Friday Follies...
If you think we're done with cold weather, think again. Today is one of those "tease" days that lulls you into that false sense of security that because we've passed the FIRST day of Spring, it truly IS here.
(yasureyoubetcha!)
Technically, it IS, but like you should do with most politicians, NEVER trust the weather in Indiana...lol.
With that said, keep the winter coat handy, pull up a seat and together, let's take a look at what's been going on.
** As I reported here WEDNESDAY, the FWPD have been fielding more than a few calls regarding vehicle vandalism along Columbia Avenue. Someone's been punching out JUST the driver side glass.
No one has been arrested in connection with these acts, but when found, they do face some nice CIVIL charges from the car owners...oh, and a nasty reprimand from the authorities...shake that finger, raise that voice...let these jerks KNOW that YOU mean business!
** The city is selling their $240 MILLION DOLLAR sewer system river overflow recovery and processing "thing". My only contention is what the hell TOOK them so long? Yes, I know the government has MANDATED such repairs and upgrades, but cripes, wouldn't a bit of PROACTIVE behavior on the part of the city have went a long way to have the citizens feel BETTER about it?
The system could have used such repairs WAY back during the HELMKE administration...and (as usual) he...did...NOTHING.
I'm for it, as most cities are seeing such repairs a necessary evil, but one of my "other uncles" will have to understand, if I take exception to THEIR hand in my pocket. It IS only so big, and can accommodate ONLY so many hands at one time (and not for my pleasure, that's for sure).
** A Fort Wayne man was caught in Wisconsin after being on the run for 7 weeks. One Mr. Mack Porter of the 1000 block of Milton St (wasn't that near where that double shooting took place the other day?) was wanted for the shooting death of Randall O. Paris on 31 March 2008.
Another man involved in the shooting, Kevin R. Franklin, of the 2900 block of Schiele Avenue was also charged and currently is a "guest" of the Allen County lockup. The shooting took place near Lillie St. & McKinnie Avenue.
Police believe the shooting to be GANG-related, and that Porter IS a known gang member.
** More of the "SUR 13" graffiti can be seen as you drive down Calhoun St. past Pettit. Several garages have been tagged along the streets that feed into Calhoun. ** Sheriff Ken Fries is still looking at the EAST side for his new facility/academy on Paulding and Adams County Roads. Considering the current HQ is leaking when it rains, like a screen door in a submarine, it's small wonder that new digs are definitely needed.
But I can't help but think why such amenities were not incorporated into the Regional Academy at the old South Town mall site? I'm sure no one would begrudge the Sheriff's Department from USING the facilities, but Fries makes some good points when he mentions being able to have OUTDOOR training, as well as a driving course for officers.
It sure beats the snot out of having to drive up to AUBURN and PAY to use THEIR facilities (when they can get range time, that is).
Personally, I think this should be a slam dunk for the Sheriff's Department, and it IS nice to see a Sheriff with some balls for a change behind the desk and on the streets. I'd wager the morale there is pretty good.
** Lastly, we are the (lucky?) recipients of a NEW paper carrier. After over 10 years of getting really good service from one man (who I got to know quite well, and talked with from time to time), we have a... "newbie".
And, of course, we have the problems that go along with that, namely, the fact that getting the morning paper has become (for me, anyway) a pre-dawn study in the art of playing "seek and find".
Every day, it's somewhere else.
With the former carrier, it was ALWAYS on the top step. NO problems there.
Today...not so much.
I actually found this morning's paper down by the second set of steps that lead to the sidewalk. Now that screams "take me, somebody", doesn't it? Yesterday, it was in one of our flower beds (that WILL be a no-no when we get plants in there, trust me). The other day, it was halfway up the front walkway. At least the first few days it was where it was supposed to be.
Now I see it this way: If you don't WANT the damn job, then stop doing it. It's nothing less than being LAZY when you toss the paper wherever you damn well feel like tossing it. Take a few seconds and get OUT of whatever vehicle you're driving, and make sure the paper is somewhere the reader can FIND it regularly. We already called in a missed paper once since this person took over.
Then again, our area has a history of having things disappear...like news papers (and lawn ornaments, grills, siding, and sundry other items).
If you can't find the damn top step with my porch light on, then either you need a visual acuity exam, or you need to find other employment that doesn't require such "detail".
Tell you one thing...it makes a GREAT case to SWITCH PAPERS and get the News-Sentinel in the afternoon. I can always read the Journal-Gazette online anyway, and besides, I like Kevin Leininger and Leo Morris better than any reporter or editor with the J-G (is my check in the mail, Leo?), so I don't see me losing out one way or the other.
We plan to call customer service if it keeps happening (which, living on the SOUTH side, I can tell you...it will), and if it persists after calling this person on the carpet, we'll switch over...period. Then this person won't have to "exhaust" themselves tossing that HEAVY paper onto my DISTANT STEPS every morning.
See, I am looking out for others, Far be it for me to deny a person the rest they apparently SO deserve (damn candy-arm wuss).
** Oh, I wanted to pass this along to those of you that "do the nasty" and smoke (like me) while I was lighting up on of my TWENTY CENT CIGGIES...(soon to again go UP in price by 1 April)
The cost of LIGHTER FLUID...you know, for those marvelously constructed ZIPPO lighters that last a LOT longer than most automobiles, and are made in Bradford, PA, I might add...has damn near DOUBLED!
A little container, 8 fl. oz. to be exact of (generic) Walgreens brand cost THREE BUCKS and change!!!
And that was the LOWEST priced fluid around.
Didn't know the price of NAPTHA was doing so well. What happened to all that surplus NAPALM we had (and no longer use in combat) ? Surely, we could recycle that for the naptha...don'cha think?
Cripes almighty, that 8 oz. bottle is now more costly than a GALLON of gas (don't try to use that...not safe)...or a QUART of BBQ Grill charcoal fire starting fluid!
Maybe it's time to rethink the desire to "invest"?
Wall Street FUTURES...anyone?
I guess sometime soon, ALL our Zippos will truly BE...collector items.
Ah, yes...there is just SO much to embrace down here these days...you ahve to admit that.
(like my SHOTGUN...or my PISTOL)
In the meantime...have yourselves a good weekend, and...
Stay safe out there, America.
