Friday Follies...
Sunshine and clear skies...NOT in the offing today, kids. Sorry about that.
Looks like we, hear in the Heartland are in for some soaking rain over the next day or two.
We're waking up to thunderstorms (and red skies), so you know what that means (red skies in morning, sailor take warning).
Luckily, we're not at sea, but it might feel close to that.
Our Hoosierland weather for today brings us overcast conditions, rain throughout the day (with thunder and lightning) with strong winds. Temps will rise to around 84 degrees.
Can't really add to that. Looks like a very "soft" day (as they say in the UK), so take care driving and bring that umbrella along...you WILL need it.
Now, let's pour ourselves a cup, glass or mug of some Friday Fortitude, as we see what else has (and will be) going on...
*** First out of the deluge is our "What the hell happens today, Bob?" feature:
JULY 20 -
---It's National Lollipop Day
(something to be said for an "all day sucker"...lol)
---It's National Moon Day
(commemorating OUR first landing on the moon back in 1969)
---It's National Pennsylvania Day
(the commonwealth of my birth...might have to raise a glass on this one)
*** Next up, and since we are at week's end, let's see what we can observe over the following 48 hours...
JULY 21 -
---Saturday is National Be Someone Day
(what's the matter with the someone we already are?)
---It's National Junk Food Day
(that's any day around our home)
---It's National Strawberry Rhubarb Wine Day
(not into rhubarb...at all. Pass the scotch)
---It's Toss Away the "could haves" and "Should Haves" Day
(sorry, but regrets are a part of life...work through them)
JULY 22 -
---Sunday is National Hammock Day
(talk about a swinging time there)
---It's National Parent's Day
(This will be confusing as all hell on the SE side of Ft. Wayne)
---It's National Penuche Fudge Day
(hey, it's FUDGE. What's there not to like?)
---It's National Rat Catcher's Day
(not a job for the easily-frightened)
And there we go then...plenty of things to keep one out of trouble. Always be sure to observe responsibly.
*** Next, yes friends, ANOTHER shooting on the (where else?) SOUTHEAST side of our city.
Here's what's known:
http://www.wpta21.com/story/38690442/shooting-leaves-man-in-critical-condition
The shooting happened shortly after 1700 hrs in the 4000 block of Hoagland Avenue.  A male victim iwas taken to hospital in serious condition, but was later downgraded to critical condition. No suspects and (as usual) it's all inver investigation.
*** Next up, FWCS says no to metal detectors...for now. Here's the story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/news/local/schools/20180719/fwcs-wont-apply-for-metal-detectors-in-first-round
Funny, EACS is asking for about 38 of the devices (to ensure safety for IT'S students).
Wonder why FWCS is dragging it's heels? Could there be some sort of "racial component" behind this?
I mean, we wouldn't want to "single out" those who would be more likely to carry a weapon onto school grounds, JUST because they're black...right?
As the largest school system in the state, one would think they'd be at the forefront of protection of it's student body.
Well, maybe FWCS will get another chance to make good on this. Remember, he who hesitates is lost.
*** Next, the airman who was the inspiration for the move "Good Morning Vietnam" has passed away.
http://www.journalgazette.net/entertainment/celebrities/20180719/airman-who-inspired-good-morning-vietnam-has-died
Adrian Cronauer, who was (loosely) portrayed by Robin Williams in the move was 79 years old.
And he does have a WIKI:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Cronauer
((Cronauer was a member of Mensa and a "lifelong card-carrying Republican".))
Not bad for another Pennsy guy, even if he was from Pittsburgh.
*** Next up, it was refreshing to see some "fan favorite" episodes of Doctor Who on BBC America yesterday.
"Wha?...ooh...lovely..."
And, it's also good to hear some of the fantastic writing that went into those episodes.
"Tell them I took the LONG way around."
The Day of the Doctor and Heaven Sent are two personal favorites of mine.
They even included a LOST episode - SHADA (from the Tom Baker years), and it was good to finally see it in as complete a condition as they could manage.
The 5th Doctor - Tom Baker
The ending alone was great. A very pleasant diversion indeed.
*** Next, time to stop by our "Kitten Corner"...
Our kids did pretty good yesterday...although there wasn't that much to watch outside.
And the chasing about was kept to a minimum.
Violet has her "following daddy around" routine down to a science...lol.
From mid-morning to early afternoon , she cannot let me out of her sight. Gallifrey just comes and goes as HE pleases...when it's time to rub his neck, he WILL let you know.
He's the demonstrative one of the duo. She's the little lady.
*** Next up, let's check back in with "Midnight and Whiskers"...
Now don't go wandering off again...
Our furry twosome had a mixed bag. Whiskers was around ALL day (didn't have to call her for eats), while Midnight was MIA after breakfast until close to dinner time.
Where DOES he go anyway?
Where he managed to go and what he did will remain a mystery.
But they were both here for treats-time.
Treats-Time is coming.
All I have to do is crinkle the bag, and they are right in front of me, waiting.
And they will both sit up for the treats. A good finish to a decent day.
*** Last back to the soaked sidewalks...this time of year comes with a veritable cornucopia of insects.
The up side is seeing a  praying mantis and of course, the butterflies. Yesterday, we had a monarch fluttering about.
Destructive sum bitches
The down side are those Japanese beetles and cicadas.
The former are just plain destructive, while the latter are just plain noisy.
Ugly little loudass.
The cicadas are like having the ghetto-dwellers of the insect world around...
Like their human counterparts, they are loud all the time.
I am thankful the bugs don't own stereo systems (or get public-assistance).
With the bugs, it's ONLY a seasonal thing...there's the difference.
Perhaps the reason we have to put up with such people, is to show us how NOT to behave.
As we live (and teach) by example...SO...DO...THEY.
And you can rest assured that the bothersome among us are not following any "path to glory".
Does that make us SUPERIOR?
No, it just makes us less prone to follow evil and the devices it employs to take OUR eyes off of what we need to focus on.
That's not to say we should ever stop trying to BECOME better individuals...that's a daily task and requires perseverance and persistence. This is something completely foreign to some people.
No one can ever be perfect, but it sure can be easy enough to become a good person...that's the key.
Do have yourselves a good weekend.
Be well, make a difference to someone today, and as always...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

I know Rhubarb was one of the many flavors of wine Dad used to make... not a popular one, though. It usually was about the clover here.

Parents day: one of those few you can have all whites on the picture and nobody complains, lol...

You know damn well that's why FWCS is dragging their feet. Wendy won't be the "well respected administrator" she is if she pokes the golden- er, chocolate- goose.

Cicadas (or as we called 'em, locusts) are a wonderful, relaxing sound to those of us who grew up with them- at any volume they can manage.

Chris:
---That CLOVER sounds intriguing.
---Yeah, ain't that the truth.
---Oh, I think she IS a sly one, and while she might actually be very good at SOME aspects of her position, you cannot dismiss the "politics"...(which used to be it's OWN separate classroom course in my day).
---If they're not right OVER us, it's not bad (although I do prefer crickets MUCH more).
Had one on the front step once...it scared the crap outta me when it sounded off.
ANY bug that can "shout" near as loud as me I avoid...lol.

Hey, thanks much for carrying the blog (again) this week.

Have yourselves a very good weekend and stay safe up there, brother.

Hope you had a good weekend, Bob G. Your cats are enjoying the summer fun I see. Love your last saying.

Well, we had a WET weekend...not really hard rain, just CONSTANT.
Keep the noisy idiots at bay for a bit.

Yeah, as long as there is a tomorrow, there is ALWAYS a chance to become a better person.
That's what I believe and try to strive for.

Thanks for rolling up to comment.

Stay safe down there, dear.
