New Year's Eve...and all it brings...
Every year at this time becomes a cause for concern for those of us poor "normals" down here (more so than the rest of the year).
Sure we have our share of drunks with less sense than a dead tree when it comes to drinking and driving on nights like this, but that pretty much happens all year long, especially when you have SO many liquor stores around, as we do.
We also have our share of loud-assed party people that shouldn't even be celebrating the new year, simply because they celebrate every other 364 days of the year by not being anything close to productive to our society...and they know exactly who they are.
But that's must be a "cultural thang" (sic), and we are told to accept such behavior in the name of "diversity".
Yeah right.
And with this new fireworks law, the city has seen fit to add more "high holy days" to the pyrotechnic calendar year. Today happens to be one of those days. And I will admit it's getting harder to tell the fireworks from the gunshots in the area, which brings me to my favorite group of imbeciles.
Yes, folks, the assholes that really make my year are all those f$cking idiots that feel some perverse need to shoot off guns in a densely populated area to "celebrate".
We have enough illegal guns to supply a damn 3rd world country for Christ's sake (just in OUR part of town), so why place people and property unnecessarily "at risk" by flexing one's testosterone?
The short answer is "because they can".

Now we're not going to belabor the PHYSICS involved, nor the BALLISTICS which states that anything that goes UP...must come DOWN. These morons wouldn't know about physics or ballistics any more than they could differentiate their ass from a hole in the ground (must be all dem damn drugs makin' em do dat). So it becomes a study in "tolerance"...like the normal ones of us should TOLERATE such behavior...and just shut up and "deal with it".
I say...no.

Any behavior that has the potential for serious injury or death needs to be addressed...and summarily punished. But we all know that just won't happen. The police cannot answer the sheer number of calls put into the desk for a code 113 (shots fired), and in many cases response time is pretty damn bad. I should know...we've called most every year for the past 6 or 7 (years), with little or nothing coming from it. We couldn't even get fireworks stopped when they WERE illegal here.

I would say to the police administration to dump all your resources into THIS quadrant for the night, starting around 2300 hrs...through 0400 the following morning. That would at least make some headway to avert random gunfire (makes me wonder if the first homicide of 2008 will occur in the next 24 hours).

The alternative (doing little or nothing at all) only reinforces the notion to these idiots that committing these acts are perfectly acceptable (which they are not).
Now if you LIKE having your neighborhood sound like either the 150th anniversary of the reenactment of Pickett's Charge, or a bad day in Mosul, or even the siege of Bastogne, then by all means, move on down here, buy a house (which shouldn't cost all that much anyway), and partake in a slice of OUR "quality of life" every New Year's Eve.
Just be sure to wear a PAS/G helmet...you'll need it.
And keep your roofer on speed-dial, as well as your home insurance agent...you might require their services in the next day or so.

As for the rest of us...well, we just cross our fingers, try to watch some TV (while watching the neighborhood very closely), and get us some religion for the interim...until the morons get bored...or run out of ammunition...whichever comes first. Makes a damn good argument for taking up drinking for a living, eh?

And one helluva way to live...or is that merely EXIST. It's getting harder to tell the difference.
Thanks, Paul...and Graham. You've made OUR lives SO much better.
How about you, Tom? Any thoughts?

To my commentors, friends, relatives, fellow bloggers & their families:
Have a SAFE and Prosperous New Year
(we're just getting warmed up...BWAHAHAHAHAHA)

Just popping in to say Happy New Year to you too!

Don't feel bad about being an only child- I'm the youngest of three but according to everyone- the sole motivation for my folks starting to use better birth control methods.
