John Carpenter is STILL Alive...
And if I didn't KNOW better, I'd swear he was filming a damn SEQUEL in our city last evening.
Yes, Virginia, the fog was THAT thick. All we needed was Hal Holbrook fighting off those ghouls and Adrienne Barbeau on the radio! Come to think of it, the radio thing would be kinda nice...Adrienne always was "easy on the eyes".
Victorian London had NOTHING on this city last night, that's for sure. My wife said all we needed was Jack the Ripper stalking our streets, and I said for God's sake...DON'T give ANYONE around here ANY ideas!

When you can't see the end of your block, well, that's what we used to call back east a JERSEY fog. Not that not being able to see my neighbors is such a BAD thing anyway. It's nice to think you're the ONLY one around, even if it's temporary.
I recall an old Outer Limits episode from the 60s, where 6 city blocks were transported to another planet, and surrounding the neighborhood was this FOG. The episode was called "Feasability Study" and starred Sam Wanamaker. It was pretty sobering in it's depiction of what "could" happen.
But last night's "weather event" was right up there with Carpenter's movie: THE FOG.
And today doesn't look a whole helluva lot better, in spite of the spring-like temperatures. But never fear, the groundhog said we'd still be having SIX MORE WEEKS of winter...he just didn't say it would happen in the order we thought.
Anywho...the JSF planes that "might" be coming to FWIA are still a huge maybe.
As per WANE:
The Air National Guard's 122nd Fighter Wing based at Fort Wayne International Airport has made a list of possible locations for the F-35, a state of the art plane that only recently went into production. Currently, the 122nd Fighter Wing deploys F-16 fighters.
The F-35 is a multi-purpose jet with stealth technology. It has 3 variants which are used for different military strategies. Eventually, the F-35 could replace the aging fleet of F-16's.
On Monday, Congressman Mark Souder and the vice commander of the 122nd Fighter wing explained that the 122 FW is fully capable of supporting the F-35. It is equipped with the runway space, full weapons storage, and is close to major international airports like Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis.
The 122 FW also has a long-standing tradition of excellence with close to 60,000 hours of accident free F-16 flying operations.
Bringing the F-35 to the 122nd FW would also be a great asset to the local community. This addition would establish the longevity of a major employer, securing many jobs and continuing to put millions of federal funds directly into the local economy.
And to add to this story:
The F-35 doesn't NEED a runway the size of the one currently in use at FWIA. One of the assets of the JSF is that it can use ANY standard length runway (and with a VTOL version, all it needs is a chunk of real estate the size of the plane). FWIA (and the 122nd ANG) DOES have the ordinance storage capabilities, and it IS close to other major airports (and even more airbases in the midwest).
And since the flying record of the Blacksnakes is exemplary, I personally feel having some F-35s would be a "good fit" for the 122nd. As for bringing any "new" jobs to Ft. Wayne...well, it might bring a FEW HUNDRED, but Steel Dynamics ALREADY makes parts for the aircraft, as does ITT Industries, so that makes the logistics of the JSF repair, replacement parts, and upgrades (here) a certifiable no-brainer. it will secure the jobs already filled, and can only help our local economy.
Besides, I'd really like to get some pictures as they fly over my house. I'm getting bored with these old F-16s anyway.
But it looks like I've got me a nice 6-8 year wait.
As do we all.
