Humpday Happenings...
And it's another lovely Fall day out there. yesterday's temps surprised me and climbed to about 70, and today promises to follow suit, with a high in the low 70s. Again, no precipitation is forecast...maybe by the weekend.
For now, just some great weather to watch the trees change color.
One of our trees has decided to change only a FEW leaves at a time, rather than most at once...must be the "environment"...lol.
So, without any further ado, let's get started and see what's been shaking, shall we?
*** First up is our Motto of the Week aka WHO SAID THAT?
"The honest work of yesterday has lost it's social status; it's social esteem."
So, who said that?
The answer at the top of tomorrow's post.
Meanwhile, back at the
*** Next out of the barn today, in the wake of the most recent homicide where the Vietnam vet took on  a burglar and ended that perp's extensive criminal life, the FWPD "capo" has seen fit to off up a quasi-PSA (public service announcement) regarding home defense.
And here's the 4-1-1:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20131009/LOCAL07/310099961/1002/LOCAL
Now, IF the perp is INSIDE your house it's perfectly legal to use deadly force (the castle doctrine), BUT...when the perp has already took what he wanted from your house and is FLEEING, that's another (legal) issue, states Chief York.
And that's where the tried and true Philly PD dictate comes into play:
"After you shoot and kill the perp, drag them back INTO the house...problem solved."
The article does have the Indiana law regarding use of (deadly) force for citizens.
And, the FWPD crime prevention office offers information on how homeowners and renters can secure their residences with locks, lighting, landscaping or a dog...which is all well and good until the perp is INSIDE, then whatever you did still wasn't enough, was it?
(and all bets are off)
Still a recent spate of burglaries has some residents (single moms and older folks) have taken to "arming up" with sales at Freedom Firearms rising about 20%-25%...!.
That's got to tell you something when people know the police aren't able to get that handle on rising crime.
(it's called not having ENOUGH OFFICERS)
The co-owner of the gun shop states that mostly, women are looking for something small that they can conceal, and that wheel-guns are the weapon of choice.
That's a good call there, because wheel-guns tend to be more dependable than semi-autos.
Every time that hammer drops on a loaded chamber, a wheel-gun will go "bang".
(ammo issues are another thing that we won;t get into right now)
Now, who woulda thunk it? People LEGALLY getting guns to DEFEND themselves and family and property in Fort Wayne?
Well, the writing was on the wall here as EARLY as the 1990s (under Paul Helmke) and perhaps even farther back than that (under Win Moses)...but when nothing gets done (to stop the crime), that's exactly what GETS done.
Moving on...
*** A new study says that older people that live near airports are THREE TIMES as likely to have heart conditions related to (hope you're sitting down for this one, people)..HIGH LEVELS OF CONSTANT NOISE..
(what?)
Here's the story link:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/larryhusten/2013/10/08/people-who-live-near-airports-at-increased-risk-for-cardiovascular-disease/
Now, talk about a really "DUH" moment here.
Actually, all this is nothing new, and was pursued by the EPA (of all agencies) in the 1970s regarding aircraft and airport noise.
The EPA closed down THAT division during the late 80s, and hasn't been revived since...but perhaps it's about time?
Workplace noise issues were handed off to OSHA, and that's fine, but what about the CITIZENS in THEIR HOUSES?
I rail against boomcars ALL the damn time, not to mention illegal fireworks weeks in advance and following specific days of use.
We also have some low-flyers coming into FWIA, and it's not the 122nd ANG Black Snakes.
We're talking larger COMMERCIAL carriers that overfly us UNDER 1100 ft (the altitude that used to be the limit for 4 miles outbound of the runway threshold). Since the early 2000s, the altitude has been getting lower, but authorities and even the FAA say that's fine...
Yeah, well, if I EVER see tire marks on my new roof, there WILL be hell to pay all over the land.
Let;'s just say that studies in DECADES past have shown without a doubt that chronic exposure to LOUD noise (above 85 decibels - prolonged) contributes to MANY physiological problems, as well as emotional and mental health issues...like STRESS!
And yet, all those damn loud car stereos are doing NO harm whatsoever...even to the children in those vehicles, right?
Not a chance in Hades, folks!
All this does irreparable harm to kids, and has been proven (Chicago study) that it diminishes the ability of the kids to LEARN in the classroom...well, THAT explains a lot, doesn't it?
If you want to go after ONE "type" of noise...go after them ALL...let's not pick and choose here. it's ALL bad...period.
*** Lastly today, we have gotten to be a less friendly society in general...we see it all the time.
Now, there are still "pockets of resistance"...aka friendly folks, and all of them are to be applauded for swimming upstream, against the societal current, as it were. It's certainly not as easy as in times past.
And that's a sad commentary on "us"...
We used to be better than that...a LOT better.
When you were busted for a crime, that USED to be a millstone about your neck, whereas today, it's more like some perverse "rite of passage" for many young people.
Then again, back in those days, we had a lot more RESPECT for a greater number of people, starting in our homes and schools.
The longer we attempt to ignore what's going on will only serve to make it more difficult to reverse such a trend.
Socially-speaking, it always takes several generations to change what only ONE generation does - we see as much with the welfare roles.
Some things you can;t help, like the aging baby-boomers...can't stop time on that one.
But you (we) CAN do more to change the road we, as a society find ourselves.
We honestly need to get back to our basics, and good old civility is the best start we could hope for.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

Three words: Don't. Buy. Remington. :)

"Lastly today, we have gotten to be a less friendly society in general..."

You got that right, Bob. I blame the breakdown of the family. And for that, we can thank the welfare state created by the so-called "War on Poverty." What's our exit strategy for that war, anyway?

NO remington...I prefer Winchester (white box) or Federal.

As to the not-so-friendly society?

I swear that today's world seems SO unlike the one I grew up in, I must have been transported to BIZARRO WORLD (where everything is ass-backwards)

I mean when a kind act, word or deed is viewed as a cause for celebration rather than the "norm"...something's definitely wrong.

We used to do that stuff ALL the time...gratis.

The oddballs, criminals and loons used to be the BAD seeds in society (and we put them away)...unfortunately they're all mainstreamed with the rest of us these days.
And the lines of normalcy have become blurred.

I miss our OLD world.

Thanks so much for stopping by today and commenting.

You roll safe out there.

No kidding. All part of Satan's little plan. I hate to say it, but it will be somewhat amusing to watch the hosts of hell saying, "Man, we wuz played!"

Chris:
The weird thing about that study...it was done MORE than over a DECADE AGO!
Students whose classrooma were CLOSER to the elevated trains passing nearby the schools had LOWER test scores...go figure.

And no one in governement ever saw ANY corrolation...with poor test scores, lack of education, the subsequent unempolyment, the crime...ALL the things that constant exposure to this noise will do and cause...it's just a cultural thing with these people.
And they're "entertained", so what's the big deal?

(Oh, there is a price to pay there)
You'd think the DEMS would be on this like flies on horse-hockey!

Not a peep...and yes, they ARE being played, esp. by the progressives.

Thank you for stopping by today and commenting.

Stay safe up there.
