taking on the bad guys against lousy odds...and WINNING the day? Gotta kinda poetry to it, doesn't it?

And we have to watch GARFIELD'S CHRISTMAS (never shown on TV in INDIANA - the state where creator Jim Davis lives and works).
It's on DVD for us.

Also, there is PREP AND LANDING - BOTH episodes (Naughty vs Nice). That's become my new holiday favorite show.

I also watch THE POLAR EXPRESS...great message and fantastic animation.
Then finally, there are the DOCTOR WHO Christmas specials..something that was started with the series one "reboot" of the franchise around 2005. Nice touch, too.

Last Christmas special.

The ONLY science fiction show to do this on a regular basis.
There are a few more movies I may watch if time allows, but the ones mentioned are THE ones for me to view every single Christmas season.
*** Last back to the toothbrush holder...as the holidays grow closer, it's important to remember WHY we celebrate in the manner we do.

It isn't just some "shop-fest" designed to help merchants big or small to get "into the black".
To me, Christmas has always served as a reminder of how to practice a personal renewal....a new beginning as it were.
And considering that the NEW YEAR was right around the corner from Christmas, it seemed only fitting to look at it that way.
Whatever the previous year had to offer and whatever problems beset us, we could start over in some manner, strive to become better people, be more productive individuals, and grow in God's grace.
Certainly we often fall short of such lofty expectation, but that should NEVER deter us from the ATTEMPT to do that which I have just mentioned.

Sure, it's nice to get "stuff", but it's JUST as fulfilling to be able to GIVE...to be charitable in whatever way shape or form we can, and not to seek a specific monetary level, but at any level that we can.
God does not judge us on HOW much we can give, but rather by the HEART in which we give it. And I think that's as good a way to proceed as any, hmm?

Tuesday Tidbits...

Well, THIS morning is a far cry from yesterday morning.
We've some serious low overcast out there, but that should be leaving us by the afternoon.
And to add to any angst, we had a very low-flying airliner come over the house before 0600 hrs. 
All you could see were the blinking lights on the wingtips, which gave evidence as to HOW low the plane was. Given that the overcast has about a 200-300 feet ceiling, that plane was under FAA minimums...which SHOULD be 1100 ft at 4 miles from the outer marker.

But it's not like I know anything ABOUT flying or FAA requirements for safety.
(oh, wait...I DO)
Guess those at FWIA won't be happy until they put a plane into the houses out here?
Anyway, the rest of our Hoosierland weather is going to find us with those clearing skies that provide limited sunshine, and temps reaching into the UPPER 40s. Not a bad end to a craptastic beginning.
Beware of any ground fog during the AM rush hour, though.
The local weather-folks are saying that any fog is "patchy".

I saw excerpts from Obummer's mouth-fest aka his latest prepared speech...not impressed in the least.
All he seemed to talk about was tolerance for MUSLIMS...everything about MUSLIMS.
And for it being Hanukkah, not ONE word about JEWS.
Naturally, there was also more bullshit being spewed over GUN (read people) CONTROL.
All these libtards want is a disarmed public (if they had their way).
History proves all dictators love to pull this one off early with their people.
We've got god enough laws already on the books.
What we need is better ENFORCEMENT OF those laws.
I don't how many times you can tell these idiots that before it begins to sink the hell in.
These people (and this president) want total tolerance for everyone BUT when it comes to conservatives, or Christians, or law-abiding gun owners, then the tables turn. Wow, doesn't quite seem like EVERYONE, does it?
Seems a might closer to "picking and choosing" to me.
What happened to all that "tolerance", hmm?

Gimme a (major) "F".

"South Side Strides" reads the byline...and one has to wonder that hiring experts (and paying them, because none of them do this gratis) is a POSITIVE step?
Well, I suppose that when WALKING IN CIRCLES, that ANY step could be construed as a "positive" one, right?
Such rhetoric (and ideas) have been batted about for DECADES down here...with NO positive results.
The column mentions that "Crime and blighted housing can be part of the cause and one of the byproducts of neglected neighborhoods". It's not PART of the cause, folks...it's THE cause of the lack of retail, because over a hundred BUGGED OUT due to the crime. Who WANTS to get robbed or vandalized?
Who WANTS their employees to NOT feel safe when walking to their vehicles?
And hiring expert after expert...developer after developer isn't cutting the muster here.
Sooner or later, someone has GOT to start FIGHTING crime, and not just having the rank and file officers going from one radio call to another (many of which are 911 hang-ups that are unfounded)
Active patrols in the badlands and hot spots are the key to deterring crime. And making harsher penalties for those committing crimes are a couple good starts to the entire revitalization process.
Going around in circles just gets people nowhere, and dizzy. Perhaps that's what the problem has been downtown for decades - too many dizzy people perpetually going in circles, not knowing their ass from a hole in the ground.
Sorry, but that pig is gonna need a helluva LOT of lipstick to make it "appealing".
*** Next,  our bears are on the sofa for the holidays, and the rest of the house will be done this week, and that means boxing up all the OTHER stuff like books, models, diecast  cars, action figures, and such.

Didn't know there was that much, but you have to put it away so you can have room for the Christmas decorations.
My mom had this down to a science (could use her help, too...LOL)
There are four distinct bins we have JUST for Christmas items. The tree is in it's own box, and the ornaments are in two OTHER bins (all well-marked), Then, there are the 2 boxes of "soft" items - hats, stockings, lampshade ornaments, and kitchen holiday towels. Told you we have a lot of stuff to put out (makes a case for having about four kids...LOL)
By week's end, it will be a lot more "Christmasey" around the old "Fortress".
*** Last back to the runway... politics has it's own place in society, and it SHOULD be relegated TO that specific venue, but in recent history, we have found that politics has managed to force itself into most EVERY aspect of our society...and with the predictable results.

We have specified freedoms and liberties in this country, but we ALSO have rules (or laws) that help to keep everything (and everyone) "in check", so we don't step onto the rights of other people. At least, that's the way it's SUPPOSED to be.
We do not have the freedom to take another life (murder) for no reason, for example. Nor do we have the right to basically NEGATE any or all of the TEN COMMANDMENTS, although some might argue that we're not a CHRIST-based society or country.

I beg to differ, and the fact that our LAWS always seem to reflect BACK to the basic tenets of Judeo-Christian beliefs bears that much out. Plus, it's common sense, right?
We need to take to task those who would politicize anything and everything.
Politics needs to stay on it's OWN side of the fence, as it were, and allow the other parts of our lives to manage on their own. That would alleviate a LOT of the problems we have today, would it not?
