Wither or Whether it's Weather...
Does this picture look vaguely familiar?
Look outside and then tell me.
If we thought the snow was nice, how much more are we enjoying the recent FREEZING RAIN? I for one can honestly say I detest it more than should be humanly allowed.
I've driven in weather such as this...all too often, and I can say that it NO walk in the park (or drive in the park for that matter). This is the kind of white-knuckle, get close to God through prayer kind of driving conditions.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that SPEED will NOT be a factor, unless you really WANT that bedside manner at Parkview to be your holiday fare. I'd take snow over this crap ANY day. At least I can usually get some TRACTION in snow, but with ICE...well, that just isn't going to happen all that much. And since they don't make STUDDED TIRES any longer, driving on this becomes a lesson in patience, perseverance, and controlling one's sebaceous glands.
I saw kids fall flat on their asses yesterday (I guess those fancy "athletic shoes" are to blame, so we can SUE the maker, right?), but since their pants were saggin', that made it all the more funnier. Reminds me of what a SPEC-ED PENGUIN (with a hoodie) must look like.
(hint: if you don't know HOW to dress for bad weather, maybe you shouldn't be outside in the first place...DUH!)
Personally, I think the schools should have closed altogether, simply due to all those buses trying to keep from slip-sliding down the streets, picking kids up. Hell, even most all of the BOOMCARS aren't even thumping down my street, so you KNOW driving is bad when even THEY don't venture outside. Then again, since none of these morons work (or are productive to society in ANY other fashion), they have plenty of time to wait until the weather breaks, unlike the rest of us.
With more of this stuff headed our way in the next 72 hours, it wouldn't surprise me if the schools closed tomorrow, or even Wednesday, because you just KNOW that "if" a school bus has ANY accident where kids are the least bit injured, some parent will inevitably sue the school system for NOT closing the school. And these would be the SAME parents that piss and moan when kids have to make up SNOW DAYS at year's end which screws up the families "etched in stone" vacation plans made years in advance. So, that's a no-win scenario.
If you really got to go outside today and drive anywhere, you "ain't goin' to no fire", so TAKE YOUR FREAKIN' TIME. And if you've EVER wondered what the little letter *L* or number *1* on the shifter is, today would be the perfect day to find out. It's called L-O-W gear, and will keep you from getting ahead of yourself on a slippery street. When in LOW gear, it's pretty damn hard to drive faster than say 20 MPH, and the engine will let you KNOW it. And anyone wanting to go faster than 20 MPH on THESE streets must be trying to evade the police. It's a good rule of thumb (to go a lot slower), and keeps problems to a minimum. And let's be fair, body shops are doing the Pavlovian thing when they see weather like this - they're smiling all the way to their banks...with YOUR money, should an accident befall you.
But let's hope that isn't the case today...or the rest of the week (according to weather reports).
Yes, (everyone sing along...) "Oh, the weather outside IS frightful"... So to all those living in some, nice, warm, snow and ice-free area of the nation, and don't have to fret themselves over weather like ours....BUGGER OFF...LOL!
