'Tis A Fine Day For A Tuesday...
Welcome to the one day a year where everyone who's anyone is IRISH.
(and the rest can kiss me blarney stones in Kilkenny)
Our O'Hoosierland weather today will see us with slowly dropping temps, so whatever was the high was when you got up os pretty much it for the day.
We should drop down around 40 degrees by late afternoon
Partly cloudy skies will be following us around as well.
And now, let's get that warm and comforting cup of whatever is your pleasure, as we see what's been going on elsewhere...
*** First off of the Emerald Isle is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
March 17 -
---Today is SUBMARINE DAY...wonder if they mean the sandwich or the boat?
It wasn't pretty, but it WORKED.
According to (my declassified) sources, today is the day, back in 1898, that one John Philip Holland FIRST demonstrated his submersible craft, called the "Holland VI" (so what happened to the FIRST FIVE?).
It was (then) Asst. Sec. to the Navy, Teddy Roosevelt, who recommended buying the Holland, later named the SS-1.
Looks damn yummy to me...
But I have to say we should not forget the sandwich, either.
*** And it's also (as if you hadn't guessed)...SAINT PATRICK'S DAY.
Here's the WIKI if you want the back-story:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick%27s_Day
Today's traditions differ much from the earlier days, in that we have all this green beer and various foods.
I've have green beer ONCE...it was so-so. (musta been a DOMESTIC...lol).
A REAL beer, ale, or stout doesn't NEED to be green.
And, as for green food...well, there are SOME that are fine, but I'd steer clear of others.
Broccoli, peas, guacamole, lima beans, cabbage all OKAY.
But whenever I start to see green CHEESES or MEATS...gotta draw the line there.
Sure don't need to get sick over something like THAT, hmm?
We have parades, rivers turned green, and celebrations all over (mostly for those with nothing better to do that get drunk one more day of the year). 'Tis fine indeed (finer for others)
He's a GOOOOOOD boy!!!
Just hand me a Guinness and some lean corned beef, and I'm as Irish as they come, kapeesh?
(and I still do a decent accent)
Moving on...
*** Yes, it's time once again for all the SHOTS FIRED and ARMED ROBBERY CALLS for last week:

Okay, so do any of you see a slight DIFFERENCE between THIS week, and say the past several months as to the NUMBER of calls?
I sure do, and yes, a majority of them are on the city's SE side...imagine that.
*** Next up, the FWPD wants OUR help (what, again?) in solving some robberies.
Funny, I try and PROVIDE them help all the damn time, and I don't see any progress being made with that.
Anywho, here are the deeds as they went down:
1) Police looking for robbery suspects who held up a woman at the Marathon station located at Spring near Wells St LAST MONTH.
Here's the link for ALL of these briefs:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/local/police-fire/Body-discovered-in-wooded-area-5591374
Gee, those two happy guys look BLACK to me.
The woman had just bought some pot from them, so they robbed her AND got the pot back.
Talk about a dumbass...guess that's what drugs do to people...makes 'em stupid.
2) Police look for a person who held up a Crescent Corners gas station early Saturday
And THIS perp is BLACK, thin, 6'3" with a scruffy beard.
3) Cabbie robbed.
This happened early Saturday at a SE side Apartment Complex (Villa Capri) Apts).
The suspect is ALSO described as being BLACK, in his 30s, 6 ft tall, slim build,
Kind of an ethnic PATTERN here, doin'cha think?
*** Here in Hoosierland, it's March Madness Time, and you know what THAT means...
It MEANS that I have absolutely NO desire to bother myself with it...period.
None of this brackets bullshit for me.
Couldn't care less.
And that's all I have to say on that.
*** Last back to Bobby McG's pub-for-one...today is ripe with history...
If you want to read about it, all you have to do is look back to ANY of my archival posts from previous St. Patty's Days to see for yourselves, and on this day, one of the things I enjoy the most has to be the MUSIC!
C'mon now, who DOESN'T like to hear the Chieftains belting out those Irish tunes, or Celtic Woman singing like a chorus of angels with traditional Irish tunes from the past?
My favorite has to be Londonderry Air (Danny Boy), and I especially love it when it's an instrumental. That's not to say it's any less beautiful when a proper Irish tenor knocks the socks off of it.
But an orchestral version has so many nuances in it. ALL the instruments working together in perfect unison and harmony...can't beat that.
Jimmy Galway does it RIGHT.
Then, you have the version sung by a chorale...another home run, musically-speaking.
Also, when one stops to think of ALL the contributions that Irish immigrants made to OUR nation when they came here, well, that speaks volumes in and of itself.
So let's all raise a glass in honor of all those of Irish descent who endured hardships to come here, dealt with discrimination, worked hard and thrived as a people (rather than many who were born here and want everything for nothing).
It was almost nothing that many of the Irish brought with them to America, and yet, they persevered and overcame the obstacles in their path.
And, as I like to do each St. Patrick's Day, I'll leave you with one of many prayers of the Irish:
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

Submarine Day? I should probably watch THE HUNT OF RED OCTOBER and have a sub for dinner. Instead, I'll probably just watch JUSTIFIED and eat whatever my wife thinks up. ;)

John:
There are plenty of submarine flicks out there. Haven't found a bad one yet.
Lots of time to catch up on those.

And a wife's cooking is nothing to sneeze at, either.

I'll ALSO be doing the JUSTIFIED gig tonight...love the way this season is playing out.

Thanks for stopping by today and commenting.

Roll safe out there.

All day long, people mentioned St Paddy's, and I even wore green. And when I filled out my time card, I hadda look at the computer for the date. An oriental co-worker asked and everyone (but me) shouted "the 17th", and I just smiled and thought, "Can't even throw stones on that one..."

Chris:
LOL...leave it to you to remind yourself the date.
I don't go hog-wild on it...never did (Mom used to say we're "orangemen"...look THAT one up...heh).
I will confess that I always had an appreciation for someone who was sold into slavery at 10 years old, managed to get out of it and became THE patron saint who brought Christianity to the pagan Irish.
Gotta love that kinda ending, hmm?

Thanks for stopping by today to comment.

Stay safe up there,. brother.
