Friday Follies...
As we bask in this marvelous rainy weather (did I just say that?), let's have a look at what else has been going on.
--While watching last night's acceptance speech of John McCain as the GOP nominee for President, I have to admit that hearing him speak was like the old days of "stump-thumping" campaigns.
If it was meant to motivate, then by God, many Americans will say: "Mission Accomplished".
The speech was evocative of the newsreels of Teddy Roosevelt (imho), and I feel was channeled towards sheer patriotism. And there's nothing wrong with that, is there? McCain did an admirable job of delivering a speech that gave me a renewed sense of pride in our nation.
Now I know that this is what the speech was designed to do, but aside from that, it showed me that ordinary people can still be challenged by extraordinary circumstances, and come out a better person on the other side.
It's people that can make a difference, often by one lone person at a time.
But I've believed that for YEARS.
Still, it was good to hear someone ELSE know that this is the way things get done, and the way change for the better can be achieved for all people in America.
John's rhetoric was far from empty, and I look forward to this election more than many from the past.
One thing is certain, it WILL be nothing, if not interesting.
In other news...
The FWPD have been VERY busy these past 48 hours.
-- A little after 0353 hrs this morning, Police were (once again) called to the B.P. station at S. Anthony Blvd and McKinnie St. for a TRIPLE SHOOTING. Two men were found with gunshot wounds about a block away, in the 4100 block of Lillie Street. They were transported to a local hospital in good condition.
A third man called police to say he had been shot and was being transported to a hospital. He was later listed in serious condition.
Investigators believe the men were in the gas station parking lot when shots were fired from the YA BOY chicken joint parking lot across the street.
The names of the victims are being withheld, pending family notification.
No suspects were arrested yet, and the investigation scene is still fresh (lots of yellow tape). More black on black crime on the SOUTH side of town aka "bid'ness as usual".
And WTF are these people doing hanging out at 4AM anyway???
Funny thing, this intersection has been a "hot spot" over the past several months, and there have been a plethora of traffic stops all along Rudisill and McKinnie Sts in an apparent effort to stem the tide of crime.
You're going to need a LOT more "buckets" to stem THIS "tide", people.
--Around 1751 hrs on Thursday, police were called to 2715 Stardale Drive (where else but on the SOUTH side) to help EMS with a possible battery vic. The woman was breathing, but not conscious. She was not wearing any clothes, but had bruises on her body.
The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition, as detectives and crime-scene officers tracked back to the TWIN OAKS apartments where she lived (you remember THIS place...another hot spot of crime). The woman is in her 40s and is suffering from brain and stomach cancer, and had been in remission before recently recurring.
Investigators currently have no suspects.
--Around 1100 hrs, the ACSD was serving an arrest warrant on Christopher Washington at a home in the 4900 block of Gaywood St. (on...you guessed it, the SOUTH side).
He already had TWO outstanding warrants (and that's the GOOD kind of outstanding) for failure to appear in court for invasion of privacy charges along with a warrant for body attachment (owing $1,300 to family court).
Wait for it...it gets better.
The good part comes when he took off running from the house, where he attempted to book across Pettit Avenue.
A REAL bad idea.
Seemed he was struck by a passing female motorist in her Cadillac (a certain level of irony comes to mind here). You see, hardly ANYONE works around here, so they have ALL day to drive the hell around, ergo, more chances to get hit while crossing a street. That's when they're not WALKING down the MIDDLE of that street themselves (where I can hit THEM).
Talk about being at the right place at the right time.
Washington was taken to hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to serious condition (and is probably still cuffed to the bed as well).
Guess those expensive athletic shoes didn't help all that much. Besides, didn't "yo mama" ever teach to LOOK BOTH WAYS before crossing a street, Chris?
--Fort Wayne officials condemned a SOUTH-side car wash after police raided the business, saying it had ties to gangs and drugs (nice job).
Millennium Carwash, located at 517 E. Oxford St. was being used for dealing drugs, and that weapons were being stashed there, according to narcotics detectives' evidence. Police also said that this location is a KNOWN hangout for gang members. The EST (SWAT) served a warrant around 1935 hrs Wednesday at the business, and found 7 adults, one "juvey", a handgun, a small amount of marijuana, and packaging materials for SELLING marijuana.
NCE (Neighborhood Code Enforcement) condemned the building, and three were arrested on misdemeanor charges. A fourth person was arrested for an outstanding warrant from Allen County Superior Court's Family Relations Division.
The business owner, a Mr. Derek L. Taylor, was arrested during a traffic stop, according to police. Taylor, 32, of the 3200 block of Central Drive is looking at an initial felony charge of marijuana possession (wonder if he's the guy with the white 2000 Taurus- IN plate EC2064- that carries that plastic-wrapped "bundle" under the hood of his car?)..bad boy.
--A Fort Wayne man, Brian Moore, Jr., 19, of the 2900 block of Hoagland Avenue (again...on the SOUTH side) was accused of cashing or trying to cash 11 YMCA payroll checks in August, and faces 20 criminal charges.
The YMCA checks were forged, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Moore is currently a "guest" of the Allen County lockup and being held without bail. He also faces charges of burglary and several receiving stolen property charges.
Again...WELL DONE...everyone! Nice to see some good, solid police work!
Damn shame we have so MUCH crime in my part of town, though. That needs to change...and soon.
Still, more could be done, and it could have been done with more willingness of the FWPD to develop MORE citizen "eyes and ears" out there. We're too few in number, and tend to be summarily blown off sometimes, and that alone can be more frustrating than the crime permeating our streets down here. It's little wonder that good neighborhoods have become bad over time, when many good neighbors and citizens up and leave, due to flourishing criminal activity.
We could reverse this trend, but it won't happen overnight. Crime already has it's foot in the door, so to speak. Our job, as the citizens of this city, along with persistent police presence and diligence, is to make sure that this unwanted visitor not only gets his foot OUT of that door, but is made to understand that he's no longer welcome in this area.
Then, and ONLY then, will these once nice neighborhoods be able to be reclaimed for the decent people of this city...NOT before.
And with that thought, I wish all of you a SAFE Weekend.

We Finally Had Rain...
What the hell was that liquid falling from the sky last evening?
Could it really be...RAIN?
My God, it WAS rain...and a fairly decent amount. Out by Getz Rd. and Jefferson Blvd., they had FLOODING (must be all that construction).
Honest to goodness FLOODING...and it was only a little rain, not some deluge worthy of the Gulf Coast. Methinks there still needs to be some "tweaking" done with the whole "flood plain" problems in this city.
Aside from that, I spent some of last night in front of the TV (watching...ugh...politics).
***Most of you know I'm not really into politics (and have gone on record here many times saying as much), but when I watched the GOP Convention last night, I didn't have that (usual) sense that the first syllable of the word CONVENTION was being perpetrated on me. Former NYC mayor, Rudy Giuliani had a damn fine speech (read routine), and I caught myself laughing more than a few times.
Nice job, Rudy.
I'm very cynical when it comes to politicians (with very few exceptions), and am wary as all get out whenever I hear someone from ANY political party say that "they" will make "my" life better (I'm still waiting on that one). I tend to gravitate towards the "Jerry McGuire" philosophy vis-a-vis "Show Me the Money". I want them to provide some substance behind the words I'm hearing from them. And I don't think that's too much to ask. A little integrity...a little ethical behavior...a little honesty.
These are traits that I believe EVERY person possesses. Whether they choose to USE them is quite the other matter.
Well, I wanted to watch the VP candidate, Sarah Palin take the podium and convince me.
I have to say, I wasn't disappointed.
It's been quite some time since I have heard ANY political candidate talk with such purpose. It was refreshing to see a former "soccer mom" talk to the American people as ONE OF THEM. None of this elitist crap, this disconnect with the common man or woman, just plain old straight talk, shooting from the hip, as it were.
Now, like any candidate, there are many promises made, and probably just as many broken after the fact, but if someone is never given a chance to at least attempt to fulfill those promises, how can we say, with good conscience, that this candidate, or ANY candidate for that matter was provided the "fair shake" on those promises?
Is John McCain the "best" candidate for president? Given that he doesn't seem to pander to the "status quo" in the Washington circle is a plus, but it's also a hard row to hoe. What works FOR him could also work against him, considering the grand scheme of things, as well as the way Washington tends to "play".
Is Sarah Palin the best choice for VP?
As far as actual "executive" experience, I'd have to say yes. It appears that she stands her ground and doesn't back off when someone whose reproductive organs are externally located (like Big Oil) decides to challenge her, and I admire that. She runs one of a few states in the union that currently has a budget SURPLUS, and with ALL that territory and less than a million citizens, that simply cannot be an easy task.
She appears to be a good wife, a good parent, and a good American, and would compliment McCain to no small end. And, as I stated on other blogs, she's not all that bad on these old eyes.
I believe it's a good blend for this nation.
***Next, as I blogged yesterday, the FWPD is cracking down on these scooters being driven illegally around town. Chief Rusty York went on TV to explain how the problem will be addressed in a 3-part program.
--Part One will be EDUCATION (good luck with that, Rus). People will be instructed on what TYPE of scooter/moped they own, and where to find the information (anyone check the manual that came WITH the damn thing?) in the event they are stopped.
--Part Two will be a "stop and tow" consisting of people being pulled over and if the proper paperwork is lacking (license & registration for scooters over 50cc and can go over 25 MPH), then the bike will be taken to impound. Also, pertinent helmet issues will be addressed for teens driving or riding on them. No citation will be issued and the bike will be returned after proper paperwork is provided. I'll wager the impound will CHARGE a storage fee (count on that).
--Part three will be the "stop, tow, and cite". This will most likely occur after a second stop, or after a reasonable time has passed for the "education" aspect (that would be when everyone has had a chance to LEARN what type of bike they actually have). This WILL cost you up to $150, depending on circumstances, and the vehicle will wind up in impound, with a daily charge assessed.
I do hope that some provision is made for all these "pocket bikes" that I've seen as well. They're just unsafe period, and belong under some clown in the sideshow tent. Same goes for go-karts, home-built minibikes, and the like.
I think it's a good idea, and hopefully, we won't see issues arise based on false accusations when this is implemented. It makes the streets safer for everyone.
After all, the last thing anyone needs is to have to scrape some dumb-ass scooter and driver from the underside of their vehicle because that idiot was playing chicken with fate as well as some 3800 lb. SUV when he decided to cut in front of it and lost the game of PHYSICS big time.
Some things we're just not meant to do in life.
That would be one of them
Don't forget - trash pickup is ONE DAY LATE, due to the Monday holiday.
So STICK OUT YOUR CAN on the RIGHT day, kapesh?

Humpday Happenings...
Seems we were just here, doesn't it?
No worries though...on to the commentary.
--My wife tells me that she heard on the radio that the FWPD are looking for a few good scooters....and not in the manner you think.
The police are conducting "checkpoints" determining if the scooters on the streets are LEGAL. So that means if the engine on your "pocket rocket" is OVER 50cc, then you'd BEST have a license for it. AND, you better have all the other paperwork needed, should you be stopped.
Sure these nifty little scooters are very fuel efficient, and will get you from A to B with dispatch, but I fell that ANY motorized vehicle capable of negotiating traffic with the "big dogs" needs to be licensed and insured, no matter what size engine it has.
I was on a ride-along a few years back with the FWPD, and we answered a call to a house that had someone tooling about the streets on the east side in a go-kart! We're talking residential streets mind you, and not some country road. If this guy were to pass me in my Firebird, I'd never see him...period.
That's too damn low to the ground.
As to all these scooters, I can say that I've seen my share of bad "scootering".
Darting in and out of traffic is a major problem.
Many times you have kids on these flying up or down the streets. Few have helmets adorning their precious little craniums. And the last time I checked, the laws of physics were working just fine, thank you. That means if a scooter "encounters" a larger vehicle (a distinct possibility, given the amount of traffic), the scooter will very likely come out on the short end of the stick, as will it's driver.
BTW, the BLUE scooter is 50cc - and WOULD need to have a license on it. The YELLOW one is 45cc, and would NOT have to be licensed. Not too much of a difference, is there?
License them all, hold them to the same level of accountability we hold EVERY other driver of every other motor vehicle to, be it four wheeled or two.
--Noted country singer/actor Jerry Reed passed away Monday.
The Bandit's partner in those Burt Reynolds movies has driven his last mile.
I grew up hearing so many of his songs on the radio both on the country station as well as mainstream pop stations.
I'm going to miss him, as I'm sure many of us will.
Here's the WIKI link for his bio:

--I surfed into the GOP Convention last night, and saw none other than Joe Lieberman on there.
My initial reaction was WTF?
Why is HE there?
I became intrigued enough to stay a bit.
I have to admit it WAS refreshing to see a former Democrat endorse McCain, and call for unity across the NATION.
And I did like the slogan: COUNTRY FIRST.
Speaks volumes to me.
I always thought Joe was like Dirty Harry, and got the crap end of things, and I would have liked to see him go a little farther in his bid for the presidency, but maybe this nation isn't ready for a Jewish president.
I remember the angst over the first ROMAN CATHOLIC president (that would be Kennedy).
I also found out what David Caruso will look like in say....30 years...LOL!
CSI: Miami Retirement, anyone?
--Lastly, I heard on the radio today (WBNI - the FIRST, REAL, HONEST TO GOODNESS oldies station in Fort Wayne) a passing comment on a show viewed by the person on air.
He mentioned BBC America's TOP GEAR.
Well, that got MY attention, as this show has fast become one of my "must see" shows every week.
In case you missed my post the other month when I mentioned the FiOS install with the additional channels for our TV, I talked about Gordon Ramsay and Top Gear.
Top Gear is for the real enthusiasts in the motoring crowd. Sure it has lots of test drives in cars many of us can only DREAM about, but aside from that, the three hosts provide a lot of fun during the show's hour.
For example, which is faster...a man OR a car?
How about who can get from London to Oslo faster, a man in a car or 2 men taking the plane and ferry? And who can turn down a race/demolition derby between RVs?
Did you ever wonder how fast a delivery van can make it around a famed racetrack in Germany?
Or what kind of car can you get in England for £1500, and will it actually pass some endurance tests (like can it actually run 60 miles after doing a speed lap)?
After being a fan of MOTORWEEK for ages, I can truthfully say that TOP GEAR is much better. I mean I have never once laughed my ass off during Motorweek.
Top Gear is wonderfully entertaining, as well as educational, and just a tad irreverent. But the hosts bring a plethora of knowledge and credentials to the table. And we get to sit back and watch. They even have a forever-helmeted "tamed race driver" called The Stig!
Can't ask for better programming than THAT, can you?
Which begs the question: "What happened to all those DIY mechanic shows?" I miss having people advise me on what my car is doing, and how I can remedy the problem. I don't need a "unique whip" in my frigging garage, nor do I EVER wish to "pimp" MY ride (that's for those with obvious sexual performance issues).
I want those shows that demonstrate things that can go wrong in a car, and how to address them, or better yet...how to PREVENT them from occurring in the first place. let's face it, car's "ain't what they USED to be"...not with all the electronic crap on board. It's like a damn USAF fighter with all that crap inside it.
You have temperature sensors, mass air flow sensors, throttle position sensor, vehicle speed sensors, oxygen sensors, exhaust sensors, EGR valve sensors, spark advance sensors, vacuum advance sensors...cripes, ETHAN HUNT couldn't get past all THESE sensors! (*that's a "mission impossible" reference, btw), and neither can I.
We simply can't motor along without them (unless your car predates the mid 70s...lucky you).
Ah well...sometimes you DO just have to "Bow to the absurd".
And remember, when it comes to my neighborhood and my neighbors...
ABSURD is all "part of the show".
Seems we were just here, doesn't it?

The Presence of Presents...
I must say that at 56 years of age, I was taking stock of some (make that most) of things I managed to accumulate over the decades, and I'm sure many of you have done or are doing something similar.
You can't help but wonder HOW you got all this crap in the first place.
And you're wondering WHERE you can possibly stash all this ill-gotten gain.
If you're a collector, not a problem, as you've most likely set aside a portion of your abode to showcase such items. Either that, or you wound up buying a SECOND house (so you have a place to actually LIVE)...LOL!
As you get older, you DO wish that you had all those marvelous toys you tossed.
They would pay for your retirement, that's for sure.
And you wish you had those old comics and trading cards...for the same reason.
But you don't, so no crying over spilled milk there.
Now it's a game of trying to get something you don't have...but might want.
I know that every gift-giving holiday, birthday, or anniversary becomes a study in angst.
I also know that I'm easily pleased when it comes to getting a gift, and for one VERY important reason:
I DIDN'T have to PAY for it. It was FREE (after a fashion).
In some instances, the present is practical, like when the kids chip together and get dad that hunting vest he wanted, or those lures he had his eye on the last time they went to that fishing store. It might be a set of "club covers" that the missus got hubby because he loves golfing.
And if there is one thing I come away with when getting a gift or present, it's that someone spent a few bucks and a few minutes to get something for me. It might not be exactly what I had in mind, but the giver's intentions mean well. And I do my best to take care of that item.
It's like the rechargeable shaver my wife got me a few Christmases ago. I clean it after EVERY shave, and make sure to keep it charged for optimum performance. When it comes to all those SOCKS you get, things tend to change. You can't keep socks forever, as they are MEANT to be worn...and worn out. And in many cases, who the hell wants to keep age-old socks, aside from some weird-ass "foot fetisher" anyway?
Cripes, I recall having a pair of GYM SOCKS in high school in that tiny locker which would (by semester's end) literally stand up on their own, and come running when I whistled...they were THAT bad. Those you DID NOT want to keep, trust me. They were essentially disposable.
Other things...not so much.
Still, I do wish I had a lot of those things that I have gotten rid of all those years ago.
As it is, I've got enough space in our house (and garage) taken up with "stuff" from the past. Whether it's collectibles, comics, or whatever toys have come along for the ride, I've kept careful watch to preserve them.
And yes, I realize they might NEVER wind up in some lost corner of the Smithsonian on display, but as all of you know, what we have accumulated over the years helps to DEFINE us. We are the sum of our parts, as it were.
This is just another one OF those "parts".
We are what we accumulate, apparently.
That explains the phrase "white trash" to a tee in some cases, right? Take one look at them, and then take a look at their immediate surroundings and the manner in which they live. There IS a correlation.
One aspect I find amusing is when the family is trying to decide on what to get "Old Uncle Ralph". You always here someone say: "He's so hard to buy for....he has damn near everything".
Well, if he had (damn near) EVERYTHING, Uncle Ralph would be one rich-ass SOB, wouldn't he? He;d be buying US crap, instead of the other way around now, wouldn't he?
No one has everything...not even the heads of state in DUBAI (but they do have a lot more stuff than we could ever imagine). Just get Uncle Ralph those slippers...he'll like those, trust me.
I'm pretty easy to buy for, like I say. I'll accept damn near anything that's given with an ounce of sincerity. That's just the way I was brought up. Thankfully, those that have graced me with their "presents" (pun intended) have "chosen wisely" (just thought of that old Templar knight from the 3rd Indiana Jones movie), and have been tactful with their selections. Never been disappointed yet...even after 56 years.
This year, back in January, I found a (new) RAM P99 1:1 scale .43 caliber paintball pistol online for a HELLUVA LOT LESS than the retail price, and my wife graciously allowed me to get it, saying it was my present up to and including my birthday. Well, it was $170 (and change) total. Plus, I got an extra clip, the ammo and the CO2 cylinders for it.
Kind of pricey, and yet a ton of fun.
And I had no problem with not getting much else during that time.
If I thought otherwise, I took the pistol out of it's case, loaded it up, and took down some green army men in my basement shooting "range".
Yesterday, I got that B&D electric hedge trimmer, and while it's "for the house", I take it as another "man-toy". Hey, when you snag something like that at about a 50% cost reduction...what else can you say?
(I tend to get a tad "possessive" when it comes to power tools....it's the Tim Taylor in me)
But now, all bets are off. We're back to square one...and Christmas is but a few brief months away. And I will have to start wondering what I want for Christmas. My wife will be asking for "my list".
Practicality will most likely hold court, as my holiday "wish list" can EASILY be filled with such impossibilities as:
*Better neighbors
*Respectful neighbors
*Respectful children
*No more rentals on my street
*No more drug deals on my street
*World Peace
*Global Climate Stabilization
*Fusion power for my car
*Lower taxes
*Better City Services
...Yeah, THOSE things.
Don't bother to wonder what I've been smoking....you've wanted a lot of these things too (and more)...admit it.
I'm gathering my thoughts, and (realistic) wishes.
So take some time when next you hear someone asking you what you want for your birthday...or anniversary...or Christmas...or whenever.
Make your PRESENTS known...LOL!
And be a bit more grateful that someone took some time to give a damn about you. That doesn't come along every day, and will eventually fade with time. Enjoy it while it lasts.
For the ladies out there...remember that a man will always have some difficulty when it comes to getting you something, unless you're into SPORTS, or partake in HIS outdoor activities.
For the guys out there...always remember...REAL MEN can NEVER have too many sweat socks!
Never.
Gonna be hot today...keep cool!
It's an "Air quality-action" day.
Makes me wonder why they never say we have an air quality-INACTION day?
Actually, it's more like a "Lot of bad ozone (as opposed to the GOOD ozone) that's hanging around ground level and can irritate the lungs of those who suffer from respiratory problems day". I guess that's TOO LONG to spout out on the news. But riding CITILINK buses is free today.

Labor day...For Better Or Worse...
Here in Indiana, it's nice and warm today, no clouds to speak of and a gorgeous day to grill something outside.
can't say as much about those along the Gulf Of Mexico though...can we?
Hurricane Gustav is hammering them today (3 years to the day hurricane Katrina struck the same area), and my prayers go out to those trying to avoid the storm, or even those wanting to "ride it out".
I will say that THIS time, FEMA isn't taking any chances.
Can't really blame them, can we?
And the mayor of New Orleans has even cleaned up HIS "act", urging people to get out of town.
Ray Nagin - once bitten, twice shy.
But it STILL IS labor Day...
And here's the skinny on today's "holiday" (via WIKI):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day
That should get everyone up to speed on what the MEANING of today is...
As for me?
I spent the early morning watching the news and Gustav's "track" as it makes landfall.
Then, it was off to Menards for sale stuff.
The wife got some HUGE honking scented candles in a glass jar for ONLY $1.90 each. And she got the birds some suet cakes.
I got...a bag of gravel...2 bags of mulch...and 1 bag of potting soil (yippee).
Oh, and I DID get a nice B&D electric "Hedge Hog" trimmer...was ONLY $20! Now those shrubs had better be-frigging -ware...I'm armed and dangerous now..ready to trim hedges and take names!
And we got that ALL done by 1000 hrs.
We did see three FWPD cars at the ATM along Tillman Road near Hanna. Apparently someone was mucking about with the machine, and they must have been guarding it. Only saw ONE other car nearby...an 80's model 4 dr blue Olds 98 (POS of course), and that "may" have been the perpmobile...don't know, but it was parked oddly. Didn't see anyone in custody, though.
So, it's just after 1200 hours, I've spread the mulch, spread the gravel, and am dying to use the trimmer, but it IS Labor Day...and I think after my brunch, I just might need a nap.
One other good thing...I got the missus of the hook regarding my birthday cake (that she neglected to get on the 22nd). We saw some patriotic cakes at Scotts...damn nice...and ONLY $1.79!!!
Now THAT'S a bargain, I don't care who you are.
I don't mind a red, white and blue "birthday" cake, even if it IS for Labor Day. Doesn't say 'happy labor day" on it anyways.
So it's for "Bob" instead.
Wonder how that will taste with a Sam Adams White Ale to chase it down?
Well..it IS labor day anyway.
And I've done MY labor for Queen (that's the missus) and country (this property).
Now it's time for...some "me" time.
Have a Safe Holiday, everyone.
Catch you on the flip side.
