It's no fun....bein' an illegal alien....(as Phil Collins' song goes). Well it might be not be all that much "fun", but one thing it is PROFITABLE. Just look at the "coyotes" hired to smuggle them across our border. Look at the small towns just inside Mexico that have become havens for drug gangs. Look at the people just inside OUR border who deal with illegals running through their properties during the night. Look at the money some illegals make being sent BACK to Mexico (to help the "family").I just heard that in our own quaint small town of Portland, Indiana, the Del Monte facility there was being investigated by Immigration for having illegal people working there. Imagine that. Then again, in a town of about 20,000 with a minority population in (very low) SINGLE digits, anyone with ANY thick accent will be looked at strangely., as will people of color. If memory serves, the black population there is about LESS THAN THIRTY (total people). And gee, not much crime there either...wonder why THAT is, hmm?
But I digress...
The immigration issue before us today is nothing less than nearly impossible (as fiascoes go), if we keep the status quo...which we cannot. The Democratically-controlled Senate can't even come to consensus with the bill put forth by President Bush. And with good reason. The FIRST THING you need to do is SECURE THE BORDER. Nothing less will suffice in this instance. And there will certainly be those that will say we're acting JUST LIKE the USSR did when they put up the Berlin wall. WRONG! THAT wall was put up because of COMMUNISM.
OUR "wall" (more like a very high and strong FENCE) should be put up to keep people from sneaking into our nation illegally, thereby draining our infrastructure. By the year 2020, our health care system will be in ruins...ditto our welfare system, all thanks to the influx of these illegals.
It's a FACT that by the late 1800s, there were close to THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND illegals coming across our border (a year). By the post-world war 2 era, that number was up to about SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND (a year).
Today, well that magic number (12 million in the past decade) is heard weekly. Everyone is SO concerned about "those 12-20 MILLION illegals" here. The FACTS are that the number quoted SHOULD be more like SIXTY MILLION (and that's a conservative figure). It's just that those that slipped into America back in say....1907, have been marvelously assimilated into our society, and have produced several generations OF (legal) American citizens. Catching them will never happen, so we can't even try. We just have to suck it up, and cut our losses.
I say we can't do anything about ALL those millions that have entered here illegally since the 1800s...but we CAN do something about those coming over TODAY...daily. And we need to ASAP.
And let's not create new terms to describe them such as "displaced", "disenfranchised", or"undocumeted"..they ARE what they are...ILLEGAL and as such are law-breaking people.
Now we "could" just go out and round them ALL up...yeah, right. You must want to ruin the JUDICIAL system as well, then, because our court system will come to a grinding halt if we were to pursue and then incarcerate EVERY SINGLE illegal here.
That dog just will not hunt.
What CAN be done is to go out, arrest those illegals with a criminal history (either HERE or in their native country) and THEN get their asses deported BACK to their nation of origin...period.
As for the rest (who ARE keeping their noses clean), well, you'll need SOME sort of work-visa program, as well as some form of stiff penalty to be paid to the USA for the laws they have broken to enter here. And they should also be monitored for a while (time to be determined) so we KNOW these people are still on the "up and up", and aren't just playing the system. They should be moved to the back of the immigration "waiting line" also, so as to give those wishing to become citizens LEGALLY the chance THEY deserve, and are waiting for.
Seems simple enough....in theory.
Simple in practice, though? We'll have to wait and see (as usual).
One thing I do find curious is that *if* SO MANY of our jobs are (and have been) going TO Mexico, then why the hell LEAVE, especially since there MUST be so damn many jobs there today? Oh wait...it must be the fact that in America, you can do NOTHING...AND get PAID for it (he said sarcastically, as he looked around his neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana...the heartland of America). We have citizens BORN here that do nothing...and still manage to have so many more amenities than one could ever hope to have in Mexico. That makes sense to me. Let's keep the "gravy-train" rolling by all means!
Again...I digress.
In the final analysis, we HAVE to secure our border, NOW, before this mass migration of illegals strip US of OUR infrastructure, that we pay into each and every working day, with our tax monies. All we need to do is get our government to do what we PAY THEM to do, namely act upon the overwhelming will OF the people.
And according to our Constitution, THAT SHOULD be a simple enough thing to do.
