We bid a fond (?) farewell to 2018 with a bit of rain today.
I can't tell if the sky is crying because this year is almost over or it's a portent to the coming year...
We'll have to wait and see about that, right, kids?
Anyway, our Hoosierland weather for today brings us rain for most of the day (tapering off by nightfall) and temps reaching all the way up to the low 50s (at least we're not shoveling snow).
Now, what say we start the last day of this year with a wonderfully comforting morning drink, as we see what else has been going on, hmm?
*** First off of the wet sidewalk is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
DECEMBER 31 -
---It's New Year's Eve
(guess the locals are out looking for last minute ammo sales to ring in the new year...oh, joy)
---It's Leap Second Time Adjustment Day
(I don't think I need to be THAT precise)
---It's Make Up Your Mind Day
(to do WHAT, exactly?)
---It's National Champagne Day
(maybe they mean "evening"?)
---It's No Interruptions Day
(lol...yeah, like that's gonna happen)
*** Next, looks like we once again started the past weekend off with a BANG (or several).
Here's the story:
https://wpta21.com/news/top-stories/2018/12/29/breaking-one-person-in-critical-condition-after-shooting-on-citys-southeast-side/
This took place at the Three Fountains Cooperative Apartments (gov't sponsored, no doubt) around 2140 hrs Friday night. This is in the 4000 block of Wayne Trace (yep down on the SE side).
One male was found by police in the parking area and was taken to hospital in critical condition.
*** Next, it would appear that some criminals must LIKE the food in jail. Here's the story:

And morons like this never learn, manage to post bond, get back out and do more heinous crap.
You gotta love the judicial system when they make it easy for such animals to return to our streets.
*** Next up, let's take a look at our end of year homicide list
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/local/police-fire/20181230/homicide-list
We did make it to 45 total. Looks like FORTY might be the new "normal" when setting the bar for homicides in our city every year. I'd like to be proven wrong.
*** Next, and, related to shootings, there's THIS:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/local/police-fire/20181230/gang-killings-number-belies-reality-in-city
Seems a bit of a difference between what the "office" believes and what ACTUALLY takes place ON THE STREETS.
Of course, as can be found in the article...there is a lot of TRUTH to be told:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/local/police-fire/20181230/police-cant-do-it-by-ourselves
A "lack of cooperation"...after all this time, that tells me that the THUGS seem to run much of this town, because if people are too scared to come forward, the bad guys win...simple as that.
*** Next up, A backlash against "dollar stores"? Say it's not true. Here's the story link:
https://www.citylab.com/equity/2018/12/closest-grocery-store-to-me-dollar-store-food-desert-bargain/577777/
Who who could have EVER seen this one coming, hmm?
I will say there is much to consider in this story, because I have seen what occurs with the increase in such stores.
Personally, I like them, but when you inundate an area with them, there are always unintended consequences to deal with...sooner or later.
*** Next, time for our final stop of 2018 to our "Kitten Corner"
The kids had a good weekend, even if "mommy" wasn't around.
Actually, it was mostly peaceful, with some exceptions to watch the birds fly up and empty the feeder (again).
Other than that, I'm sure they'll get a bit crazy when Wifey arrives back home later today.
*** Next up, let's make our last check-in for the year with "Midnight and Whiskers"
![]() |
"I'm comin'. Just hadda check the sidewalk." |
Only had to call Midnight back twice (for lunch, what else?).
![]() |
"I'm just waitin' for the sun to come out." |
There was food aplenty as well and treats to keep the kids happy (and fed).
![]() |
"Me too. Where did the warm go?" |
Yes, respect IS (still) earned, no matter how many legs you have.
*** Last back to the ghetto (and it's celebratory gunfire)...was this a "good" year?
Now THAT, my friends is the $64,000 dollar question, isn't it?
It really depends on YOUR perspective, which should be based in truth and laced with wisdom, unlike most of the media we've had to listen to over the last 364 days.
We had our usual ups and down, like we always do, and we've had personal joys and sorrows...again, as usual.
So, what can we expect for the coming year?
Well, probably more of the same when it comes to the news and politics.
What I can feel comfortable saying about Fort Wayne is that hopefully, we'll see an end to the reign of our current "monarch', and that, by the grace of God, the SE side will begin to see a return to some level of normalcy.
That excludes the yearly celebratory gunfire we'll be hearing a half hour before midnight until almost 0100 hrs. Bet I don't see any police (again).
(Dad always said if you gotta dream, dream big, because the price is always right)

Not on the south side. |
And, such tactics have to be BY DESIGN. Things don't get this bad down here without the lack of help (to keep it from becoming that way).
When people stop becoming "wards of the state" through hedonistic pursuits and slothful behavior, and start doing for themselves, the better off we ALL become. That should be the keystone to any society - become better, want better, and do better.
It's not unreachable, but it DOES require self-motivation and some elbow grease to attain.
And the rewards do everyone a good turn.
Therein lies the lesson for the year.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.
See all of you next year!

Aye, New Years Eve, and we have the rest of the year to split seconds...
I wonder if the judges in FTW ever get tired of these people making them look like idiots?
I don't see why classification is such a big deal. Call a spade a spade. Just stick the word "probable" in. There, statistic fixed.
Laurie's having the last great streaming fight of 2018, I'm being distracted here. Thankfully a blog comment isn't a "real-time" thing.
Grocery: So, you fail to tend to the grounds, and all it can grow is weeds, and it's the weed's fault. What BS. It isn't the Dollar stores' fault it is the fault of the government for allowing the conditions in the "field." You have to plow, fertilize, work the soil. Let it set like a vacant lot and it will grow what a vacant lot grows.
Cat dump: Prolly the above works there, too.
You have a safe NYE!
Chris:
---Agreed...and we can let the media bother themselves with splitting HAIRS, right?
---By the looks of things over the past couple decades, apparently NOT...LMAO!
---You and I think TOO much alike there...I have noticed over the years that RE-classification of certain crimes tends to skew the ACTUAL figures.
---Laurie in the virtual world of knockdown-dragouts...better than most Coliseum events, I'd wager.
(commenting is one of those timey-wimey things anyway...heh)
---Yeah, there are those STILL trying their damnedest to perpetually REINVENT THE WHEEL along those lines..
SO much for proper evolution, hmm? Maybe Darwin WAS onto something.
---Cat dump...ROFLMAO!
We shall endeavor to avoid the roaming bullets that will no doubt take flight later on.
Thanks for making this a banner year in my book.
Here's to a continuance with the coming year, my friend.
Have yourselves a fantastic New Year.
Stay safe up there, brother.
