Friday Follies...
And what a Friday it is, if you've been awake and paying attention.
So maybe we should open up the recently de-classified files kept in my basement bunker, and have a look-see as to what exactly has been going on...fair enough?
** From the: "If You Build It...They Will Film It" Department.
Now, I've always thought that WE cannot be the MOST advanced civilization in the universe, given the sheer number of possible planets, and this story about the flying silver "muffin/mushroom" bears that out.
Most of us were somehow caught up in this developing story yesterday afternoon, about a 6 year-old Colorado boy that was "believed" to have been in a runaway balloon. It captured our attention for over 2 hours, until the balloon came to earth and no one was inside it.
The boy was found AT HOME, hiding in a box in the attic.
Here's the link to the entire story:
http://www.kdvr.com/news/kdvr-balloon-boy-found-101509,0,6905331.story
It makes you wonder when someone can have this type of craft in their BACK YARD, just WAITING for something like this to happen.
I'm curious as to WHY this youngster wasn't IN SCHOOL?
And I'm also wondering IF the authorities will demand some "compensation" for the (close to) $14,000 spent on this misadventure.
Maybe Stormchaser Dad (obviously, a "good" parent, who names his kids FALCON...yeah, right) can do a THIRD "Wife Swap" show to pay the bill???
Tell you one thing...if it was MY dad and I was THAT boy...I'd be eating a LOT of meals STANDING UP for quite a while.
(Ahh...for the "good old days" of something we used to call DISCIPLINE)
** From the: "If At First You Know It Won't Work, Back Up And Punt" Department.
Indiana's Governor (Mitch Daniels) has decided to CANCEL the IBM outsourcing of the state's welfare system, citing a "flawed concept that did not work out in practice".
Here's the link to the story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20091016/LOCAL/310169996
I'll be the first one to concede that the ENTIRE welfare system IS flawed (and needs a major overhaul), but it's not because it actually DOES HELP those who are truly in need...
It is flawed because SO MANY FRAUDS are perpetrated against the taxpayers by those who can "play da system" and get something for nothing...simple as that. And I don't believe any amount of "tweaking" will change this practice.
We've gone around this time and again, yet we STILL dump billions of taxpayer dollars into a system that DOES...NOT...WORK as it was initially designed.
The FSSA still has loads of people feigning poverty, when in fact it's "free money" to whoever can give the best "sob-story". Forget the fact that these people have no desire to better themselves or even look for a real job. The cracks in the system aren't just wide enough to allow some people to fall through...they're WIDE ENOUGH to drive a 747 through!
I know of a few that the welfare system HAS helped, and they are the success stories, but still, they are too far and few between. If this was supposed to be JUST a "stop-gap" measure until poor folks got back on their financial feet, then so be it. Keep it that way.
Either make the current system work for the right reasons for those in need, or entirely rebuild the system from the ground up.
** From the: "When You NEED A Drink...You NEED To THINK" Department.
This story amazes me, and yet fully supports my contention that a LOT of the issues our society faces are born within the very households of this nation.
Here's the link to this story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20091016/LOCAL07/310169895/0/LOCAL
Since when is it OK to leave a 3 year old in a car (asleep) while YOU go and get sh*t-faced at a local bar?
Answer: It's NOT.
This happened back on December LAST year, and finally, this "father" gets charged...WTF took SO damn long?
The child was found by a passerby and taken to a nearby store to get warm...it was 19 degrees out at the time with a wind chill temperature of SIX DEGREES (of stupidity as displayed by "dad").
I am just so amazed that justice can move SO DAMN SLOWLY.
What if this child died from exposure?
Would "dad" be charged with infanticide or man-slaughter?
Methinks this "father" needs to RETHINK his priorities in life...and QUICKLY.
** From the: "Holy Hotlines, Batman...It's The Kremlin" Department.
If any of you watch the GLENN BECK show on FOX, you will know that the cable channel has been the target of a smear campaign from the White House, and the person apparently leading this is (aide/spokesperson?) Anita Dunn, who has said that Chairman Mao is one of her two FAVORITE philosophers (Mother Theresa was the other...?)...yeah, THAT Mao...the one that killed over 70,000 of his OWN people Mao.
So, in order to ensure that no MIS-information was being produced by FOX, Beck goes and installs a RED PHONE on his set, and sent a registered letter to the White House with the number, so ONLY THEY could call and inform Beck *if* any of what was being said on the program was, in fact, in error.
And so far...no calls came in, so everything that Glenn has been speaking about has to be true, considering the fact that the people he chides and takes to task have been hung out to dry, or otherwise "convicted" BY THEIR OWN WORDS.
Amazing how that works, isn't it?
And, as I am so fond of saying:
"The silence (from the White House) is DEAFENING".
(and speaks VOLUMES)
Now you can say what you want about Beck, but I've followed him since the old days on that "other" network, and I have to admit that he DOES HIS HOMEWORK. He presents the FACTS, and although he also presents his OPINION, you just can't argue with TRUTH when it's shown to you, up close and personal (unless your head is SO far up your ass, you couldn't find either one with both hands).
I like the guy...he's not a journalist, and will tell you so, straight away.
Hell, I'm no journalist either, but I will bring you the facts (as well) right here, and I will add my opinion where required.
To me, Beck is the "Everyman"...the average shmoe just trying to do what is right.
Sure, he's made mistakes (as do we all), but he's not afraid to 'fess up to 'em, put it behind him, and get on with this little thing we like to call LIFE.
You have to admire the integrity this guy displays, and the guts to say what he means.
** Lastly, to those of you with a few years behind you...take a look around you this weekend.
See if this is close to the world you envisioned or even remember as a youngster...if it even has the trappings of what your parents said might be something you were to look forward to.
And if it isn't, think about what you are doing to NOT change it...or what you CAN do TO change it for the better.
It doesn't have to be something as "bold" as organizing a tax-protesting "tea party", or writing to every senator and/or congressperson to tell them this health care bill sucks...
It can be AS SIMPLE as hugging your child..telling them you love them. It can be as simple as holding a door for an elderly person, or helping someone with their groceries. It can be as simple as engaging someone in line or at a bus stop in conversation.
It's these things (and more) that is what a lot more of us USED to do...every day...without thought.
We could gauge the pulse of the nation by the people we met daily, and may never meet again.
We should re-learn to re-connect with like-minded Americans, and talk to those who still hold fast to a system of values...and universal principles. We also need to properly teach the minds of the young and instill in them a REAL sense of value, based on morality, accountability and personal responsibility...
We CAN do it...and we SHOULD do it.
Do have a great weekend, and...
Stay safe out there, America.

LOL lmao.......falcons dad IS NOT a good spin master. wifeswap. what a family. OF COURSE noting funny going on there.....

interesting i'm agreeing with Glen Beck. what the heck.......lol

my 2 cents about welfare. when i was making 5.25 an hour. living in hud paying 299.00 a month for rent. i tried to get food stamps. i was getting medical care for my daughter. i was denied. i had the 500.00 car. and i had just got out of the military. i was told later threw friends that i should have said my car was worth nothing. then other friends said it really didnt matter about the car becouse when they got out of the military the state of indiana said they couldnt qualify for anything becouse they choose to leave their job. choose to leave a job that will send you back to a freaking war zone where you dont know whom the enemy is. 12/14 year old boys trying to get with a "fast" american woman. your own unit trying to sell you off (for fun only mind you.......whatever) for a few hundred dollars. stuck in the middle of the sand where you cant even go awol properly. enough of that. i never got a chance of a stop gap becouse i choose to leave a job called us army.

that father who left his child in the car in 19degree weather should be crucified. and people wonder why i didnt chase after her father for support. well with support comes visitation and alot of other stuff. if he didnt want to be a part in the first place why whould i even trust him with my child.

whew my darn dog is farting up the place i GOT to go. yuck.

You saw first hand some of the REAL problems with the welfare system...and YOU HONESTLY DESERVED IT!
Personally, I think ANYONE in the military is deserving of it when needed...like V.A. bennies.
(imagine how many who do NOT deserve that manage to get it)

"Dad" obviously thought more about a BREW than his child...what a freaking DUFFUS!
(good case for Darwinism...LOL)

Farting dog?
(geez...)
OK, buster...NO MORE SALAMI for YOU!

Have a great weekend.

When I was in the navy, there were people on base housing that still got food stamps (they had 6 kids, 3 sets of twins) comes to mind. Military pay is lagging well into poverty level, even with "all the great government benefits" you're still scrambling for money. Unless you're single, you're gonna be a poor sucker. I think the most I made one year was 11,500$ and that was mid 80s.

That family that had the balloon IMHO it was a major stunt,, they're out of tv view, and need more attention.

And I'm not very sure anyone will call on the RED PHONE because they're a chicken**** outfit up there in the whitehouse.

Fess up to mistakes? :O Surely you jest. (and here I thought I was the only one left who wasn't afraid to admit to making mistakes and being human) Great post as usual. Sorry it took so long to get back into the swing of things.

I realize the milpay sucks BIG TIME (unless you get some brass on the old shoulder...or been an NCO for a LONG time)
But it kinda strikes as weird that people wouldn't stop and THINK about having ALL those kids KNOWING full well that the income level was sub-par on base.

I was always brought up to NEVER live above my means (maybe 'cause our family didn't...and couldn't unless we wanted to be another finanical failure stat)

I'm just sayin'...

Have a great weekkend.

Well, if those in political "pwer" DON'T admit to their blunders, we're going to LET THEM KNOW...that WE KNOW...and WILL call 'em out on it.

Nah, you're far from the LAST person...I think there's more than JUST the TWO of us...LOL.

I just try and NOT make the SAME mistakes OVER AND OVER...!
(I hate repetition as it is)

Have a great weekend.

A couple of years ago, I was having a conversation with a neighbor here. She was lamenting how the Township Trustee (from whom she was asking him to give her some of my tax dollars) was putting her through such a tortuous ordeal.

The problem - he wanted to send someone to her home to look it over and to make suggestions for how she could lower her heating costs. This really pissed her off. She couldn't understand how they had the right to come inside her home and violate her privacy just because she was asking them for (our) money.

lol bob, my daughters father is from there. and yes, i had thought about it becouse it was midway between fort wayne, south bend and rockford il. at one time jobs were plentiful there too. there was this tiny fact that he pissed me off alot, and the weather there is horrible. too much wind, too much rain, too much snow. plus they have those bugs that migrate threw there seasonally. those hugh stinky bugs.............yuck. i would have liked it if it wasnt for all of the following. it was a blessing that i didnt go up there anyways i heard that the post office is closing down stations left and right. closing down a plant up there and slashing jobs. i'll stay in my backword indy for now. lol..........so close but yet so far away....lol

Never underestimate the power of some governmental agency to want to "put THEIR finger in YOUR pie".

I treat ALL people that come to my door in the manner befitting a VAMPIRE...
In other words, I have to INVITE you in...you don't just COME in when it strikes YOUR fancy.

I think there is a great analogy there with "bloodsuckers"...don'cha think?

Thanks for stopping by..

YOu just stay where the JOB is, the MONEY is, and your personal SAFETY is...

Compromise ANY of those three, and it's time to "pull up stakes" and move the tent outta "Dodge" and onto greener pastures.
(unless you enjoy a "good fight").

Take care and thanks for commenting.

bob, that's what i feel about people wanting to come in my home too. in fact the other day i was think that vampires or evil is bigger then i really thought it is. and normally the only way evil comes is when you invite it in. eithor threw the phone, or the door, or old friends who come to call. i'd rather talk to the old friend on the phone or treat them to dinner before they come to my home. your right about the vampire theory. it should be more like an aspope fabel.

Bob G. said...

Indy:
It's just that it was the FIRST thing that came to my mind (fertile with "dung" as it is...LOL)

And it does seem appropriate.
You have to INVITE such evil in (just like YOU said)...whether it's by your actions, or thoughts.

You don't have to just physically "open a door"...there is a metaphor there.

Lots of catching up to do on your blog, as I've seen your name around often but never read (apologies) - and knowing you're a "home boy" makes it all the more reason for me to read!

About Glenn Beck: LOVE him. LOVE him. LOVE him. He tells it like it is (the truth) and I'm just glad there is someone on our side who really gives a damn.

Have a great weekend.

BTW, you mentioned on Moe's blog about the Berlin Farmer's Market (or the Auction, as we always called it). I haven't been there in a LONG time, but I was always there as a kid. Loved it.

Katey:
Glad to have you on board as a reader..thank you.

What you WILL find here is a lot of TRUTH...(blame that on my parents...and the Boy Scouts...and an oath I took when I worked for the FEDS...LOL)
And even "if" being truthful gets me in trouble, I don't mind...it let's me know I'm "bothering" someone...
And there's a lot of folks that NEED "bothering" these days...LOL!

Glenn and I share a LOT of similar values and beliefs, and I'm glad he jumped to FOX.
I must have missed him when he DJed in Philly. I was following John DeBella and Randall & Cook.

And the Berlin Flea Market...best damn one around (indoor AND outdoor), and I've been to one in Ohio that came close...but NO cigar.
Haven't found any in Indiana that strike my fancy...yet.

Makes me wonder...is the Pennsauken Mart still around?
Spent a lot of time there, as well as the TAC-PAL Drive-in...when that was THE place to go on a Friday night.

Yeah, I'm showing my age now....I won't even mention the Jersey girls I dated from Blackwood to Voorhees when gas was UNDER a dollar...(oh wait, I just did...heh, heh, heh)

Thanks for stopping by.
