Humpday Happenings...
Well, it's sure turning out to be one of "those" weeks, at least in the entertainment world, isn't it?
And, I'll be getting around to that in a moment, but first, let us take a look at our Hoosierland weather.
Today will be a lot less rainy and cloudy (finally, the sun has decided to get up), with temps back up around the mid-to-upper 70s.
My kind of August...NICE!
So, without any further deviations or tangents to speak of, go and grab a cup of your favorite morning fortitude and we'll see what this day brings.
Fair enough?
*** First out of the boat-slip today is our WHO SAID THAT? quote of the week.
"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world."
Now who said that anyway?
And if you guess ME (again), nope, sorry...wrong.
It's also NOT a quote from the movie V for Vendetta, although there are some similarities to a line or two from the flick.
There is SO much truth in all the arts...IF you know where to look.
Now THAT you can quote me on...LOL
Meanwhile,back at the laugh factory...
*** As is the custom this month, it's time again for our look into "What the hell happened today, Bob?" as we take note of the events and people for today.
AUGUST 13:
1521 – After an extended siege, forces led by Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés capture Tlatoani Cuauhtémoc and conquer the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan.
(and then diseases from the Spanish decimated the Aztecs as well)
Let's censor the press.
1624 – The French king Louis XIII appoints Cardinal Richelieu as prime minister (and we all know how well THAT worked out)
1831 – Nat Turner sees a solar eclipse, which he believes is a sign from God. Eight days later he and 70 other slaves kill approximately 55 whites in Southampton County, Virginia.
(Guess they didn't need a good reason back THEN, either)
1913 – First production in the UK of stainless steel by Harry Brearley.
1918 – Women enlist in the United States Marine Corps for the first time.
Opha Mae Johnson is the first woman to enlist. (Semper Fi, MA'AM!)
1942 – Major General Eugene Reybold of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers authorizes the construction of facilities that would house the "Development of Substitute Materials" project, better known as the Manhattan Project.
An "awwww" moment in every child's life.
1942 – Walt Disney's fifth full-length animated film, Bambi, was released to theaters.
(and we cried as children when we watched it)
1961 – East Germany closes the border between the eastern and western sectors of Berlin to thwart its inhabitants' attempts to escape to the West. (Welcome to Checkpoint Charlie)
Okay, been 3 weeks - we're ready to come out...seriously.
1969 – The Apollo 11 astronauts are released from a three-week quarantine to enjoy a ticker tape parade in New York, New York. That evening, at a state dinner in Los Angeles, California, they are awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Richard Nixon.
1978 – One hundred fifty Palestinians in Beirut are killed in a terrorist attack during the second phase of the Lebanese Civil War. (Again, some things NEVER change)
Notable Birthdays:
1860 – Annie Oakley, American target shooter (d. 1926)
Yes, THAT Bert Lahr.
1895 – Bert Lahr, American actor and singer (d. 1967)
Going to the "birds"?
1899 – Alfred Hitchcock, English-American director and producer (d. 1980)
1920 – Neville Brand, American actor (d. 1992)
Let's add COMMUNIST DICTATOR to that
1926 – Fidel Castro, Cuban lawyer and politician, 15th President of Cuba
1930 – Don Ho, American singer and ukulele player (d. 2007)
When hockey was HOCKEY!
1949 – Bobby Clarke, Canadian ice hockey player and manager
1951 – Dan Fogelberg, American singer-songwriter and guitarist (d. 2007)
1959 – Danny Bonaduce, American actor
Okay, she's cute, too.
1964 – Debi Mazar, American actress
Sebastian Stan as "Bucky"Barnes (right) w/ Chris Evans
1983 – Sebastian Stan, Romanian-American actor
And, it's also International Lefthanders Day.
Now you know more than the person running your city.
*** Next up, that riots and looting in Ferguson Missouri are entering their THIRD day, in spite of both the local NAACP and the slain teen's parents calling for a halt to this chaos...yeah, falling on deaf ears time there for sure.
Dis sh*t's mine, motherf$ckers
Here's the latest:
http://www.smh.com.au/world/st-louis-riots-police-use-tear-gas-rubber-bullets-on-crowd-in-ferguson-protesting-teen8217s-death-20140813-103euj.html
Amazing how some people will CHOOSE to devolve into an anarchistic mindset at the drop of a hat, isn't it?
I find it so typical of the entitlement mentality that permeates most every inner city and way too many ethnic neighborhoods.
Free stuff because you can get away with taking it...not seeing any justice for the slain here...just "sticking it to whoever" (probably "Whitey").
Doan gotta use mah EBT fo dis stuff.
Can't really see evidence of BETTER race relations...at least NOT in the last SIX YEARS...can you?
If anything, it's gotten WORSE...much worse, and an event such as the one in Ferguson can be just the impetus to light the wrong fuse and cause a greater widespread scenario of riots in OTHER cities.
Remember a few years back, when these black "flash mobs" would target stores and malls around the country?
Absolutely NO reason behind those events...they just "happened", with store owners (and consumers) taking the "hit" on that.
Too thin a blue line here.
We never heard anything further from those arrested, or even IF all the perps were even caught.
We just :"let it slide"...AGAIN (because they're poor...or just too damn STUPID to know right from wrong?). We're all being bamboozled here. Time to wake up and smell the businesses burning.
Moving on...
*** The entertainment world has lost another icon...from a time past in the golden age of cinema.
Lauren Bacall has passed away at the age of 89, and here is her WIKI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauren_Bacall
"You do know how to whistle, don'cha?"
Damn shame..she ALMOST made it to her 90th birthday.
Back in the day, she was a REAL hottie...reminded me of Leann Rimes in some ways
She was born in the BRONX, so you KNEW you didn't mess with her...lol
She obviously caught the eye of one of her costars...one Humphrey Bogart, and they eventually wed, with he being TWENTY FIVE years her senior.
I will say she aged damn well, and I even remember her doing those coffee commercials.
Her WIKI is rally worth a read, because she was a "spitfire", and a self-proclaimed liberal. She co-starred in THE SHOOTIST with John Wayne, and despite their OBVIOUS political differences, they got along very well.
Lauren passed away in Manhattan...once a New York girl...ALWAYS a New York girl.
*** Last back to the theater today...again, we see those who take from life, never giving back, and others who give TO life...not only their but the myriad of people around the world simply by being who they are (or were).
I suppose that as important as what you do IN life is, what you leave behind...your "legacy" if you will, is what will outlive you.
Being an icon in entertainment is one thing, but being a good man or woman is JUST as important, at least I think it is.
And it can be to a total stranger.
Wanting to do the right thing, assisting those who truly need help, and being there not just to voice your opinion, but to listen to the opinions of others goes a long way to secure that legacy.
It's funny how MANY souls we "touch" in life by what we say, what we do, or merely by who we are.
The numbers would be staggering, and we're not even aware of it.
We just go through life, often unaware of those we influence along the way.
I think you'd be surprised at how many people YOU have already had some impact upon.
And that should bring a smile to your face, if not in this world, then definitely in the next.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

"Guess they didn't need a good reason back THEN, either"... LOL!

Another one gone... classy enough that you aren't hearing the same trash you are with Robin Williams.

Bert Lahr and Alfred Hitchcock... separated at birth????

I think the governor of Mizzou needs to call out Martial Law, let loose the Guard, with orders to lock and load. Even Marlin Perkins would want nothing to do with that breed of animal.

Really shouldn't put Bonaduce's name that close to a pretty girl (or an ugly one either).

FLYERS BLOW! FLYERS BLOW! (long time Islander fan here)

Chris:
Yeah, animals rarely change their "stripes" (which is usually found in this case on those prison uniforms)...LOL.

Bacall was from a different era...and older (died of natural causes rather than suicide), and in spite of HER (also) being LIBERAL, is not going to be "politicized".

The GUARD would be a good idea..but you KNOW the NAACP will not permit it.

Bonaduce...LOL.

And I agree that the Flyers blow NOW, but back in the mid-70s, with TWO Stanley Cups under their belts, it was another story.
(and I did like the Islanders too more than the Rangers, especially Chico Resch...damn good goalie)

Thanks for stopping by top comment, brother.

stay safe up there.

Lauren Bacall - "Here's lookin' at you, kid."

She has sailed to Key Largo for the last time.

Classy lady, fine actress - and I never thought of her as liberal (was she really?) so I could watch her movies.

Gadfly:
Was she EVER...she proudly proclaimed she was an "ANTI-REPUBLICAN" (when pressed about such things).
But, in the era she was from, you kept politics OUT of work (or you did't work).

Much of Hollywood's history up and through the "blacklist" era is a really goof read.
Those who were liberal (then) were NOWHERE close to what we see today. And never as boisterous about it.
She was a class act to the end.

Hey, thanks much for swinging by today to comment.

Stay safe out there.

"Development of Substitute Materials"

Ha! Now that's what I call a good euphemism. ;)

"Can't really see evidence of BETTER race relations...at least NOT in the last SIX YEARS...can you?"

I guess the Prez was too focused on foreign policy to work on improving race relations.

Bob G. said...

John D.:
I got a kick out of that when I read it...how "government"...LOL.

When it comes to FOREIGN policy, I think you (when you're President) best start AT HOME (where charity begins).
If you have (and are running) a THRIVING nation FIRST, then, and ONLY then can you think of aiding others.
A good DOMESTIC policy can only HELP with any FOREIGN one.
(not the other way around)

But I'm sure someone in D.C. already knows that...right?

Thanks for rolling up today to comment.
Stay safe out there.
