Humpday Happenings...

Welcome to MY favorite month...AUGUST...and it's not because I love the hot weather.
I love BIRTHDAYS (as in MINE in about 3 weeks), but let's make clear that it's a PROVISIONAL love.
I detest the RISING numbers every year (and so does the FIRE DEPARTMENT when Wifey puts the candles on the cake), but I like the cake...and whatever presents find their way to my doorstep...and the cake...LOL.
With that said, let's get busy with the Wednesday edition that happens to be packed tighter than an Olympic swimmer's SPEEDO, and if you leave now, I won't let you see my wife floss her teeth...
*** We begin today with the military quote of the week, also known as WHO SAID THAT?
In keeping with the theme of London, and the Olympics, I'm sure you'll be able to figure out this one:
"If we win, nobody will care. If we lose, there will be nobody to care."
So...WHO said that?

Meanwhile, back at the Stadium...there's THIS:
*** We've had not ONE...not TWO, but THREE shootings in the past several days (two within the past 24 hours alone) here in Fort Wayne, with ALL BUT ONE of them occurring on the...(...all together, gang...)...SOUTHEAST SIDE of the city (big surprise THERE, hmm?)

*** First up, there was a shooting over at 1844 Broadway, where one man was found by police in serious condition with a gunshot wound.
He was transported to hospital and was down-graded to critical.

Police have no suspects and no witnesses to the shooting.

*** Here's a case where a black man was lying in wait for a specific vehicle to drive by (in an alley near Pontiac St) before he opened up on it, injuring two men in the tan SUV.

We used to call that...an AMBUSH!

The shooter, one Breon Lamar Scott, of the 3200 block of River Forest Drive is now a "guest" of the Allen County lockup, proudly wearing ORANGE (and flip-flops). He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.
Court docs make NO mention of a motive...(you think THESE animals NEED motive? Hell no, they do what they want).
At least someone knew who the perp was...for a change.
*** Late LAST night, there was another shooting that happened at the VILLA CAPRI APARTMENTS...and we JUST had a shooting there LAST week (see 25 July post here) that I spoke about exactly a week ago.

Sure glad I don't live at Villa Capri...cripes, you need LVL III body armor to come and go there it would seem!
The victim had been shot BEFORE as a 16-year old several years prior.
He was transported to hospital in serious condition.
This case is still under investigation with NO suspects and NO witnesses or description of the shooter.

*** FWPD SWAT was dispatched to the SE side on Serenity Drive for a hostage situation.

Seems we had one armed man with "a woman, two teens and a toddler" (typical government-sponsored and dysfunctional family unit) involved.

I heard this go out on the radio when someone called for "The V-150"...that's the name for the armored car the FWPD has in it's inventory.

At that point yesterday morning, I figured something "big" was up...correct again.

Dernail I. Brown, age 20, was the "person of interest" in this scenario...and he doesn't have any priors other than receiving stolen property and a burglary charge. A warrant was being served at the Centennial Towne Homes (government housing project...let's call it for what it IS, folks) in the 7900 block of Serenity Drive, because of a probation violation, and that's when things got "interesting".

Initially the woman said she would NOT come out, which precipitated a potential hostage situation.
The standoff lasted until 1200 hours, when the woman, teens and toddler were allowed to leave. Brown then surrendered to police and was taken into custody.
Nice job, people...no one got hurt, the bad guy gets the "cuff N stuff", and everyone goes the hell home in one piece.

*** Next up...more Olympic GOLD...

Michael Phelps is now officially the "greatest Olympian" on record with his winning his 19th medal (over the last 3 Olympics).

The Woman's gymnastic team for the USA has ALSO won gold, and that was great to see these kids beam with pride.

The equestrian show-jumping event was great to watch, as was the ROWING events and the CANOEING events...

That man-made "white water" course the Brits built was AMAZING, and it was cool to watch the Olympians attempt to play "beat the clock" in their kayaks (using a REAL canoe would be suicidal, imho)!
Cripes, that water was MOVING...reminded me of the damn COLORADO RIVER at some points!
There are folks who are finding the Olympics a tad boring, but I suppose it depends on your POV.

The sculling events (rowing) were also great to view, as I remember along the Schuylkill River in Philly, we had "boat house row" where the colleges had THEIR rowing teams and sculls housed...and they would row along the river damn near every weekend.
On the down side, some of the water polo, all of the basketball, and part of the volleyball don't do anything for me...I admit that, but everything else is something I'm not privy to, and find it enjoyable enough. I mean, I see people do things I could never think of doing even when I was that young...it's astounding.
*** Lastly...today is:
Chik-fil-A APPRECIATION DAY...!!!

And I think it's only proper to stop by and indulge yourself, should you find yourself close enough to one of their restaurants.
As I said yesterday, it's about the QUALITY of food and service that SHOULD determine the viability of most ANY joint that sells food.
You get a bunch of kids with no ambition or work ethic that consistently screw up BASIC orders, and people WILL tend to notice.

As a result, word gets around, and business will suffer.

Conversely, you have a good crew that goes the distance to perform their jobs well and makes the dining experience a good one for the customers...well, people WILL notice THAT, too...

Thing is, whenever there is a BAD experience, that person will tell TEN people, while a GOOD experience will only be told to FIVE...it's a retail/service maxim of sorts, and it happens to be TRUE.

I think every one of us is also in a similar situation when it comes to "business and customers".

If we take a page from DICKENS, we note that Jacob Marley said: "Mankind WAS my business."

I feel we all are in the "business" of LIFE itself, and any "customers" can be represented by family members, friends, relatives, or even total strangers we meet daily.
Do we, as "people in business" (living our lives) provide a QUALITY service to others?
Are we managing our "business" in a manner that will provide DIVIDENDS, or do we consistently operate in a budget-deficit?
I think if we've paid attention in life so far, gleaned knowledge and wisdom from those who brought us up, as well as mentors and the life experiences we've accumulated, we're doing okay as far as our own "business" is going...just like Chik-fil-A (well, perhaps not AS tasty...LOL)

And I feel we can all keep this business of life running much better than we realize...it only takes effort on our part.

Say Goodbye To July...

In some ways, I'd thought this month would NEVER end...what with the burn ban, the heat, the drought, and all such things brought with them.

The really GOOD news is that the weather today fits right in with the London Olympics...it's RAINING...seriously, it really IS.
(well, it was a while ago...maybe more later?)

The BAD news is that for a lot of farmers, any rain is coming too little, too late, so there goes the food prices (into the UPPER realm) for the bottom half of this year into 2013.

So, today would be a good day to go outside, get wet, enjoy the rainfall (as long as it lasts, which probably won't be all that long), and take it all a bit easier on this Tuesday.
In the meantime, we've a couple things to get off the old chest today, so let's get this show rolling...
*** If you look at this picture, it might remind you of flying over some scrub area in Wyoming, or some of the other plains states...perhaps even the southwest.

It might even appear to be some of the low country in Southern 'Nam approaching a cleared LZ...

When I went out the other day, it caught me off guard...like something you knew you saw before (from the air), so I decided to snap a shot of it.
Goes to show what drought conditions can do to a lawn that used to look a lot more like...well, a damn lawn!
Anyway, moving on...
*** The United States is now in a TIE with China for overall MEDALS at the London Olympics.

China leads in GOLD medals.
The men were not looking as good as they should have in gymnastics, but the ladies came through with gold for the U.S.A.
I spent part of yesterday watching the equestrian cross-country event, and I have to say that since I really like horses a lot (and would own one if I could afford it and we had the space), I found it rather nail-biting.
The event was timed, and included a number of obstacles to jump over...they even had a "water hazard" that the Olympians rode through.

It was held in Greenwich Park, touted as the OLDEST park in existence, dating back to 1433.

There were a couple spills coming off of a downward-slope jump, as the ground was soft and the horses wore away the grass, leaving a muddy slide for the riders to navigate.

The final "jump" was through what looked like a STARGATE...
(My inner-geek wanted an homage - Nah, it was just a big-ass upturned HORSESHOE...LOL)
The event was pretty cool to see.
The medal winners were:
1) Germany - Ingrid Klimke - riding Butts Abraxxas - time: 39.30
2) Sweden - Sara Algotsson Ostholt - riding Wega - time: 39.30
3) New Zealand - Mark Todd - riding Campino - time: 39.50
The nearest Brit took 5th place (Kristina Cook), and the nearest American took 12th place (Philip Dutton).
Yeah, that was fun to watch.
*** Last week, I mentioned about how the storm cleanup was going, and cited an article about how the CITY was on "their SECOND PASS" to get all the branches removed from curb strips.

Well, the city DID come through...FINALLY...(as in ONCE), and they picked up SOME of the stuff...but not ALL of it.

Wonder WHY that as, hmm?
Guess the SE side doesn't "rate"...

BUT, the SE side is good for one thing...LOTS of gas stations...so many in fact, that some residents are up-in-arms over (yet) another new one going up at Hessen Cassel and McKinnie, and although the story was covered on the news LAST night, no sign of it today...imagine that.

People in the area obviously KNOW that such venues already bring enough crime to the neighborhood, so what better way to make things worse, than by putting up ANOTHER gas station.
(our quadrant already has the MOST stations per capita and per square mile)

We do also have the MOST liquor stores (and convenience stores) for our quadrant than any other quadrant...and people wonder WHY we have crime in such abundance?
Gimme a break...it's been ORCHESTRATED this way...open your damn eyes.
Take a bunch of lowlifes with NO ambition, out 'em into a new form of "slavery" (government dependency), combine it with a dash of "low-income" housing they knowing nothing about, as far as maintaining it, allow them to procreate out the wazoo for even MORE government money, and then add a dose of drugs and you have the makings of a marvelous criminal casserole...eat hearty, people.
Yes, your TAX DOLLARS working hardly..or is that hardly working ?
*** It's official now...and you all knew as much...RAP is CRAP...well, sort of.

Actually, they speak about POP music in general...being LOUDER...and SIMPLER.
(oh, it's "simple" all right...for simpletons, that is)
I can say that louder isn't better....AT ALL.
Now, this study was done over music from the last HALF-CENTURY (hey, there's a lot of GOOD songs in that mix).
I'd say the last TWENTY-FIVE years is more apropos to hearing more LOUSY music...fewer and fewer songs come across the airwaves today that have ANY worthwhile staying power...that's a fact.
Maybe that's why I prefer classic rock, and the "ultimate oldies"...CLASSICAL MUSIC.
Ditto for old time JAZZ...and many of the ballads from the golden era of torch songs.
Hell, I've even embraced some "new age" music...(Enya, Vangelis, Michael Stern, etc...)
Perhaps it was those years in music class, and being in a couple choirs that got me into REAL music...

Or MAYBE, it was listening to classical music in ALL those LOONEY TUNES when I was a child...yeah, now that's GOTTA be it...LOL.

Nothing like Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd doing a takeoff on a Wagner Opera, right?
*** Lastly today...I've already gotten way too sick and tired of the whole CHIK-FIL-A story...

I LOVE the place...never got a bad meal from them...EVER. The service is 1st rate, the service staff friendly and they CAN COUNT (change).
Thing is...you have to go to Glenbrook Mall to get fed...the SE side doesn't have one...never did, either.
We just get the KFC and Popeye's or Lee's for the poultry-populace with a hankering for the fried fowl.

I can do without all of THOSE...gimme Chik-Fil-A any day over them.
Good food at decent prices, served fast and hot...what's there NOT to like?
I never had any desire to know the feelings of the OWNER of the chain...not my business.

All I DO know, is that the chain makes a GREAT product...period.
Even the lovely Mrs. Bobby G. rubbed elbows with the mascot at Glenbrook Mall...
Politics or any other BS, whether it's right, wrong or indifferent should not be the basis for being either a customer of a business or the business owner.
You meet or exceed the customer's expectations...and you do it because it's the right thing to do...THAT is what will get me coming back every time.
All this crap going around just steels my resolve to eat there whenever I'm near one
When something is done the right way..applaud it...don't bash it.
And conversely, if something is totally FUBAR...speak your mind...because you CAN effect change where it is needed.

Monday Musings...

July might be winding itself down, but the London Olympics for 2012 are, if anything winding UP.
More about that a little farther along, but first, we've lots of other items to take a peek at, so let's get rolling.
Today's weather expects to be none of what England been having (that would be RAINY), although we DID have a brief spot of drizzle earlier this morning. Temps are supposed to reach the upper 80s and yes, there IS always a "chance" of rain...just as much as there's that chance of that bank error in YOUR favor (shades of Monopoly) that dumps a few thousand bucks into the account...right?
*** We had ANOTHER round of shootings in the Summit City over the weekend...AGAIN.

This time THREE (count 'em, 3) men were sent to hospital; two in good condition, and the third one in stable condition.

The first shooting occurred Saturday around 1500 hours in the 2100 block of Drexel Ave, on the...(...all together, gang...)...SOUTHEAST side of Fort Wayne. In that event, witnesses saw a man shooting at a green vehicle. The shooter and vehicle left the scene by the time police arrived. A short time later, the green vehicle arrived at a hospital with a gunshot victim who was listed as stable. Several parked cars were also hit by gunfire and several shell casings were found on scene, and a pistol was also recovered.

In the second shooting which happened around 2000 hours at the Chapel Oaks Apartments in the 1000 block of Oaklawn Court, responding officers found two men who had been shot. They were transported to hospital in good condition.
Police believe this shooting originally took place near Pontiac and John Sts., and that the victims were then taken to the apartments in a Ford Escape (gotta LOVE the IRONY there with using THAT vehicle...LOL).
Again, this ALSO occurred on the city's SOUTHEAST SIDE...amazing how THIS side of town gets the "bad rep"...
(no, it's not amazing...it's JUST THE FACTS)
It IS interesting to note that the SE side is going through a "changing of the guard" with the (yet to be officially named) quadrant captain for the FWPD, and the crims seem to have picked up on this, because the level of crime seems to have risen markedly.
But wait, we're not quite done yet...
*** Here's a situation where you never overlook the small sh*t...

Around 1500 hours yesterday, I see this car that parked on the block for a second time...didn't see who was driving it at first, but on the second time around, I got a picture of the driver...never saw him before in the area (that immediately sends up a flag in my mind).

Plus, the OTHER car this guy gets into backs up the whole length of the block and is acting really "weird" (well, more weird than usual, even for THIS area). SO, I get the tag numbers and vehicle description, and call it into the FWPD dispatch.

Done deal, right?

Not quite.

I get a CALL BACK from the FWPD ("WTF???") and they ask me a few questions about the vehicles...no problem, but I'm now thinking something "bigger" is going on (you just get a knack for such things after a time).

Seems that the black vehicle was a *39*(stolen car), and the po-po were looking for it.
I told dispatch I took some pictures if the responding officer was interested...and he was.

When two officers came by, they went over that car with a fine tooth comb. One of the officers came to the house, and I told him I was the initial caller and I proceeded to show him the pictures I took.

He seemed to recognize the one person ("...he looks familiar" ), and wanted to know if I could print the pictures out for him.

I would have gladly done so...IF we have a decent printer, so I opted to dump the pics onto a blank 1Gb flash drive, so they could upload them and then print out the pictures (I imagine to show the person whose car was stolen to see if they KNEW the perp and to detectives handling the case).

I'm supposed to get the flash drive BACK...and I'd like to, because it belongs to the lovely Mrs. Bobby G (gift from school).

The stolen vehicle was then hooked to a flatbed an hauled away (I'd dust that baby for prints and then when I find the perp, do a comparison check...bet'cha we get a winner, there).

So there 'ya go...my "good deed" for the day...week...month...whatever.

Goes to show that paying ATTENTION means more than you think, and that many times, the PUBLIC is one of the best resources a police department can have. Never overlook the simple stuff, or dismiss it...it might be a big deal...kapeesh?

*** Now, about those OLYMPICS...
Can you say...WOW?

The opening ceremonies blew ME away (and that isn't easy to do at my age...lol)
The Bond/Queen bit was EPIC.
I mean, Her Royal majesty had to arrive at the game in a PROPER manner, right?
And who better to accompany her than MI6's own best double-O agent himself...Bond...JAMES BOND (Daniel Craig).
Wonderfully staged and played out.

And then, the Rowan Atkinson/Mr. Bean - Chariots of Fire bit was BRILLIANT.
Also, the manner in which the history of Britain was portrayed was astounding, and Danny Boyle, who directed this deserves a bloody KNIGHTHOOD.
Seeing the literary characters of children stories as well as the Industrial Revolution was a masterstroke.
To think that was only the setup...

The game THEMSELVES have been a real pleasure to watch, even IF NBC time-delays the damn events (bad idea), and is not showing as many different events as they could. Ever hear of SPLIT-SCREEN..or PICTURE-IN-PICTURE???
 (and...it's NOT all about basketball, for cripes sake)

I DID watch both the men's AND the woman's bicycle road race...MAN, was I impressed at the athleticism displayed over such a LONG period of time by SO many.

I mean, I've done my share of bicycling (maybe a 20 mile stint here and there, through wooded and macadam areas), but to endure such a LONG haul with such endurance and machine-like precision was amazing.

The ladies did it mostly in the damn RAIN, to boot...and Marianne Vos of the Netherlands deserved to with that one, believe me.

Lizzie Armistead made a great run for England into second place for the sliver medal.
The mens' event was won by Alexander Vinokurov of Kazahkstan the previous day. (not bad for a 155 mile ride)
I think I found a new sport to enjoy...LOL.

It's always good to see the USA do well in swimming and gymnastics, too...we've got a great crop of talent this go-around.
And we also won a gold medal in double trap shooting with Kim Rhode taking the medal with a score of 99 out of 100...!
Currently, we stand in SECOND place in overall medals behind China, and ahead of Italy.
We have 3 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze thus far.
For some reason, I've not enjoyed the Olympics as much in the past as I have THIS time...
Must be getting older...LOL!
*** Lastly today, I admire those that push themselves to strive for the best they can be...I know I attempt to do so, and sometimes, I fail marvelously.

But the ability to get BACK up and try again is what drives every one of us...or it should.

If you ever doubt your talents or need a motivational "push", look no farther than these Olympians, who sacrifice far more than we could ever...just for the opportunity to take a shot at being the BEST at their chosen sport.

Maybe that's the REAL underlying theme to much of this...to challenge OURSELVES...to TAKE that extra step...to GO that extra mile...to DO the one more thing we all need to do in life.
I've always said that there's nothing wrong with wanting to be better today than you were yesterday...
Do just THAT much, and tomorrow will have a way of taking much better care of itself.

Friday Follies...

Well, we had no rain yesterday, but yet, we have the same forecast for "possible" rain today, so I'm betting it's more of yesterday...no appreciable rainfall.
I will say we've more CHANCES of rain than people have CHANCES of winning that damn PCH "$5K a week for life" lottery.
(got a snowball's chance in hell of winning THAT one...lol)
So, rather than sit around waiting for things that have little possibility of showing up, let's get busy with getting into the weekend....
(because we CAN...LOL)
*** The Ft. Wayne media has been pushing this story for the past 2 days...seems we have a motorcycle THEFT RING.

Just a few years back, we had another ring that was making off with Harleys.
Now, it's all those Nipponese "crotch-rockets"...aka CAFE BIKES that are attracting the attention of thieves.
Here's a story about a welder that had BOTH of his bikes stolen from his place.
(why have TWO? I thought you could only drive/ride ONE AT A TIME?)

I know down here in the ghettohood, we have TOO damn many of them around, and they are more obnoxious than the Harleys...

These cafe bikes sound like a 6 ft. long wasp in heat as they go by, and the power-to-weight ratio is almost off the charts.

I've chronically told the quadrant captain of the FWPD about SPEEDING through the area...and we STILL have those speeders after several years.

I guess complaints to the police DO mean something, because even NOTHING (which has been done) is still "something", right?

The thieves are bolder than hell, too, swiping bikes from IN FRONT of homes, driveways and carports with abandon...doesn't matter what time of night.

In the past TWO months, EIGHTEEN motorcycles have been swiped and are probably winding up in the Caribbean...

(more about THAT statement of mine further down).

With one exception, ALL the bikes taken were either made by Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, or Yamaha.

I knew a guy that used to have a DUCATI...damn nice cafe bike (except for a nagging electrical problem), and having done my share of motorcycle riding (even with an ex-Warlock back in PA), I know my way around the pipes and forks.
But, it's pretty damn sad when you can't even HAVE a bike, for fear of some mook making off with it.
Police are speculating that the bikes are being loaded onto a truck or trailer when taken...(good guess)
Police also believe the thefts ARE linked, but have NO suspects.

The NYPD has busted THIRTY-THREE perps so far, with more arrests pending.
And this ring was also into illegal GUNS (one thug tried selling a piece to an undercover officer).
Now much you want to bet that the NYC ring has it's fingers in the "pie" here in Ft. Wayne?
Be surprised if it doesn't at all.

*** The Olympics begin tonight, and I think it'll be worth watching, except for the b'ball event. To me having our PROFESSIONAL players in an AMATEUR venue is just SO damn wrong, in keeping with the spirit of the games.
(can you say "ringer" ?)
 Perhaps if the players were COLLEGE level, it would feel better to me.

Must be interesting (logistically-speaking) to have the game in LONDON, with it being as congested as it has become over the decades.
I wonder how the opening and closing ceremonies will compare with Beijing?
Those were EXCEPTIONAL (especially for communists...lol).
I really want to see the shooting events and archery (and maybe women's gymnastics and swimming/diving).
I believe the USA will make another great showing as well...we should come home with a decent number of medals.

*** Lastly today, Glenn Beck is doing his RESTORING LOVE event down in Dallas Stadium this weekend, and it looks to blow the socks off of the city, if not the nation.

Getting back to "our" basics is what this (and his previous events) have been all about...who WE (as a nation and one people) USED to be, and I congratulate him on his efforts.

Much of what makes this country great in the past HAS been lost, or at least compromised over time, and we might blame our own complacency for this, thinking we could always just motor along without a care in the world.

Thing is, we can recapture that which we have lost, but it will take diligence on our part.

It will take time, and it will take perseverance.

It's not the most popular thing to strive for, but it IS the RIGHT thing to strive for, especially in such volatile times as these.

We...every one of us has the ability to change our nation back to the values we hold dear, if we but make the effort and want to do it.

We deserve better than what we're settling for these days, and we need to demand better of ourselves and one another.
We must at least try, and if we fail at first, try AGAIN...and keep on trying, because success never came to anyone that did nothing.
It comes to those who want to succeed, and we should all want that.
