Humpday Happenings...
Take TWO folks, because a 'puter glitch wiped out the FIRST attempt to write my post...
Some days, technology doesn't want to play well with others...lol.
Today is such a day.
((...rolls eyes...))
So, rather than expound on the Hoosierland weather, which will be a close "ditto" of yesterday with the exception of some cloudy skies with mid-80s temps and a bit of humidity, let's plow right into the good stuff...while we can, fair enough?
*** First off is today's motto of the week aka WHO SAID THAT?
"If work is a good thing, the rich would have it all and not let you do it."
Now, if you pay attention to this post, you'll find the clue as to who said this.
Moving on...
*** Time again for all the events you don't seem to hear about, otherwise known as:
Bobby G's This Day in AUGUST History!
August 21 -
1770 - Explorer James Cook formally claims eastern Australia for Great Britain, naming it New South Wales.
1831 - Nat Turner leads black slaves and free blacks in a rebellion.
1883 - An F5 tornado strikes Rochester, Minnesota, leading to the creation of the MAYO CLINIC.
1959 - President Eisenhower proclaims through an executive order that HAWAII is to become America's 50th state.
1969 - James Anderson, Jr becomes the first black U.S. marine to receive the Medal of Honor (posthumously)
1992 - The Ruby Ridge standoff occurs in Idaho.
Notable birthdays -
1935 - Wilt Chamberlain (d-1999)
1938 - Kenny Rogers
1954 - Archie Griffin
1967 - Carrie-Anne Moss (yowzah!)
And now you know...some more of what you didn't a few minutes ago.
Moving on...
*** I'm thinking of starting a new "feature" here at the ERUDITION and I might call it "Our Daily Shooting", because it seems we're pretty much already THERE these days.
Yes, friends...ANOTHER shooting on Fort Wayne's...(...all together, kids)...SOUTHEAST SIDE!
Here's the story so far:
http://www.wane.com/news/crime/shooting-and-pursuit-may-be-linked
Okay, long story short - Man shows up on a doorstep - 1400 block Colerick St around 2300 hrs, bleeding from the shoulder.
He's taken to hospital with a gunshot wound in fair condition.
Witness tell police about a grey or silver pickup leaving the area, so a BOLO goes out.
Short time later, police are involved in a pursuit of a vehicle matching the description.
The pickup crashes into a tree at Schiele and Holly Aves, where two men bail and run into a nearby wooded area.
K-9 units are dispatched and soon, the two are in custody.
Police found TWO handguns in the vehicle, ONE of which is reported as STOLEN.
Brandon Carter, 24 and Marcus Timmons, 22, both (punks) of fort Wayne are in custody with a nice list of charges against them such as a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, but at this time, none of the charges are related to the initial shooting...only the pursuit and evasion from police.
BOTH of these BLACK MALES have nice rap sheets, especially now. Timmons loves to carry firearms, even onto school grounds, and he likes to drive slow enough to impede traffic. Carter is the speeder of the duo with numerous violations for just that..
If police can place them as the shooters on Colerick, that would be even better.
Get these two thugs OFF of our streets...period.
*** Fort Wayne makes another dubious list, and here's that story:
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20130821/LOCAL/308219980
We (here) have the HIGHEST price spikes when it comes to fuel prices...astounding, isn't it?
The highest SINGLE-DAY price jump in the entire NATION...that's Fort Wayne.
Other cities in the Midwest also make the list, and that's disturbing to some degree.
You might as well toss darts at a board to determine the cost on a daily basis...or maybe an Ouija board?
Indy and Dayton are right up there with US, while California sees maybe a 9 cent rise...but then again, they're already paying about a buck MORE per gallon. I'd love to know WHO figures this out...and WHY?
What has the Midwest done to deserve this? I have nio frigging clue.
We DO enjoy lower "low prices", however, and no one seems to gripe about THAT...do they?
I know I surely don't.
*** Noted crime novelist Elmore Leonard has passed away, and although the name probably doesn't ring ANY bells for most of us, you probably have seen some of his work on the big and small screen.
Here's his WIKI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmore_Leonard
I know I have enjoyed the character he created in the series JUSTIFIED immensely, but I also loved the original version of the movie 3:10 To Yuma (Glenn Ford), as well as Hombre (Paul Newman) and Mr. Majestyk (Charles Bronson). He also wrote Get Shorty (John Travolta) and 52 Pickup (Roy Scheider).
The marvelous characters he created will live long after him, that's for sure.
And that's not too bad a legacy to leave behind.
*** Lastly today, more shootings, more violence, more ANGST overall out there, and when do any of us catch a break?
It seems we rarely do anymore, and we really should.
We're too busy with American Idol, or some other TV tripe meant to cajole us into a false sense of security, while the world seems to burn outside our doors. We think we're safe, and all the while, we're less safe than we used to be a mere 30 years ago.
We need to remain vigilant, aware, and attuned to what's going on around us, rather than while away our time with some form of electronic nonsense.
We should remain steadfast in our determination to better ourselves and our lives for us and for those who will follow.
And we can't do that by wasting time or resources...life is too damn short for that.
Try your best every day, and if failure comes along, dust it off your shoes and start over.
Remember, success is how YOU measure it, and not by what others say or believe.
Be well, make a difference to someone, and...
Stay SAFE out there, America.

Great historical dates! I had no idea Wilt Chamberlain was that old. Time flies. I am still secretly hoping for the day you do not have police drama in your city or neighborhood that is so dynamic and newsworthy. yikes. Have a great day!

I still can't believe that Wilt is GONE.
We practically grew up w/ him back in Philly...when basketball had REAL stars...with NO "tatts" covering their bodies.

Yeah, this part of town COULD use a break from all the "fun & games" we seem to have almost HOURLY.

Ya know, if it wasn't for OUR part of the city, we'd barely have ANY CRIME to report...AT ALL.

I like to think we're doing OUR part, so the newscasts aren't a mere 10 minutes long and the newspapers aren't more like pamphlets.
Otherwise, the media would have to scour the surrounding COUNTIES (for all those "one-pots")...LOL.

Hey, thanks for rolling up today and commenting.

You stay safe down there.

I did see Leonard's passing on the news... because I read BBC.

I was also curious whether these two fine young men would be fingered for both of the week's shootings.

Should do like the ancient Greeks woulda done- put 'em in a solitary cell, give 'em a pair of guns, and see how long you have to wait for them to do the "right thing".

Chamberlain and Moss.... are you trying to be balanced?

Two MORE thugs off the street!
(for a week?)

Now YOUR idea is great.

I DO like that "Greecian Formula"...LOL.
(and no hint of "gray")

Balanced with Wilt and Carrie?
Perhaps...
Wilt the Stilt was HUGE draw back in Philly, but that was a time when we had MUCH better race relations.
As for Carrie?
I miss seeing her on VEGAS, but she was a knock out in the MATRIX series (first two flicks only)

If that's balanced...okay, I'm guilty...!

Thanks for dropping by to comment today.

Stay safe up there.
